Dark Forest Bio:
The philosophy behind Dark Forest has always been to play exciting, rousing, heartfelt heavy metal at its glorious best. Since formation in 2002 by guitarist Christian Horton and bassist Dave Batham, Dark Forest has constantly evolved and developed and continues to do so, combining a strong appreciation for the classical with the full blooded sound of a distinctly English brand of heavy metal. Dark Forest offers a technical yet fiercely passionate brand of music that defies categorization and all the stereotypes of the genre.
Based in the West Midlands, the spiritual home of heavy metal, Dark Forest embarked upon the live circuit and soon attracted the attention of gig organizers from Leeds to London. The band played regularly throughout the formative years up and down the country, and this early period also saw the band record two self-produced EP’s ‘Fear Dearg’ and ‘Phantoms of the Sea’. The EP’s evidently had potential as in 2008 with the backing of German label Eyes Like Snow, Dark Forest recorded their first full length, self entitled album. The release in January 2009 was met with resoundingly positive reviews, Terrorizer declared that the band’s technical innovation combined with their truly unique sound ‘will have a lot of the bigger labels kicking themselves wondering how this lot slipped under their radar!...Looking for where heavy metal should be in 2009? You’ve just found it!' (Terrorizer April 2009)
After the first album, the band continued to develop and grow both in the sophistication of the band’s sound as well as in stature, attracting regular bookings for UK shows. Will Lowry-Scott joined in May 2009, completing the band’s first ever five piece line up and ending a long search for the talented and talismanic front man the band had always envisaged. To let the world taste the strength of the new line up, Dark Forest released a three track EP, Defender, with German Label Iron Kodex on CD and Vinyl. A huge pre-order demand meant that vinyl copies were completely sold out before it was even released, and both the Debut Album and EP continue to enjoy healthy sales through a worldwide distribution network.
The release of Defender, which again was met with high praise, was quickly succeeded by a number of high-profile international gigs, notable among which was a slot at the Hammer of Doom Festival in Germany as well as a headline show at the Stronghold of Metal Festival in Portugal. Closer to home, Dark Forest have played a string of well attended gigs in London, and are beginning to enjoy ever increasing crowds thanks to the raw, formidable live experience they consistently deliver. Further bookings and frequent enquiries signal the momentum and reputation that Dark Forest are gaining in England’s capital.
Better, stronger, more passionate and driven than ever, Dark Forest recently entered the studio to record the prospective second album Riders to the Stars delivering for the first time something that the band feels to be a just manifestation of the vision that was there from the very beginning. Unsigned and looking for the backing of a label to move to the next level, Dark Forest will continue to evolve their uncompromising, raw and heartfelt sound and deliver it to the world!
