Alterbeast offer a blood stained altar of death metal beauty with Immortal. This very pro sounding album combines exciting trends of modern death and death or yesteryear for a death defying deadly experience. From opener “Flesh Bound Text” assaulting your ears through to closer (and extremely metal-titled) “Throne of Maggots”, this is your best stop right now for bludgeoning death with technical solos but not so much tech that you forget you are listening to death metal. These guys never tire of hammering out punishment of beastly magnitude. Check the 1:15 mark of “Throne Of Maggots” for an example of how precisely beastly things get!
The vocals have a great growl that doesn’t slip down into Pathology territory where it just sounds like belching and puking, rather staying just this side of digestible but very angry, akin to Corpsegrinder. Guitars, bass and drums work together to tighten the noose, especialy powerfully on the relentless “Vile Remnants” and the following track “Ancient’s Retribution”. The latter has the most technical passages on the album, at times sounding like a welcome cross between Cephalic Carnage and Cannibal Corpse in the nastiest way.”Mutilalted Marvel” is probably not about Deadpool’s shitty fan unfriendly appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but it still summons plenty of hostility from the speakers. I can imagine the 1:13 mark of this song crushing live as the band (a bit too) briefly slow to a crawling, classic 90’s oozing tempo. Love to see them tour with the killer Rose Funeral.
“Serpentspire” is 2:46 of evil, an atmospheric low chanted opening that is invaded by a liquid red bit of a bass run before Alterbeast bring back the full band brain glom for another number. The record is worth it alone for the great tones and slick lead runs frosting the death metal cupcake here. And the 2:00 riff of “Serpentspire” is a monster groove that sets up the best solo on the album. Just great death metal that deserves your attention and support.
