News broke this week that hard rockers Avenged Sevenfold, by far one of the biggest names in rock with appeal across a decent age spread, are skipping this year’s Grammy Awards. Turns out that yet again the awards show is shitting on rock, even though hard rock is one of the most populist art forms and deserves respect. Rock n roll is the foundation, baby. WTF! They think there is no correlation between shutting out a genre from a program that millions watch and an effect on album sales?
I’m sorry but a lot of people are sheeple and will get caught up in hype so even if you don’t think, say, August Burns Red is as metal as Mangled Goat Orifice or Borknagar or whoever you think should have gotten nominated in the rock song or metal categories, having a real hard rock or metalcore or thrash band nominated can be a huge gateway to sales for heavier genres.
A7X was nominated for their first Grammy this year, getting a nod in the “Best Rock Song” category for “The Stage.” They were less than stoked that the award would only be part of the pre show and not even televised and rightfully are telling the awards show to go fuck themselves. I think it is one of the coolest things the band has ever done with their platform and sends a good message to fans to stand up for what you value. Whether you like them or not it sends a message.
This is a band that has been direct support for fuckin’ Metallica. Legacy acts like Slayer and other big metal bands are retiring. Not everyone can pull of a Guns N Roses Not In This Lifetime Tour, y’know? If we don’t have the mainstream supporting at all, the underground will endure but it sure as hell isn’t easy for bands to last without a lot of luck to go with their pluck. Shit, The Grammys never even wanted to support Metallica THEMSELVES in the first place and the band has gone on to outsell tons of shitty acts in other genres who have only lasted a year or two at best. So show some god damn respect, Grammys. Or are you trying to make sure rock is dead?
Honored. Unfortunately they have taken "Best Rock Song" off the telecast this year so we won't be attending. Maybe next time. https://t.co/GIotEyLCuK

Other musicians also were dismayed that the emphasis on being as inclusive of rock alongside other genres is being diminished:
Rock and metal sell out theaters, arena’s,festivals and stadiums around the world .Why isn’t the “Best Rock Song” category being televised by the Grammy’s? #SupportAllMusic I THINK IT WOULD HELP KEEP A WELL BALANCED AWARD SHOW. —Thoughts?

This generation has no respect for real music, how to play an actual instrument, and the craftsmanship that goes into writing a song.
