I can’t overstate enough as a long time Hudson Valley resident in Upstate, NY how great Basilica Soundscape is. Many years ago in the early nineties my first band Melancholy and members of bands like 3, mearth., Pitchfork Militia, shabutie, Dripping Goss and other funk, punk or stoner noise loving kids had no place to play and literally willed a scene into existence in youth center shows and backyards before the bars had to recognize us. Nowadays you sort of have to just sit in one place and cool stuff comes to you around here, albeit through a lot of elbow grease and the smart booking of places like Hudson, NY’s Basilica and nearby Kingston, NY boutique venue BSP Kingston.

I just got done writing my weekly newspaper column for the Kingston Times this week about how cis, rapey frat boy types are lurching into Kingston more and more and taking over some of the bars. Any type of cerebral or edgy or intellectual nurturing of the region keeps us from backsliding, and Basilica Soundscape is far and away one of the coolest East Coast festivals. I almost don’t want to tell people about it so that it doesn’t get over saturated.

These days I’ll turn down many big festivals and rather see Behemoth and Myrkur in a small venue or go to Vitus in Brooklyn for a cool show like Upstart Fest or an Amon Amarth listening party or whatever is clever. Keep it intimate and more high on impact and experience over bodies pressed together like Governor’s Ball or whatever other festivals I’ll be avoiding seeing Kanye and LCD Bro-system at. Basilica resonates along my happy frequency lines with a great atmosphere of resonant performances and hyper curated acts in a killer setting.

I’m sure all you happy hipsters know and are stoked on Explosions In The Sky and WITTR already. I’m one of the few metal journos not completely bedazzled by Cobalt for various reasons, but I’m thrilled to see Deradoorian return to my area (she is killer live) as well as the droning power doom of Bell Witch, legend Genesis Breyer P-Orridge appearing and the very exciting and relentlessly gigging Youth Code bringing the industrial vibes.
