December Defiance: UN touring with CHRCH, Maggot Heart dates, Deadbird music video news items

Hey pals. My rescue cat Lil Puff is meowing her ass off for food even though she already had lunch (don’t worry, she doesn’t have worms). Nonetheless, I am going to try to concentrate long enough to type out some metal news for you today. First up, Happy Michael Flynn day! Secondly, before we start I want to share this thread from Twitter that has been thankfully well received about what I will and will not cover these days. While this excludes a number of large bands as a result, I really don’t care and they are already centered on many a site or festival. To progress, you actually have to seem like you give a shit about being a better person.

Now to some rad tours, videos and yadda yadda.

Seattle death doom merchants UN, hot off of releasing one of the the coolest albums in recent times Sentiment, are now touring the release further. CHRCH are in tow for this one and each show promises to be a special meeting of minds!

Maggot Heart are one of the most compelling bands in the world at the moment. The project spearheaded by Linnéa Olsson is driving, timely and colorful even at the bleakest points. It’s a great post-punk sounding platter of sounds and the newest release Dusk To Dusk is great. It really seems like a lot of care went into these skillful tunes.

Deadbird by Adam Peterson

Lastly today but not leastly, underground mainstays Deadbird kick total ass and have a music video out at mighty Kerrang! The long-running Arkansas psychedelic doom/sludge metal outfit – formed by current and former members of Rwake, Iron Tongue, Pallbearer, and more – released their first new album in a decade in October.

DEADBIRD’s first video comes in the form of “Heyday,” the longest track on III: The Forest Within The Tree. The video was directed and created by my homie David Brenner (Gridfailure) utilizing nature footage filmed by the band’s Alan Short and his wife Tera in Northwest Arkansas, and live footage of the band filmed by Frank Huang at Mr. Small’s Theatre in Pittsburgh during this year’s Migration Fest.

Alan Short offers, “My wife Tera and I shot all of the nature footage at the White Rock Wilderness Area and The Upper Buffalo National River, both in Northwest Arkansas. Our families have been seeking peace and refuge from the insanity and demands of city life in these areas for generations. Much of it has been protected from development, but we must stay vigilant. In fact, we just got news that the effort we have been involved in to deny industrial hog farming in the vicinity a permit that would have allowed them to continue polluting the river with run-off was successful! Permit denied!”

He adds, “I feel like the video is the perfect balance of elements for DEADBIRD; immersion in loud electric rock and roll and the contemplation of and within the natural world inform both our songwriting and our lives. Participating in music (both transmitting and receiving) is a powerful way to shed the static of the human world. Listening to a river’s water speak as it moves over rocks can remove the shadow from one’s heart. Putting these elements together shows not just who we are, but how we are.”
