PYRRHON is one of those bands that I love but whom for whatever reason I haven’t written enough about. Then I postponed writing about them out of guilt, haha. This is what happens when you blog too much. Kind of like years ago how I loved the first Pavement indie rock album so much I was afraid the rest would let me down, I heard some PYRRHON awhile back and was like, “daaaamn, son.” Then I hid from them in a medicated stupor. Afraid that I was drawn to this madness. But it is a liberating and necessary madness. “Turing’s Revenge” is nothing short of music as liberation.
Suffice to say, I am an idiot. Or maybe I didn’t want the world to end from their manic, psycho death metal spreading like an untamed virus.
Well, whatever. I guess I just don’t like the human race enough anymore to protect them or want to support the band better. It was a real drag they were dropped from Relapse after releasing The Mother of Virtues, a freak fest that actual schizophrenia, Gigan or true crime fans might understand but other people who cling to the death metal of yesteryear might just be ripped apart by. It perhaps didn’t help that the record had a sort of pregnant looking female creature on the cover with eyeballs and bugs swarming all over it. Like this one Trap Them t shirt on either Shirts and Destroy or Shirtkiller that no one ever buys that has a strangled baby on the shirt, it’s probably not gonna sell as much as the new 5 Seconds of Summer t shirt or some bubblegum crap.
Let’s face it. People have horrible taste (dead baby Trap Them shirt aside, cuz even I thought that was a pretty hideous design and I revere that band).
But I mean, people like gaudy, ugly, tacky horrible bands and their stupid neon designs and fake stories and fame pandering.
PYRRHON don’t do that stuff. They tour hard and hustle and write real music. They are almost apologetic when a press release describes their new EP as ,“
It’s kind of like Daughters, Brutal Truth, Merzbow and Autopsy created a batch of catchy-by-reverse-psychology songs, and then promised to never speak of them again. ”
They forgot to mention how “Viral Content” is like a sand paper condom skullfuck while Scratch Acid and Cephalic Carnage party like rockstars around a bonfire of melted, previously boned and discarded skulls.
SO what I’m saying is, please don’t let this band go away. Go stream their newish EP Growth Without End, the best thing they’ve perhaps done yet (although as an Invisibles fan I’m still partial to their old song “King of All Tears”. I get scared just thinking that name. But new jam “Forget Yourself” is as brilliant as death spazz grind gets, barely contained chaos.
