I was introduced to Dying Fetus through “Homicidal Retribution,” a track off the band’s 2007 release War of Attrition. By the time the line “You are fucking worthless, I don’t give a fuck about you!!” was growled out, I knew I was a fan. Now, ten years later the band returns again with their 8th studio album, which promises to smash faces and beat in skulls.
Ahead of the album’s impending release on June 23 via Relapse Records, I had the chance to talk with Dying Fetus drummer Trey Williams about Wrong One To Fuck With.
Check out the full interview here.
MR: When did you start writing the songs that eventually became Wrong One To Fuck With?
Trey: Between late 2015 and 2016. We had tours that split our time up. The touring definitely added time to the process.
MR: What was it like doing pre-production yourselves on this album? How do you think that impacted the album?
Trey: It’s was equal parts a work and fun. I had to learn how to operate the recording software, that was work. But hearing a song come together was the fun. I had more input on this album because I was the one doing the pre-production. My ability to be involved the whole time was the major difference.
MR: What was the recording process like? Did you do anything differently this time than you normally do?
Trey: No. We went back to Wright Way Studios and recorded with Steve Wright again. It was the same studio as our last two releases.
MR: When asked about this album in interviews you all talked a bit about the song “Induce Terror,” what was the process that led to it being on the deluxe edition of the album and not among the first ten tracks?
Trey: We tried to release “Induce Terror” during the time we were writing, but it was saved for the album. “Induce Terror” was recorded months before the rest of the album. It was meant to hold over our fans.
MR: There’s been some fuss made about the time it’s taken you all to release this album, do you think the wait pays off in the writing of the album?
Trey: Yes. It’s better to do something right. I don’t think I can recall another band that was truly happy with a rushed product. Delivering a quality product was very important. We had chances to release sooner but it would have comprised either the art or the music.
MR: You all have been touring a lot between the release of Reign Supreme and now. Are you all working on any new tour plans, or kind of taking it easy for the moment?
Trey: We are eager to bring this new album to our fans. We plan on touring extensively for this album (MR: You can catch Dying Fetus co-headlining Summer Slaughter 2017 with The Black Dahlia Murder From July 27 – August 26)
MR: What’s it been like working with Relapse on the writing, recording and promo process of this album?
Trey: Relapse has been very good to us. We never felt rushed by them. Relapse gave us all the freedom to create this album. Having the full support of our record label gives us confidence in our ability promote this album. We are behind relapse 110%, and relapse is behind us 110% also.
MR: Is there anything behind the album cover art or the name of the album other than sheer death metal brutality?
Trey: You figured it out. Our goal was to have a strong title and a intense visual to go along with the title.
MR: The logo for the album cover for ‘Wrong One To Fuck With’ is reminiscent of how the logo looked on 1995’s ‘Infatuation with Malevolence’ and 2000’s ‘Grotesque Impalement,’ was that an intentional throwback?
Trey: When the art was shown to us it was obvious to use the death metal style logo. It suits the cover to have the old logo there.
