Napalm Death is set to Re-release their album Scum. The album was remixed and will not only be released in CD form but also in full colored vinyl by Earache Records on March 5th.
What causes Napalm Death to re-release the album 25 years later? For one, it is the 25th Anniversary of the album which was originally released in July of 1987 and secondly, they would like to lessen the bad sound quality that “Loudness War” brings to albums after years of mixing them to sound louder.
Now, you’re probably thinking….”What the heck is ‘Loudness War’?” Loudness War is the process in which media is being transferred from one recording device to another and the sound is increased each time this is done. For example; when an artist records something in the studio (using tools such as equalizers and dynamic range compression to increase the volume of their sound) and then has the media transferred and ripped onto a CD, then you rip the CD to your laptop and into your iPod the sound quality must be increased each time in order for you to hear it with the full impact on the various devices. By doing so, once the media has reached it’s peak in sound it can cause distortion of the media clips causing the sound quality to become rather low quality.
And now you know!
