2016 has been an exemplary year for metal with vets from Anthrax to even Metallica rocking strong new material to upcomers like Slaves BC to Mantar to Electric Citizen kicking ass as well with solid outings. Perhaps no release has been more anticipated than the new Neurosis outing, as is usually the case whenever the revered icons of the true underground get the tape rolling.
I found the new one to be not as heavy as the obstinate masterpiece Given To The Rising nor as full of mind bending entropy as Honor Found In Decay. Fires Within Fires is top notch but finds the group leaner and very focused, as close to their live sound in recent years as I have perhaps heard them capture yet. From the overlapping vocals on the stomping but almost punk infused weirdness of “Fire Is The End Lesson” to the sprawling 10:37 trip out of “Reach”, there is something here for fans of most sides of the band.
We are still so lucky to have these guys in the ranks of rock n roll, always pushing and elevating critical thinking and artistry over sheer brawn or moronic posturing. Here is the stream of the new record at NOISEY.
NEUROSIS‘ Fires Within Fires will see worldwide release on CD, LP, cassette, and all digital platforms this Friday, September 23rd; see the wide array of preorder bundles and options RIGHT HERE.
