Song Of The Week: Dark Funeral’s “Unchain My Soul” is Surefire Swedish Satanism

The sixth Dark Funeral opus Where Shadows Forever Reign looks sick as heck. I can’t wait to hear the whole thing. Dig the potent nature art that sort of recalls the black and death metal traditions of album covers like Tales From The Thousand Lakes and In The Nightside Eclipse (that is, lots of dark blue, reverent but morbid energy and the sense of hovering power).

If the truly darkly epic new “Unchain My Soul” is an indicator of the rest of the album, fans are in for a major treat that fulfills the tantalizing promise the new line up revealed a year or so back with “Nail Them To The Cross”. The full record releases today via Century Media!

Lord Ahriman’s guitars absolutely propel this first shadowy realm of a number, while Dominator clearly…um, Dominates on drums. The Swedes have no problem delivering a hard yet esoteric attack that will likely appeal mightily to Tsjuder or earlier Watain fans, and there is no doubt the new vocalist is holding his own.
