Song of the Week: Otep’s “Zero”

“Mental glory hole infected with excess!”

We have a soft spot for the awesomeness of Otep around here, (and not just because I saw her guitarist Ari -formerly of Destrophy- politely yet totally slaughter an egotistical and drunken buffoon friend of mine at a push up contest- I make a cameo appearance btw, when I worked with Crusher Magazine years ago).

Otep says she doesn’t give a fuck (often in this song), but actually really cares a lot. She has kept different incarnations of her band alive and surviving through some of the more difficult years of being a band and while being a feminist. Otep Shamaya also never shies from injecting politics or equal rights and humanity into her songs, tackling depression issues or just trying to charge people up. Plus her interviews are generally way mroe interesting than most bands.

So yeah, if you are still writing her off for some nu metal influences or for rapping better than you (as a weight lifting white lesbian who has way more fans than you do), um…come back when you have achieved one of the numerous next to impossible things she has.
