Dutch symphonic metallers Within Temptation are celebrating the release of their first concept album, “The Unforgiving”. What exactly goes into writing a concept record? Sharon den Adel and Robert Westerholt discuss the inspiration behind this album.  The two discuss the songs “Why Not Me” which is the album’s opener and introduction to the story, and “Shot in the Dark”, the most crucial song of the album. They also talk about the subdues symphony work of “In the Middle of the Night” and “Faster”, the song “Fire and Ice”, and their power metal sound of “Iron”.

The band’s fifth studio album “The Unforgiving”, released March 29th on Roadrunner Records, is launched alongside both a comic book series and a series of short films that together encompass the story. The first single, “Faster”, was released on January 21, and the first short film, “Mother Maiden”, was released on January 31, while the second short film, “Sinéad”, was just released on March 21.

Check out part I of the track-by-track review here and the first video and short films here.
