High Cost

Formerly known as Septic Rot, the formidable NYC 5 piece now known as High Cost blew me away when I heard the advance promo of the up and coming act’s new forthcoming (Nov. 30th, Tridroid Records) Self-Titled release. It is so effin’ awesome to still get that feeling of excitement from a new band sometimes and to remember bygone days when word of mouth, the back of some zine or trusted sources was the main way to find out about extreme music, be it punk, crust or death metal.

Nowadays the internet allows us to almost know about too much and the process of separating the cream from the crap can feel like wading through seas of white noise at times waiting for a pearl of passion, but rest assured the real DIY scene is still thriving and out there. The cassette version of their debut EP contains 7 tracks on Side A and noise remixes and live recordings on side B. Lyrics deal with mental health struggles and are written by lead singer Kiki.

Honestly this almost made my year end list and was in the top twenty five before I had to trim down to fifteen for my final list. This band has huge potential and remind me of how fired up I was when I first heard cool world engaged bands like Landmine Marathon or Disfear or other ragers.

Check out the stomping intro to “Illusion” before it explodes into raw punk and shreds you to bits at lightning speed and then devolves into an awesome Cro-Magnon stomp and by then you will maybe be smooshed flat but hooked and want more.

Hether Fortune brings gravity and grace to Saint Vitus Bar

I’m on three hours sleep today from taking the late train back Upstate after seeing Hether Fortune at Saint Vitus Bar, rounding out a series of East Coast performances that included a stop at Basilica Soundscape (alongside the likes of Insect Ark, Spellling and Lightning Bolt) before she headed back West. The fucked up-ness of the MTA notwithstanding, it was definitely worth attending one of Fortune’s solo performances hot on the heels of the Wax Idols hiatus. I am bummed I had to run for the train before Hilary Woods and the other act so I could get home in time to scrub bar toilets in the morning like a true starving artist. Some strong coffee and an AK-47 vape from a delivery guy from hippie country and I was able to get through most of the overcast day in a sleepy, if reflective gothy haze, so don’t feel too bad for me. I am also proud of myself for not drinking anything but a club soda and a Japanese matcha tea with tapioca balls all night. It was fun to text with my friend Grasshopper from Mercury Rev about how rad the show was last night while he was telling me about how good a time he is having in Madrid right now eating awesome food, haha. I got him and a super talented trans violinist friend to both agree to be on my next solo album last night, so it’s been all win in my neck of the woods today between that and the concert.

It is SO inspiring when a performer can have a lot shift in their life (such as a band hiatus) and bravely manage to not skip a beat and creatively still go deeper than some fear to tread even at their most confident circumstances. I have a ton of respect for that because I know when bands I was in that I spent a lot of emotional energy on went on hiatus over the years I have done everything from just lock myself away doing speedballs (granted thankfully 20 years ago) to being less destructive but unable to be seen in daylight hours without ugly snot crying. So big kudos to Hether for sticking it to the man and just continuing to rock without missing a step. You slay.

Fortune played a short set but it was full of powerful material from a solo album she has been working on for months. A new song “Sister” is as strong as any of the best material she has been a part of over the years with through the roof emotive vocals from a genuine place. There was also a to die for song about The Joker that, honestly, Warner Bros and DC need to just fucking call her now. It would make me almost forgive them for that fucking awful, awful “Purple Lamborghini” video with Skrillex and Rick Ross with Jared Leto’s anemic mall joker on a speedboat, if I recall. Just do the right thing and call Hether up about using this song. It takes the famous “one bad day” Alan Moore theme and adds serious real world emotional weight with Fortune’s trademark melodic vocals that manage to be both mournful and yet uplifting at once.

Anyway, it was awesome to finally see Hether live. Major shout out and never stop what you are doing. Truly one of the most inspiring performers out there who I listen to much more than most other artists. It meant a lot to finally see live someone who has created a lot of music that has moved me even in these jaded ass cynical times. There were some looping difficulties Fortune tweeted about today during a cover of The Verve’s biggest hit “Bittersweet Symphony”, but it really wasn’t the end of the world at all. One small part was a little off time but Fortune made it work by sort of elongating the vocal cadence and it just came off as just more fuckin’ punk and sort of trippy, though she was being a little self deprecating about it afterward. For real though, there was so much pathos, cool ambient guitar sounds that would have raised even Trent Reznor’s eyebrows and poetry packed into that set that I am sure no one there felt anything but stoked.

On November 23rd, Cattle Decapitation will release their new rarities collection, Medium Rarities (that’s fucking hysterical), via Metal Blade Records. Featuring 6 previously unreleased pre-Human Jerky (1999) demos with front-man Travis Ryan on guitar (while also handling vocal duties), plus the long-sought-after To Serve Man (2002) bonus track, “Rotting Children For Remote Viewing” – in addition to other rarities (including the 6 songs from 2005’s split EP with Caninus!) – this compilation spans the band’s 22-year long career and is a must-have for any Cattle Decapitation fan.

Travis Ryan comments: “‘Medium Rarities‘ is a project we started about 10 years ago, and we’re thrilled to see it finally happen! In 2008, I started compiling unreleased tracks, import bonus tracks and 7″ releases for a rarities release – and even had the art created by the legendary Wes Benscoter, when we discovered that a key track was missing that we wanted to include on it. Our album ‘To Serve Man‘ had a bonus track ready in case there was a Japanese version released, but that never happened – and the band members’ copies of the track got lost, seemingly forever! We felt a rarities compilation released without that bonus track would be a weird idea, and so the project got shelved until recently. Heather Parsons of Metal Blade finally was able to unearth the track from an old disc that was tucked away in the Metal Blade vault! The lyrics to the song were unearthed along with it, and so we quickly got to work with compiling and mastering the rest. This is a nice, concise compilation of unreleased and hard-to-find tracks, complete with lyrics and cheeky vinyl color variant schemes, based on how people like their meat prepared. The European vinyl variants also resemble diseased meats…But my favorite part is the cassette, which was created to look like the vintage cassette releases we grew up on – complete with the old school Metal Blade axe logo! A lot of thought and work went into this release, and we are pleased to finally be able to present to you…’Medium Rarities‘!”

Cattle Decapitation dates with Suffocation, add new additions

CATTLE DECAPITATION will play two special shows in Southern California next week supporting Napalm Death, at San Diego’s Brick By Brick and Los Angeles’ Teragram Ballroom respectively. The performances serve as a precursor to the band’s month-long North American tour this fall supporting Suffocation. The journey runs from October 21st through November 17th. With legendary blast drummer Pete Sandoval ready to revive TERRORIZER for another momentous grinding onslaught,  the groundbreaking band have united with The End Records for the release of their long-anticipated new full-length, Caustic Attack. Produced by Jason Suecof (Deicide, All That Remains, Kataklysm, Battlecross) at Audiohammer Studios in Sanford, Florida and featuring the apocalyptic cover art of Timbul Cahyono (Rotting Corpse, Pyrexia), the record serves as the band’s first studio offering in six years.

“The original TERRORIZER didn’t have solos, so we took the same approach,” Lee Harrison says. “It was just riff after killer riff. That was an interesting challenge for me – to keep the music fresh without relying on solos. But the great thing about not having solos is it allows us to keep a dense sound as a three-piece. When you put leads in there, you need a second guitar or else the bottom falls out. Staying a three-piece makes it easier to travel and tour, and we didn’t want to mess with that formula.”
 
Now that Sandoval is devoting all his time and effort to TERRORIZER (he left Morbid Angel in 2013), he plans to tour extensively and then record another album. The six-year curse is officially broken.

“It feels so great to be back playing every day,” Sandoval says. “I worked really hard on my recovery and all that work is really paying off now because when I play these songs I feel the same way I did in 1990 or 2000. I feel young again and I can play with no problem. And that’s hard to do because this new album has a lot of changes, double-bass, fast blast beats. You name it.”

TERRORIZER’s Caustic Attack will see release via The End Records this fall. Further details including track teasers to be unveiled in the coming weeks. In the meantime you can never get enough World Downfall, a stone cold mandatory classic that still smokes most stuff released now.

Wednesday Whammy: Pig Destroyer, Twilight Fauna, A Dying Planet

Hey there killers and saints. We made it to Wednesday. Gotta make sure each day these days, ya know? Good news is lots of cool music haps today and #ptsdawarenessday is spreading depression awareness, so that is good stuff. Bad news is fake SCOTUS justice/stolen seat Gorsuch is helping push through more and more fascism and now Union rights are getting screwed badly via #Janus ruling.  Mitch McConnell is the ugliest piece of shit walking besides Trump. Yuck. I guess when we are all exploited even more we can all listen to Municipal Waste in the gutter and drink cheap beer still, but it would be nice as shit to have work protections and a living wage, y’know? On the plus side, Alexandria Ocasia-Cortez won and that is big news.

And now the metal! If you are not scrambling for your life from an onslaught of MAGA troll negativity or Gestapo-like ICE agents, spend some time in the realm of metal when you need some self care and serious riffage. Today I have three cool developments for you to make you feel a little better about our imperiled world.

A Dying Planet (I know the name is not exactly PMA, hahaha) have a debut out in August. The band features members of Zero Hour and Cynthesis and are a progressive group you will want to know about. The outfit has completed its debut album, Facing The Incurable, and has slated it for independent release in August.

The band also features twin brothers getting progressive together, so that is pretty cool. I like the album name as it sort of reminds me of the tipping point for ecological harm. Wake up, people.

Pig Destroyer news! How we savor those words! The notorious extreme metal band are celebrating twenty one years wrecking ears this year and are playing Decibel’s Metal & Beer Fest in December (along with Testament doing a New Order and The Gathering set, wtf!!! So cool… plus Triptykon doing a Celtic Frost set, fuuuuck!!) . A new Pig Destroyer album is also coming this year in September from the fine folks at Relapse. Watch this thing below for Head Cage!

And now, for the raddest news of the day of all from mighty Twilight Fauna. I am jamming hard the new “Crooked Road” track right now and dear lord the awesomeness is real. The transition around the one minute mark from fast BM to ambient tranquility was pretty stunning. Please support one of the coolest and most genuine acts around.

Chelsea Grin release “See You Soon”

Utah deathcore metallers Chelsea Grin have released their latest song “See You Soon.”

“See You Soon” comes off the band’s upcoming album Eternal Nightmare, which is out July 13 via Rise Records.

The band will be hitting the road, joining the last cross-country Warped Tour, starting on June 21.

This will be the band’s first album with Tom Barber as vocalist.

Do you know Transient? You certainly should. The Portland grind band completely smoke a lot of the competition and have finally announced a new record. After a half decade the band- featuring members of Landmine Marathon, Endorphins Lost, and more – will soon return with their second LP, Sources Of Human Satisfaction, set for release via Six Weeks Records in August. The album has the band working with Eric Wood of Bastard Noise and is certainly one of the things to be most excited for in 2018 in heavy rock. Shit, “heavy rock” hardly covers the effects of listening to the severe jackhammer mishap sounds of Transient’s full fledged extreme glory.

The band offers, “The title and concept of the album Sources Of Human Satisfaction deals with human happiness and unhappiness – how people aim to please themselves often through external factors and achievements rather than through a focus on and cultivation of internal controls.  Why do we seek what we seek and desire what we desire?”
 
Sources Of Human Satisfaction was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Greg Wilkinson at Earhammer Studios Oakland, California, with additional recording by Dylan Ludwig at Raven Sound Studio Prescott, Arizona, after which Wood’s noise elements were recorded by Michael Rozon at Speed Semen Clove Factory Sun City, California. The album is completed with artwork by S. Jordan Palmer and Alexa R. Simpson and layout/photos by the band.

Six Weeks Records will release Sources Of Human Satisfaction on LP and digital formats on August 10th; watch for audio premieres, preorders, and more to be released in the weeks ahead.

Napalm Death reveal frenetic “Standardization” video

Grindcore legends Napalm Death released Coded Smears And More Uncommon Slurs recently, a collection of rarities that is as good as most of their records and earned a very high review from yours truly. We should thank our lucky stars that the band remain so high up in the ranks of important acts to this day, a standard-bearing group if ever there was one for how much metal can mean in a day and age when many heroes let us down. The perfect trustworthy go to band for headbangers hoping to survive dystopian times.

“Standardization” is positively ferocious and the video imparts a severe sense of frantic rage struggling to be so fierce that it is actually heard, cutting through and above the racket of the apathetic mental smog of society. It is all I could ask for from the band. Check it out below.

In a time when the world (or at least America) seems to have gone full throttle casting a shadow of STUPID across the face of the globe, it is reassuring to know a metal institution like mighty UK grind legends Napalm Death are as unstoppable and resonant as ever. Coded Smears And More Uncommon Slurs is a compilation of sold out split EP and Japanese bonus tracks, but it feels as potent and needed as any of their skull crushing political diatribes aka full lengths.

From the mid tempo barrage of “It Failed To Explode” from the Utilitarian sessions to the cinematic experimental unease of the almost Fantomas sounding  “Oxygen Of Duplicity” fittingly from a split with the grunge godfathers The Melvins to the 2:27 perfection of “Critical Gluttonous Mass” from the lazy consumer skewering  Apex Predator – Easy Meat time frame, any of these could have held down a place on the records they didn’t make it on and been just fine. There is literally no quality difference, it all rages. Barney, Shane and the boys bleed for this stuff and deliver 100% like nobody’s business – but you probably knew that already if you are reading it. “Aim Without An Aim” is especially unhinged, Barney’s vocals sounding downright demonic even for him.

Napalm Death, you know what you get. Classic sounding riffs that nonetheless push to further the grind into the future, scorched Earth rage channeled through meaningful progressive topics, a contempt for apathy, pulverizing rhythm section madness, dissonance and destruction.

As bassist Shane Embury recently said in regards to the compilation ,”…We have written so many tracks and the years go by so quick that you forget just how fucking great these songs are!” 

I gotta agree with the guy. There is not a dud in the bunch, despite the piecemeal approach of a compilation. 2CD, 2LP’s of top shelf grind and extreme metal. You’ve even got a mean Despair cover, a Sacrilege cover and some other goodies. Plus you get titles that are pretty much as metal sounding as you can get this side of Carcass. I mean “Omnipresent Knife In Your Back”? C’mon! That’s rad.

Cheers to the band for remaining in the fight and on the front lines of extreme music and activism for so long. People need to see that kind of passion as a rebuttal to apathy. Such respect for this band.

Napalm Death release “Oh So Pseudo” single

British extreme metallers Napalm Death have released their first single, “Oh So Pseudo,” off of their upcoming compilation album Coded Smears and More Uncommon Slurs.

The album is due out March 30 via Century Media Records.

This is a compilation of “rarities and covers,” according to bassist Shane Embury:

“We are very thrilled to be finally releasing this compilation of rarities and covers from the past 10 years. Napalm Death is a band that gives 100% when writing a song, so the songs included on this comp were saved originally for split EP’s now sold out or vinyl editions of our albums or to become Japanese bonus tracks. When I was compiling the track-listing I was struck by how exciting again these tunes are to me. I had actually forgotten some of them, haha! We have written so many tracks and the years go by so quick that you forget just how fucking great these songs are! We will most certainly be blasting a few of these out live on our upcoming shows…Cheers and see you on the road!”

Barney Greenway performs with Sick Of It All

Hardcore idols Sick Of It All have posted a clip of the band performing a stone cold classic “My Life” from Blood, Sweat and No Tears in Tokyo with Barney from fuckin’ Napalm Death on vocals! The crowd is of course loving it. Good times and just what the doctor ordered to cheer you up after a week of deaths in the metal scene.

Cattle Decapitation Euro 2017 Tour Documentary Online

Expect a new record on the horizon from extreme art grinders Pig Destroyer.

The celebrated band has entered the studio to begin recording their 6th studio album and follow-up to 2012’s Book Burner. The yet-to-be-named full-length is being recorded at the band’s own Visceral Sound Studios in Bethesda, MD and recorded/produced by guitarist Scott Hull. The album is expected to be released Summer 2018 via Relapse Records.

Additionally, PIG DESTROYER has announced a few exclusive concerts for the winter. The band will tour the weekend of December 7-9 in California with a tremendously intense line up featuring Despise You, Necrot & labelmates Call of the Void!

PIG DESTROYER kicks off 2018 with two East Coast shows in New Jersey and in Long Island at Obnoxious Noise Fest. The band has also been confirmed for Maryland Deathfest 2018 on May 26 in Baltimore, MD. Stay tuned for further tour details in the near future.

Corrupt Moral Altar release fearsome “Eunoia” as free download

I was feeling pretty glum after the news Trap Them is calling it a day, but it seems – much like in Clone Wars when Anakin went to that weird ass planet Mortis and sort of accidentally balanced the force by screwing up royally – that the grind force that unites us all in hellbound moshery has decided the scales must be balanced with good news today as well for the genre. Yes, obviously I am getting around to telling you the wonderful skull punting news that Corrupt Mortal Altar, one of the more insane UK extreme bands, just dropped a new album for FREE download called Eunoia.  Pick it up HERE!

I have listened to it all the way few twice already and it is a serious rage fest. The pummeling “Engineering Consent”, more sort of rocking Letters Organize meets She Rides reminiscent “Night Chant” and the deadly barrage of “The All Consuming Self” (which would find the band in good company with some of Throatruiner’s current roster on a bill), are all impressive. The whole thing really burns and it is very cool of the band to take the risk of name your pricing it. Obviously the music is the most important part of this, but remember to try and support the band also so artists can keep making their work a priority.

I don’t have any of the production info but this thing sounds amazing and will sear your orifices shut. Hails.
