I’ve been eagerly awaiting Sacred Reich news and it has arrived along with a brain pounder of a new music video. Awakening is the new album and the title track can be consumed below. I am loving the undeniable fact that they haven’t lost a step. The hard charging guitars and bellowed older metal vocal vibes paired with a particularly blunt yet thrashing socially aware energy, it’s all there. This song isn’t their fastest number but variety is a good thing when it comes to thrash.  Someone put these guys on the road with C.O.C. soon and make me a happy camper.  The band’s first new record in twenty three years will drop on August 23rd via Metal Blade Records!

Dave Mustaine diagnosed with throat cancer

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Monday, June 17, 2019 at 9:36 AM (PST)

Megadeth‘s Dave Mustaine has been diagnosed with throat cancer and has left a message to fans, embedded below. I don’t usually post about Megadeth anymore since awhile ago as a fan I felt very let down by some of Mustaine’s conspiracy theory-esque words about a theater shooting, but Mustaine is an important figure, a human being and people can embody many things in a lifetime. It is the day after Father’s Day and my own dad battled cancer for over a decade and I wouldn’t wish that on anyone, let alone someone who wrote an album that changed my life forever like Countdown To Extinction. It would certainly be petty and not being a bigger person to not wish Dave the best after such a scary diagnosis.

Wishing Dave a speedy recovery and hope he is able to get ahead of this. As he noted in his post to supporters, he has gotten through bad things before, so here is hoping this is another obstacle MegaDave can soon put behind him.

I’ve been diagnosed with throat cancer. It’s clearly something to be respected and faced head on – but I’ve faced obstacles before. I’m working closely with my doctors, and we’ve mapped out a treatment plan which they feel has a 90% success rate. Treatment has already begun. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Unfortunately, this requires that we cancel most shows this year. The 2019 Megacruise will happen, and the band will be a part of it in some form. All up to date information will be at megadeth.com as we get it. Megadeth will be back on the road ASAP. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Meanwhile, Kiko, David, Dirk and I are in the studio, working on the follow up to Dystopia – which I can’t wait for everyone to hear. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m so thankful for my whole team – family, doctors, band members, trainers, and more. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’ll keep everyone posted. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ See you soon, Dave Mustaine

Hey rockers and rollers. I’m winding down near the end of an interesting day.

Started estradiol on a lower dose again working with my doctor and as a multi-gender person I am excited that I am figuring out what is right for me with the help of someone I trust. PLEASE support Planned Parenthood who offer more than just -ALSO VITAL- abortion services. It is 2019, not the god damn 1950’s. Anyway, I swear to God I have been back on it a few hours after a year and a half and feel like zero desire to drink or smoke a cigarette and very clear headed and motivated, which is fucking wonderful.

It is the anniversary of the release of St. Anger today – released June 5th, 2003- as I write this and so I have been rocking out to the Metallica/Jah Rule collab (I am just gonna pretend it was called “Jump In the Fyre”) and wondering how even Swizz Beatz didn’t tell Lars to fix his snare sound. That said, I honestly listen to that album low key on the regular and it is entertaining and has some bad ass riffs, so hey – it’s entertainment to me. I remember the day I bought it on cd I went and bought a Guiness at a now discontinued chain restaurant in the Hudson Valley Mall and at the time was stoked that they were playing so fast again. I also remember at the Coheed listening party I was at for In Keeping Secrets… Mic Todd was being hysterical and answering his phone “St Anger” everytime someone called him. He prob doesn’t remember that but it had me in stitches that night.

Anyway, Every band has eras where they are struggling and at least the dudes got through it. Plus, there’s a few certified bangers on there like “Frantic” – you know you love that intro- and the riffs (not the vocals) of “Invisible Kid”, for example. I am glad dudes have at least revisited “Frantic” live and let Kirky cut loose a little more.

In other news, Varg got his fash dork garden karate YouTube channel banned finally and all I can say is…Varg sucks. Anyone upset by that is a moron or probably a “Conservative Crybully”. Go buy So Much For The Tolerant Left today like I did to celebrate.

In other news, my gf Globelamp’s traumatic story of the horrible time she had around her time in Foxygen has finally been picked up by Pitchfork and hopefully will now not be ignored by other outlets that used to kiss that band’s ass for being on a big, enabling indie label. I should certainly hope my regular readers here don’t think we are part of some insane ongoing murder plot allegation and thank you to everyone who believed us about the DARVO and who have supported us during the months since I have been able to see my partner. It’s been a lonely and stressful ass year and I have tried hard to keep things rolling along anyway. Thank you very much Hether Fortune and one or two other friends who reached out to ask if I was doing self care regimen when I was having a hard time with all this recently. That meant a lot. I am feeling better and thankful for this scene and the good people.

We don’t have the money to keep flying her back and forth from New York where we live to California where court is and we want to get an RO granted on Sam from Foxygen. A temporary one was granted but he has hidden from it despite knowing about it through a twitter exchange and now this huge Pitchfork article. Globelamp on the other hand has complied with every court demand and appearance. Sam also has come onto our Instagrams and if he is allegedly scared of us why would he and his partner antagonize us? He came onto Globelamp’s IG and was probably loving that he could leave comments and because of DARVO she couldn’t respond, so disgusting.

It also is telling that this unbiased article caused their entire camp (including the predatory trolls who constantly try to gaslight and trigger my partner’s ptsd and who lie and say I am a sex slave in a dungeon and have made transphobic statements mocking me as a non binary person with no condemnation of the transphobia and lies from fake peace and love ambassadors Foxygen) to freak out online like babies caught with their hand in the cookie bag. Jagjaguwar should drop them immediately. Anyway, I wanted to say thanks to some of the metal/punk community and people like Timothy Heller and Meredith Graves who offered Lizzie some support. It really meant a lot to Lizzie/Globelamp.

Now back to some proper metal news!

Korn thought it was a good idea for Brian to jam on their most iconic song “Blind” with a massive GOP homophobe during Pride Month. I have been a fan since the debut and am beyond disgusted at this bullshit. Will not be linking to the atrocity and it is going to be awhile before I consider listening to them again or supporting unless they acknowledge that was some serious wack bullshit. Very bummed out and love their records. You can’t just pretend Mike Huckabee is some chummy dude. He is horrid. I did laugh online that someone wrote on twitter they should have played “Ass Itch”.

Amon Amarth news! The Viking warriors of riffs, beer and roars have a new song out about Captain America’s…er, Thor’s hammer. Check out the bad ass video below! Fight sequence/concept rules! “Working the bellows…!” AHHHH!!! METAL! Hope you all have a killer rest of the week and stand up for one another, metal friends!

May Metal Mass Destruction: Exumer, Wormwitch, EZOX tidbits

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Thursday, May 23, 2019 at 9:55 AM (PST)

Exumer want you to know about tick prevention/Photo credit: Silvy Maatman

Today we would like to start by saying an RIP to icons of metal art Rosław Szaybo and Larry Carroll, known for their work with Judas Priest and Slayer, respectively.

“Our memories of Rosław Szaybo are strong and he will always be remembered for his now legendary covers he created for Judas Priest as well as the Priest logo – our thoughts and condolences are with his family – love to Ros,” Judas Priest said of Roslaw.

I also want to say that today, 5/23 is always a somber day for me for personal reasons, the anniversary of the passing of my first drummer. It is important to me to spread his drumming since his life was cut short rather young and he was a great talent in the 90’s Woodstock music scene and good guy, so humor my tweet here – please. One love.

On a brighter note, we have a lot of powerful metal news for you today.

First up, metal masters Exumer have a new video out.

The idea behind Exumer’s new video clip “King’s End” is to visually pay homage to the look and visual aesthetics of the MTV/Headbanger’s Ball era clips from the late 80s and early 90s. Especially when CGI became available as a tool to add effects that were otherwise financially impossible to obtain. The clip was entirely shot, edited and directed by Goreminister in Essen (Turock Club)/Germany during Exumer’s last European dates.

Exumer singer Mem V. Stein: “We were approached by our buddy Goreminister, who has his own You Tube channel and is a pretty known character in the Metal scene in and around Essen, if we would be interested in a new video that resembles old Headbanger’s Ball clips. We instantly were on board with the concept and are now excited to launch something that uniquely resembles the early 90s over the top videos we devoured back when Metal was still on Television.”

Get ready for the fun contradictory combination of nostalgic feelings for a new music video, lifers.

What have you all been listening to? I am real keen on the new Wormwitch Heaven That Dwells Within that came out in April, which I finally purchased last night HERE. Even ordered the physical cd cuz it will be nice to have for driving in areas where streaming isn’t so good. Super snarled, dourly melodic blackened deathy thrashened song writing dark majesty with just enough balance between bite and precision.

About one year and a half after the official release of their EP Crawl To Paradise (2018), French melodic metallers EZOX just officially released its debut album called One Last Breath, produced @ Recuiem Prod studios (All Dogmas We Hate) and available right now for CD & Digital editions on bandcamp and the main legal platforms.

In addition to the album-release, the band also unveiled a 4K music video for the single “For Today” available on YouTube platform.

Stream the whole album on Bandcamp .

Shattered Sun release new song “Shades of Melodie”

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Monday, May 20, 2019 at 4:43 PM (PST)

Hey gang. I am all achy from rocking out on Sunday to P.O.D. in Poughkeepsie and having fun over the weekend. They rocked the house and also dedicated their mellower song “Beautiful” to Clown from Slipknot in the wake of his daughter’s tragic passing and it was a moving moment. I’d also like to say briefly that Terry from Obituary’s daughter also just passed away in a tragic accident and to please help if you can.

There is an online fundraiser for her kids and stuff and it is very sad what happened. I might not have always agreed with some of Butler’s recent politics about Trump’s wall the last few years but I certainly have compassion for anyone who lost a child to tragedy and I think it is very important we lift one another up in the metal scene through things like this. It’s a meaningful way we can create more healing and understanding.

Texas Metalcore/trad thrash crossover band Shattered Sun have a new album on the way and have released a stunner of a new track via Outburn and a must read interview for fans of the band on their newest era. The song also has to do with daughters, which I guess is our unintentional theme today – but that’s ok! Be thankful for your loved ones.

All I can say is the song represents a major leap forward for the dudes and the new line-up and changes in the act seem healthy and exciting. I love this band and have always had good experiences talking to them or seeing them live and fully support them as an important younger rising act. I think they are between labels at the moment but that likely wont last long and either way we will support them around these parts.

Vocalist Marcos Leal says of the new song, “This song is particularly special to me given it’s about my daughter Melodie. It’s safe to say that becoming a father changes a man – it becomes your every living and dying breath to be the guide and protector to your child. I know a lot of people can relate to the message of this song and I’m excited for you all to get a taste of the new era of Shattered Sun!”

Burn Baby: Adzes, Vowws, Lord Dying, L7 and Joan Jett news items

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Thursday, February 28, 2019 at 1:19 PM (PST)
L7 will scatter the rats with effortless glances and …RIFFS.

Sometimes I feel like the metal and punk scene has their psychic periods synchronized in that it seems like my inbox will have several days of fairly cool news and yadda yadda and then suddenly EVERYONE dumps press releases for a ton of cool stuff all at once. It happens every week where one or two days are monster compared to others. It is hard enough keeping up on one pop star at a time these days, haha. The tea is always spilling and the party continues. Add multiple genres in there entirely unrelated to the mainstream and throw in a lot of underground constant happenings as well as keeping up with the shitstorm of American politics and a zillion daily more mundane tasks and you have a semblance of the tornado in my head, lol.

Anyway, today I have waded through the cluttered moat of press releases or things I found myself through web crawlin’ and have metaphorically slid under the falling portcullis to take over Castle awesomeness and command my faithful followers (no one) to blow horns and cry the news of the raddest musical happenings of the day from the parapets on high and out over the numb minded kingdom of internet buffoons who shall surely be enrichened by my curated selection of newsworthy rad rockin’ tunes. Ok, dork fest over.

Let’s kick out the jams! So the Redbait peeps, an awesome hardcore band I am a fan of, were posting yesterday for people to check out this anti-capitalist doom dirge band Adzes. Well it turns out the stuff is super awesome and inspiring material. Very well paced dynamics and the songs are very self-aware in a good way, knowing when to vary between melodic guitars that tug on emotions as you conceptualize the rug of people’s lives being ripped out from under them in harsh, cannibalistic financial rat-race. Climate//Capital is a must hear of trudgy, Godfleshy clangy bass, more Jesu-like semi-post rock passages paired with very introspective lyrics on society and powerful screams that feel rooted in the metal side of real class war punk. Really inspiring shit and well worth the listen. Plus, it came out early!

In case you missed it, head to REVOLVER to see my friend’s VOWWS dope new video for their “Structure Of Love” redux feat. Chino Moreno. His name sounds familiar? Hmmm. Just kidding. That’s the man right there! Check it out HERE. VOWWS always put great effort into their work and aesthetic touches, regardless if they are making a video or photo shoot for themselves or helping other artists. I’m super into the kind of David Lynchy upside down shot of Rizz with a “lost” highway juxtaposed underneath her and then the image morphs into a spider, rad shit. Woot woot! They stay innovating and at the top of their game, always moving forward. One of the freshest acts in the game, miles ahead of most shit right now. And so many good layers and hooks. Word.

Sludgers Lord Dying haven’t been heard from in a little bit. I was actually wondering about them the other day. Turns out a lot is on the docket for these dudes in 2019. Lord Dying are working with eOne and have a new album out  Mysterium Tremendum worldwide on April 26th. The music I have heard so far sounds like they are holding down their hard rockin’ roots but expanding into a little headier territory with a bit slicker production like has happened likewise to Baroness, Pallbearer etc. over time. It sounds dope though! That’s no shade. Just not a little slicker compared to how gnarlified the earlier records were.

LORD DYING’s Mysterium Tremendum will be released on CD, double LP, and digital formats. For preorder options go to smarturl.it/LordDyingMT

In the meantime, stream opening track “Envy The End” at  below.

Grunge queens and all around biggest bad asses L7 are working with Joan Jett’s record label! Fuck yeah! I am so stoked for this. One of the greatest bands to ever come out of the United States and deserving of all the praise we can muster.

I like how the newer L7 stuff has still rocked but also been a little catchier like Donita’s excellent solo albums which existed betwixt the band’s hiatus and reforming. “Burn Baby” will get in your ear all day and the new video is below! L7 still make you unsure if you’d rather jump in mud, pogo, bar fight or fall in punk rock love as it should be. The new album is called Scatter The Rats and there is no planet in any multiverse where it wont be one of the coolest albums of 2019, scene.

Public Memorial for Bruce Corbitt

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at 9:23 AM (PST)

As the metal community still reels from the sad turn of cancer events leading to the loss of Bruce Corbitt, a memorial has been announced for the Rigor Mortis/Warbeast hero.

Reads the public memorial page, “We will come together to celebrate and remember a great man who touched the hearts of so many people in this world. We will show our love and support for his wife Jeanna, his daughter Chyna, his stepson Lyric, and BRUCE‘s amazing mother Glenda. We will celebrate in the most beautiful way possible by honoring BRUCE‘s final wishes to make his memorial just the way he wanted it. Additional details on special presentations, guest musicians, and other surprises are still being worked out. Stay tuned and You Know Damn Well!”

CORBITT played what he thought would be his final show with Warbeast — a special set at the annual Fort Worth Weekly Music Awards Ceremony where the band was inducted into the 2018 Fort Worth Music Hall Of Fame — last July, at the time noting, I’m really excited and thankful to the Fort Worth Weekly for showing us this much appreciation. I’m proud that I’m even feeling good enough right now to be able to attempt it. But I do know my limitations and I will be careful. All I know is I get to experience that feeling of being on stage again… and that’s why I keep on fighting. Because good things do finally happen if you can just hang in there long enough. You know damn well!”

Anselmo gave a warm tribute speech and performance at a show with The Illegals for Bruce the day he died that you can see HERE. Regardless of if you are in a camp that forgives Phil or not for the Dimebash incident, I hope we can all agree this was a terrible loss for everyone and that this was the right thing to do for Bruce and cool of Phil and his band who lost a real friend.

Dust Bolt – “Trapped In Chaos”

Posted by longhairedpoet on Sunday, December 16, 2018 at 5:25 PM (PST)

German thrashers Dust Bolt are preparing to return with their fourth full-length album Trapped In Chaos on January 18 via Napalm RecordsTrapped In Chaos is the follow-up to 2016’s Mass Confusion.

The band bring together an enjoyable mixture of a wide range of thrash variances. While you won’t find any Venom-esque darker, heavier types of thrash on this offering, for example, you also won’t find Dust Bolt playing the same blistering guitar for speeds sake for eleven tracks straight.

Check out my full review of Trapped In Chaos here.

Legion of the Damned – “Slaves of the Shadow Realm”

It will be the band’s thirteenth album overall.

My favorite albums of 2018 (Jessica Fisher)

Posted by longhairedpoet on Monday, November 26, 2018 at 9:27 AM (PST)

What a year! Calendar years for me, since I still live by a U.S. academic calendar, starts and ends on a “break.” This time last year I hadn’t really ever seen any of the Star Wars movies before, and over winter break last year I watched them all. This time last year I was finishing up my first semester of grad school and this year I’m finishing up my fourth. This time last year I didn’t believe in the idea of Georgia as a purple state, after Stacy Abrams performance in the midterm, I’m more intrigued than I’ve ever been before. I’m hoping to graduate with my Master’s in American Studies in May. When I write this piece next year, I could  be writing it as a PhD student (or an adjunct professor). I’ve made a conscious effort to listen to more new music in general, inside and outside of metal, this year, and it’s been a good experience. You can check out some of my finds and favorites over at my Medium.

My album of the year: Catharsis by Machine Head

Catharsis has been a necessary album for getting through this year. From the opening decree of “Volatile,” “Awww, fuck the world!” to the folk-punk inspired “Bastards” to the 8 minute “Heavy Lies The Crown” to the closing track, “Eulogy,” this mix of personal and political helped me process and work through my own anger and angst at the socio-political realities we find ourselves in.

Check out the rest of my list here.

Pope Richard

Pope Richard of Blackened Death Records and numerous not so subtle projects (including the controversial and excellent Gaylord, the bleak Suicide Wraith and many more) put out our selection for best comp of the year with the vital Worldwide Organization Of Metalheads Against Nazis II.

Being as polarizing a figure as Richard is usually means you might be an edge lord, but in this case it is refreshingly because Richard is doing so much right. As if writing a song called “Varg Impaled” wasn’t enough of a gift to the scene, Pope Richard also has contributed a guest blogger year end list to us here at Metal Riot this year! Hails and thanks!

Peruse below Richard’s thoughts on 2018’s metal scene, putting out the comp and what the best albums were of the year in their estimation.

It’s mid November and the nights are long and chilly. The days are short and chilly. And I’m in London, so things are /extra/ grey. But as the SADness descends upon us like a wet and fleeting snow, we have heavy metal to warm our hearts and lift our spirits.

2018 was a huge year for metal and all of its subgenres. We have had great releases from death metal bands, black metal acts, doom metal groups, and the immense push of the new wave of anti-fascist heavy metal has /really/ ramped up. For more on that you can check out Blackened Death’s releases “WOMAN” and “WOMAN II” on our Bandcamp. We managed to raise over £2000 between both comps for Doctors Without Borders due to this massive anti-fascist metal community that is pulling together. 2019 is gonna be B I G.

But that’s enough self-aggrandizing – let’s talk about some damn ass heavy metal.

More BELOW.
