The Haunted release “Brute Force” music video

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Friday, June 23, 2017 at 10:21 AM (PST)

The Haunted have released a song from upcoming ninth studio album Strength In Numbers. Recorded at Parlour Studios in the UK with producer Russ Russell (Napalm Death, Dimmu Borgir, The Exploited), the album will be released worldwide via CENTURY MEDIA RECORDS on August 25, 2017. The song continues the band’s recent trend of focusing more solely on their aggression, since the return of vocalist Marco Aro (who is a screamer). I’m especially liking Jonas’ bass attack on this one, giving the track extra punch.

THE HAUNTED checked in to comment on the track as follows:
We’re very excited to finally be able to air our first single from the new album Strength In Numbers and let it set the tone for the brutality of the album. “Brute Force” is one of those songs written in the early stage of making the album and shows our hunger to make new music, uncompromising, unforgiving and just to the point.”

Shattered Sun became a thrash band we loved after vocalist Marcos Leal sold us on his passion for thrashin’ during an interview with Metal Riot a few years ago. We knew we had to keep an eye on this bunch. Now after a lot of growth and touring the band are back with The Evolution of Anger next month (Pre Order HERE).

Marcos stops by again today to participate in our new formative years column with five records that changed his own life, as surely as his own band has made a difference for someone from a new generation. Check out his picks and Shattered Sun’s new video for “Burn It Down” BELOW!

Today we visit Argentina for some pulverizing thrashing mastery. GRANADA bring us their newest single “Solve et Coagula” and we dare you not to bang your heads! This is focused with a modern and precise kill factor but also has a very raw edge of anger for old school fans of 90’s metal and hardcore. Fans of Machine Head, Krisiun or any any proper death/thrash will be blown away.

GRANADA was formed in the year 2008 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Founded by Guillermo Estévez (vocals and guitar), the band´s debut show was in 2010 with Black Dahlia Murder (USA), and continued with a series of shows in every possible venue in Buenos Aires and the rest of Argentina. With three full lengths and one EP, the band has crossed the border by touring the neighboring countries and achieving huge admiration from audiences all over the world.

GRANADA achieves their own sound with their 4th album Sincronizado, recorded at “El Pie Recording Studio” and Chulengo, produced by Guillermo Estévez. The album will be released by Symbol of Domination Prod. (Purchase HERE), and will be distributed by Icarus Records (Argentina) and Blacktape Unorthodox Records (Argentina)

The band’s remarks on the track are as follows:

“Solve” or “solutio” refers to the breaking down of elements and “Coagula” refers to their coming together. In the process of transmuting base metal into gold or arriving at the Philosopher’s stone, this contained both literal and hidden meaning. Solve et Coagula expresses transmutation from base to a finer state, the perpetual goal of spiritual growth and human evolution.

Charlie Benante Relaunches Benante’s Blend Coffee Line

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at 2:28 PM (PST)

A bunch of cool bands from Life Of Agony to Tombs have branched out into the interesting realm of coffee sales on the side. This is not a joke. Whatever pays the bills or is a passion, right? I mean Purple Pam, Bad Brains and a bunch of other bands made hot sauce as well! And we know a lot of groups have made beer, from Daylight Dies to Sepultura Weizen to Kid Rock’s shitty “Badass American Lager”!

Anthrax‘s Charlie Benante loves coffee. This might explain how at his age he is still able to fucking out slay pretty much every other drummer in thrash with the debatable exception of Lombardo and Hoglan. Is caffeine the secret to the power of Suzerain’s intro? Who knows.

Anyway, having teamed up to collaborate with Chicago’s Dark Matter Coffee Co., his brand “Benante’s Blend” has undergone enhancements that include higher quality choice of coffee beans, a change in the way the beans are roasted that give the coffee a larger and more flavorful taste, and other tweaks, Benante and Dark Matter are proud to announce the relaunch of “Benante’s Blend.”

The coffee will still be available in two varieties, the “Be All End All” blend which is a dark roast with a real kick, and the “Forever Metal” blend, a milder coffee.  And, despite the upgrades, Benante is keeping the price the same.
“I’d been hearing about Dark Matter for awhile,” said Benante.  “They’re based in Chicago where I live, so I tried some of their coffee and thought it was great.  We hooked up, I went down to their headquarters and spent a day there just talking coffee, doing some tasting and I have to say, I felt like I was part of this coffee family.  Everyone there really enjoys the art of coffee, as do I, so this was something I was really interested in being a part of.  We worked together to come up with what I feel is a perfect cup of coffee, and I’m happy to say that my Benante’s Blend is under the umbrella of the Dark Matter coffee family.”

New England hardcore punks Slow Death have released their debut album Hate-Filled World via Corpse Flower Records.

The band is comprised of Randy Larsen, former bassist and singer for noise rockers Cable and Empty Flowers, drummer Matt Spearin of Disapperer, guitarist Jeremy Medeiros, and bassist Jesse Sherman.

In August of 2016, the band entered Dead Air Studios with Will Killingsworth (Vaccine, Orchid, Laceration, Ampere, Bucket Full Of Teeth) to track their first record which was recorded and mixed in just two days. Just as quickly as the record was recorded, Corpse Flower Records agreed to release the record as a one-sided 12″ with a screen-printed B-side created by renowned illustrator Mark Rudolph (Carcass, Coalesce, Battlecross etc.).

Boasting eight battering songs, clocking in at around eighteen minutes, Slow Deaths’s meticulous mix of old punk and hardcore blended with some early AmRep style noise rock is sure to catch the attention of heavy music fans young and old. Lyrically, the band centers its attention on old horror movies and serial killers, mixed with a sentiment of depression and frustration.

You can head over to Corpse Flower Records Bandcamp and stream the album in its entirety.

Wilderness Dream premiere “The Observer” via Decibel

Posted by longhairedpoet on Thursday, June 1, 2017 at 7:21 PM (PST)

Oakland blackened thrashers Wilderness Dream have premiered their song “The Observer” over at Decibel.

“The Observer” comes off of the band’s forthcoming EP Paralysis Rise out July 14 via Creator-Destructor Records.

Wilderness Dream guitarist/vocalist and label owner Ben Murray proclaims:

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to bring you the first single from our upcoming second EP! After some deliberation, we came to the consensus that ‘The Observer’ was the most violent, crushing preview of the tone of this record, and we hope that you all enjoy it! ‘The Observer’ is the closing track on Paralysis Rise, and definitely reveals the shift in our sound towards a darker, less melodic realm of the blackened thrash metal universe…Turn the lights down and turn that shit up!”

Wilderness Dream will be hitting California the first week of August, you can check out those tour dates and music from the band’s bandcamp here.

Honestly. whenever I see Byzantine news I get a little warm feeling of stoked-ness inside. I’m just glad they are finally getting their due more and are back in action so strongly. What a fuckin’ legit rad band.

For a first preview of new album The Cicada Tree, a new video for the single “New Ways to Bear Witness” (featuring a cameo by Skeletonwitch’s Dustin Boltjes, as well as ex-Byzantine drummer Matt Wolfe) has been launched online. Directed/edited by Holly Siders, the filming of “New Ways to Bear Witness” resulted in Chris “OJ” Ojeda (vocals, rhythm guitar) suffering a concussion. OJ comments about the experience:

“So, we came up with an idea of having our old drummer do a cameo appearance in the music video. Matt Wolfe left the band right before we signed with Metal Blade and had occupied the drum seat for the last 12 years. We felt it was a perfect opportunity to let fans know that we still love Matt and he’s still welcome and important to our band. What’s the best way to have an ousted band member make a cameo? To hit me with a vehicle, of course!
We set up the scene and did about 5 or 6 takes of Wolfe hitting me with the vehicle and me rolling off the vehicle. I didn’t know until we wrapped shooting the next day that something was wrong and had a very hard time driving home. I contacted an ER doctor friend of mine who told me I needed to come see him ASAP. After a CT Scan and an EKG, he let me know I had a standard sports type concussion from repeatedly hitting my head during the video shoot. I got 3 days off work and a cool story out of it! Rock!”

Check it out and purchase this bad bitch HERE.

Band Spotlight: Body Count

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Sunday, May 14, 2017 at 6:54 PM (PST)

Body Count are not our latest band spotlight because you don’t know who they are. Hell, they are infamous! How many rock bands still scare crusty old white people in 2017? Powerflo and Prophets Of Rage are helping bring actually good rap metal back, but Body Count hit the biggest grand slam of late with Bloodlust. The thrash act have been around since “Cop Killer” was the most controversial song in the world, but recently soared back to prominence in the metal scene with topical songs capturing current headlines. “Civil War”, “No Lives Matter” and the new album’s strongest cut “Black Hoodie” – paired with cameos from Dave Mustaine, Max Cavalera and Randy Blythe plus charismatic spoken intros from Ice-T – have secured the band respect well beyond a novelty status they never deserved. Bloodlust has been out a few months now and remains in heavy rotation for many of us.

“Bear The Cross” from Australia’s In Malice’s Wake will quite keenly thrash your head clear off your shoulders. The band have a sole mission and that is to thrash your soul. This video clip was a great find in our inbox this morning and a big “Hell to the yeah!” goes out to this band for starting out our weekend properly.

Australia? Are they going to call us poofters and try to fight us or something like Destroyer 666? We certainly hope not, because for now we are really enjoying the shit out of this and so will fans of Venom and Slayer to the max. We also feel very obliged to toast a great Australian metal effort when we hear it these days, especially in the wake of the idiocy of Donald Trump trying to make us at odds with Australia lately for zero fucking good reason.

Anyway, enjoy this onslaught! If you don’t know them, you really should!!!

After a strong finish on a series of tour dates across the UK and Central Europe alongside heavy-hitters’ Meshuggah and Arch Enemy respectively, Swedish thrash metallers’ THE HAUNTED have been busy completing the recording and mixing process of their upcoming, 9th studio album effort. Recorded at Parlour Studios in the UK with producer Russ Russell (Napalm Death, Dimmu Borgir, The Exploited), the album is entitled Strength In Numbers and will be released worldwide via Century Media Records on August 25, 2017.

THE HAUNTED‘s guitarist Ola Englund has checked in with the following comment:“Working on “Strength In Numbers” with Russ Russell as an engineer and producer has been an incredible experience. His attitude and positivity has helped us to truly do our best when recording. He’s just a killer guy to be around!”, before adding:“All the tracking for the album has been completed and Russ is right in the middle of mixing and mastering it. And from the early mixes I’ve heard, it’s shaping up to be insanely heavy. No clean singing, no banjo, no pickup trucks…so fans of country music are gonna hate it, haha! Seriously: Heads are gonna roll. In a good way…”

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Thursday, May 4, 2017 at 10:32 AM (PST)

Jason Bittner, a drummers drummer who is a scene vet and has of course played with bands like the much missed Shadows Fall, Flotsam and Jetsam and briefly with Crisis, has joined thrash titans Overkill. This is a pretty fucking insanely good fit as Jason’s style is going to synch up very well for the band.

Press release here:

Legendary New Jersey thrashers, OVERKILL, have kept the machine running strong in 2017 with the release of their highly-acclaimed eighteenth album, The Grinding Wheel, as well as adding another US tour under their belts. “OVERKILL would like to announce it’s newest member, behind the kit and steering the ship, Jason “Sticks” Bittner,” comments Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth. “We wholeheartedly would like to thank Eddy “The Mexicutioner” Garcia for holding down the ship and keeping the momentum up for the band over this past year plus. Eddy has and always will be part of the OVERKILL machine.
Jason is a long time friend of the band and his abilities have always spoke for themselves. Let the touring continue…onward-upward!”

Jason “Sticks” Bittner states, “When my phone rang about 2 months ago and Blitz said ‘Hey, me and DD are wondering if you would be interested in joining?’ It really didn’t take much for me to write back a one word answer………ABSOLUTELY! I am extremely excited to be a part, once again, of thrash metal history, and I can not wait to get out on the road and wreck stages across the world with the ‘Mean Green Killing Machine!'”
