India’s socially aware thrashers AGAINST EVIL have a new lyric video (with band footage as well) for anti propaganda song “End Of The Line”. It is the title track of their pending new album. Billy Sheehan is even on a tune.

Shasank (Rhythm, Lead Guitar) shares more details about the song: “This is the title song and also the heaviest song on the album! It’s about a dystopian future where common people have no rights and are trapped under the control of evil governments and shadow organizations. We also got the idea for the cover artwork after writing this song, where the band also known as The Army of Four are being sentenced to death by the electric chair for rebellion against the evil government. Overall, it’s a very aggressive heavy metal song with a good blend of thrash.” 

Seems timely when you think of how authoritarian governments are removing band’s entire digital work from streaming if they disagree.

The album End of the Line will be out May 14th via German/Swiss based record label Doc Gator Records in Europe and independently the rest of the world. The sound of Against Evil is best described as Heavy Metal with Power and Speed ​​Metal influence.

Hey there Megadeth and general thrash fanatics! Cool news today. I got to in a small way facilitate an introduction between Robert Bolger (longtime Nick Menza manager) and rocker/web designer Mark Aceves of the band ZED through my friend Lara Noel McGlynn who knew Mark. Long story short, here’s a website with a sneak preview of an upcoming Nick Menza documentary about the late, great thrash icon’s life!  Playing even a tiny, inconsequential part in this means a lot to me as Countdown… was very much one of the first records that got me into ‘heavier’ metal.

Screaming Butterfly Entertainment was founded by owner Holly Mollohan, who guides fans through the teaser clip.

Metallica rang in 35 (!) years of the iconic Master Of Puppets with a Colbert performance of “Battery”. The classic thrash song still packs quite a punch despite the band being older and you can feel the emotion in the performance. The banner from the Damage Inc. tour made the moment even more resonant as a subtle tribute to Cliff and a reminder of everywhere we have been with this band. In 2015, Master of Puppets became the first metal recording to be selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

Kirk’s soloing on “Battery” on Colbert also really makes me wonder again how in the hell the decision was ever made to keep solos off St. Anger. Personally I find that worse than the snare.

There likely may never be another metal band to reach this band’s heights and we would do well to keep celebrating their impact.

Perpetual Chaos continues to turn heads for thrashers Nervosa. While Fernanda Lira and Luana Dametto are missed, the new record slays and now we have multiple good bands instead of one (Crypta is fucking awesome). Diva Satanica is really doing an admirable job at what seemed impossible, much like Floor from Nightwish managing to carry on for an already respected institution.

Schmier from Destruction appears on the new single, “Genocidal Command” which has some clear Slayer influences from the opening scream.  Prika Amaral has done a great job ensuring the group stayed formidable despite the major line-up changes.

ANUBIS cover MEGADETH’s “Tornado Of Souls”

Cleopatra artist’s ANUBIS, a rising thrash force from  Los Angeles, have a new Megadeth cover out! Featuring veterans of local and national metal bands Hatchet, Screams of Syrens, and Hydera, ANUBIS “,…combines the speed and aggression of thrash metal bands like Megadeth, Testament, Havok with the twin guitar attack and soaring vocals of melodic metal like Helloween, Savatage, and Iron Maiden.”

This cover version is lean and sleek with the band clearly determined to showcase what they can do. While it is hard not to compare it to the iconic and meaner original, this version pops and leaps out of the speakers with a modern metallic commendable lifeforce.

We look forward to seeing what else this band has in store!

KREATOR to release ‘UNDER THE GUILLOTINE’ deluxe set

The story of Kreator’s meteoric rise to the global elite of thrash metal bands from their humble beginnings in Essen Germany, began under their first name of Tormentor in the early 80’s. It was their ‘Blitzkreig’ and ‘End Of The World’ demos changing hands in the era’s bustling underground tape-trading network that exposed them to the international metal community.  Positive word of mouth soon attracted the attention of Germany’s own metal start-up, Noise Records, which signed the newly re-christened Kreator to a deal.

Kreator’s tenure at the label spawned six studio albums and established them as one of the most influential on the thrash scene, one they dominate to this day.  1985 debut, Endless Pain was a savage debut; its crude thrashing quickly had the underground metal world abuzz with excitement. 1986’s Follow up, Pleasure To Kill is considered the band’s first “classic” album and raised the bar with more diversity of tempos, while losing nothing in terms of ferocity or speed. 1987’s Terrible Certainty further cemented the reputation that Kreator were one of the genre’s finest exponents.  In 1989 the band closed the decade with the thrash triumph of Extreme Aggression, their biggest seller to date.  1990’s huge magnum opus Coma Of Souls confirmed them in thrash history before they diversified their sound on the experimental, Renewal in 1992.

Under The Guillotine is a deluxe celebration of Kreator’s, Noise Records discography and is the definitive collection of their first decade of recorded work and contains :

METAL RIOT’S TOP 12 ALBUMS OF 2020 ‘BEST OF’ LIST

2020 has been quite a challenge -to say the least- for so many people. Unless you are a fat cat getting inexplicably bailed out or the Catholic Church getting relief money (even though they were only in debt from pedo lawsuit settlement payouts), chances are 2020 found you broke, lonely, thirsty and miserable, scared or mourning loved ones. Music was no stranger to this. We lost any certainty of what the future holds in an already difficult industry and even lost Neil Peart, fucking EVH and Riley Gale on top of everything else. But people also made great art that will stand the test of time, profound sacrifices and held fast, rallied for racial justice and so much more. It is an important time to be alive and just as beautiful as it can be painful! And there is still December ahead of us as of this writing. Hope against horror.

The following list of Metal Riot’s top albums of 2020 reflects records that capture excellence, performance, drive, willpower and survival in no uncertain terms. As well as killer tunes, of course! Kudos and thanks to all the bands.We usually post our list just after Thanksgiving but I am gonna be recording that week in the studio with Globelamp and Sean Paul from Nightmares For A Week, so…let’s get started ending the year earlier! Hey Decibel published theirs first, okay?!! Rock the fuck on, lovers and dreamers. Please buy all of these releases or whatever you dig. And remember, dear readers…I came up and so could you…And fuck the boys in blue.

1. ALBUM OF THE YEAR: SepulturaQuadra

Sepultura’s highest charting album since 1998 (and their best since 2009’s bruising A-Lex, which it surpasses) is nothing short of a monument to a lifetime in metal, the determined triumph of a legacy name never saying die and following their trusted vision over popular opinion. Quadra works on every level. In a year filled with so much death even the band’s name vibrates on some heavy karmic level, but “Isolation” especially resonates deeply in a time of so much social upheaval for justice reform. Each section of the album masterfully represents different styles the group has been known for from classic thrash to tribal groove to slower and grim anthems to technical workouts, but it all works incredibly well. From saving the environment to tackling depression and self destruction, Derrick commands stronger than ever while Eloy Casagrande stakes his claim as the most driven and insane drummer currently active in metal. Jens Bogren brought out the absolute best in this line-up. A+ all the way.

Throw in how during quarantine the band kept morale high across the metal world with interviews and killer jams during their SepulQuarta series with the likes of Scott Ian, Shavo Odadjian, Rob Cavestany and many more, and the band take the cake for our heroes of 2020.

2. Skeletal RemainsThe Entombment Of Chaos

There has been a lot of top notch death metal this year of different sub-genre varieties from Ingested to Necrot to God Dethroned to Abysmal Dawn and others. That said, Skeletal Remains ABSOLUTELY destroyed most of the competition with their latest near perfect death metal monstrosity The Entombment Of Chaos. From the thrilling horror of the Seagrave art to some of the most intense and odds defying music of the band’s tenure, this record offers relentless replay value. From the imposing violence of “Tombs Of Chaos” to the eerie “Enshrined In Agony” to the standout “Dissectasy”, the group have vaulted much closer to the top of the pack.

3. VÖLUR – Death Cult

Arguably the most creative album of 2020 – and with SUCH a timely album title – Death Cult is the intoxicating yet deadly sound of seductive decay and the will to escape empty indoctrination. Gorgeous violin based doom defies expectations at every turn and the band’s singular sense of purpose is thrilling. The Toronto band’s third album is a must hear and will likely cause even the most necessity hardened hearts in 2020 to break into smoldering halves.

Thankfully no one is touring this year anyway cuz this vehicle looks suspect

4. Soft KillDead Kids, R.I.P. City

Bestial Mouths, Nothing, Ulver and other brave sailors on the seas of sorrow all released truly killer records in 2020 that rank among their best ever, but Soft Kill’s newest is my favorite simultaneously spooky yet painfully real and poetic release of this fucked hellhole of a year. A reminder that even at the lowest low people are still out there worth celebrating and fighting for. A testament to loss, love and possibility in art and community. This band has yet to let me down and their catalogue got me through a lot of depression this year when I was both determined to stay sober but also was reeling from narrowly avoiding a diabetic coma and going into serious medical debt. So glad I snagged this on limited tape release already!

5. BlackguardStorm

The Chinese Democracy of extreme epic metal albums was released very early in January of one of the most fucked up years in human history and it would be a damn shame if it didn’t get more accolades in the madcap shuffle, especially since we have all lived through quite a fucking ‘storm’ together this year. In limbo for about seven years, you’d never believe this exciting and possibly the most ferocious album of 2020 was recorded by a band burnt out by relentless touring. Storm finds the Canadian underground warriors delivering frenetic and death defying performances, their best songwriting plus cameos from Lindsay Schoolcraft, Morgan Lander and Per fucking Nilsson ! Unleash The Archers, Germany’s Varg and Ensiferum all delivered some exemplary epic records in 2020, but Blackguard’s potential swan song was above the pack and well worth one of the most frustrating waits in metal history. I am beside myself with joy and hails that it finally saw the light of a bleary day.

6. UprisingII

“A Lesson in basic human Empathy” has my favorite lyrics of 2020 (I mean, besides “High Road” by Kesha) and even more wonderful that it comes from a black metal project, a genre often known for apathy and heartless cruelty.

Judgment based on action not on colour, race or sex no harming of sentient beings but respecting life help where help is needed No condemnation of the innocent take responsibility for your wealth that is built on the backs of others

Talk about something we sorely needed this year! And lest you think I am only swayed by lefty ideology to get on this list, the album features many of the best riffs and arrangements and startlingly emotional playing of the year. This album is a refuge and a reminder that work still needs to be done.

 

7. -(16)- – Dream Squasher

It says something about 2020 that several albums – Bleakheart’s also brilliant and gothy Dream Griever comes to mind – had titles that reflected the thwarting of dreams. “Ride The Waves” is about as perfect a punk metal mash as you’ll ever here. Dropping like a piano from a skyscraper onto our heads during the mid point of 2020 when things couldn’t seem bleaker, veteran sludge band -(16)- delivered the most clobbering album of recent memory. There is also the best anthem to loving your dog since Wisdom In Chains penned “Girls Lie, Cops Lie, Dogs Love”. And we all dealt with some ‘harvesters of fabrication’ this year. Bobby Ferry is a champion on this album, which crushed everything else Relapse (and most other labels) released this year.

8. Spirit Adrift – Enlightened In Eternity

Speaking of dogs, epic metal pitties (we have to stan)! This has to be the best album cover maybe…ever? Nathan Garrett makes us all proud to be metalheads yet again with another brilliant album from the guy in metal who possibly plays with the most heart. “Ride into the Light” is the best Snakes For The Divine song High On Fire never wrote and “if we make it through the night we will ride into the light” is major 2020 vibes. COC influences abound, while “Screaming From Beyond” reveres classic metal through and through and yet feels current and connective to this moment. “Stronger Than Your Pain” is my favorite of the bunch, a pressing reminder to keep heart as hypnotic and melodic riffage brings to the forefont a will to carry on from the murk of doubts.

9. Oceans Of SlumberS/T 

Cammie Gilbert gave the best vocal performance in all of metal throughout the jaw dropping self-titled Oceans Of Slumber release (don’t even get me started on how good the band’s arguably best ever Type O Negative cover of “Wolf Moon” is). Oceans Of Slumber is a self-titled album that lives up to the underscored nature of self-titled albums, which can run the risk of not living up to the hype but in this case leaps galaxies to defy even the loftiest expectations. This is not just ‘prog metal’ that is annoyingly obtuse for the sake of being brainy. This is a soulful and heavy merger of so many genres into a seamless whole that it is a world unto itself yet full of the very best connective tissue to deeper realizations that make the human experience worth living.

10. DrainCalifornia Cursed 

Santa Cruz hardcore band Drain supplied the illest crossover record of 2020 (even stacked up with the also amazing Mr. Bungle frantic freak thrash record). Revelation Records did the world a big favor in backing this band, one of the most high energy groups in hardcore right now. It is almost impossible to turn this off before listening all the way through or at the very least flipping over a table.

11. Vile Creature – Glory, Glory! Apathy Took Helm!

Much like Canada’s Wolverine, doom duo Vile Creature keep unwittingly revealing they are the best there is at what they do. Everything about this release is amazing, from the most ambitious and full payoff compositions of the group’s career, to the support they are getting (well deserved) in the scene, to the already basically iconic art. The 3rd pressing is even on trans flag colored vinyl. Adam Tucker’s mix and master sounds better than anything they have released to date and really brings all their brilliance to the forefront without killing the furrowed brow vibes. The doom and gloom also has celestial level vibes on this record that add some very unique listening textures and feel larger than life, a friction of glory and gore.

12.  SkeletonS/T

It is fitting to include a Texas based punk/metal hybrid band on here in closing in a year where the loss of Riley from Power Trip brought huge attention to the impact the Lone Star state has had on the modern scene. By far the nastiest and filthiest riffs of the year (Worm Moon Offerings a close second), this record is in the Bane Give Blood and Slayer Reign In Blood tradition of blink and you’ll miss it, all killer/ no filler, wham bam thank you, etc. over and done leave ’em scorched and wanting more albums. Super stoked to see where this band goes in the future. Then you also have a song like “Catacombs” with some brief atmospheric intro perfection before the proceedings battle to a fiery finale.

VOIVOD release “Iconspiracy” single

Canadian progressive sci-fi metal innovators VOIVOD are returning with a much overdue new live release entitled Lost Machine – Live. The album was recorded in Québec City during the worldwide touring cycle for the band’s latest studio album The Wake and will be released worldwide on November 27th, 2020 via Century Media Records.

 

To celebrate the forthcoming release, the band have dropped their second single off the live album today. Watch the video for “Iconspiracy HERE.

 

And now, ‘Iconspiracy’, the second single/video from our upcoming release ‘Lost Machine – Live’. Like the video for the first single ‘The Lost Machine’, the footage comes from the Montréal Jazz Fest 2019 and the audio is from the Québec City Summer Fest 2019, where the entire live album was recorded. ‘Iconspiracy’ has become one of our favorite songs to perform on tour since the album ‘The Wake’ came out in 2018. The video direction is by Felipe Belalcazar and my art was animated by Jaan Silmberg. There are a lot more projects in the works. Meanwhile, have fun with this one,” states VOIVOD drummer Michel “Away” Langevin.

Death/thrash outfit RAIDER, hailing from Waterloo, Canada unleashed their debut album Guardian of The Fire this past March. The eight-track LP is a rush of E-standard mayhem, thrash overtones, and blackened vocals. Lyrically, the album’s theme revolves around overcoming lies and hatred that stand between all of us and the truth.

Fans of bands of Sepultura, Annihilator, and Skeletonwitch, RAIDER is one of the underground death/thrash bands to keep an eye on in 2020 as they continue to raise hell in the moshpit.

Today the band shares their latest music video No Sign of The Dawn”, a groovy thrash attack about the cost of taking our world for granted. It’s a reflection on getting human priorities straight.

The band adds:

“Our world stands on the edge of a knife. The virus is but another horseman in the ever-growing mountain of omens. We often get distracted and seem to forget that we are still on our way to one of many total deliverances. We have to unite, think, and speak for ourselves or we will be spoken for. If we do not choose the path that leads us to a better future, we will be forced down a path to ruin, of which there are many, and each of their songs remains the same: For the mortal world there is no sign of the dawn.”

The old school vibe is paired with impressively tight musicianship on an almost impossible level. New album The Truth Behind the Lies is set for international release on October 23rd via Metalville Records. Featuring footage from the band’s Bloodstock Open Air appearance and the working sketches of the album artwork. Loving Richard Sherrington’s hoarse and bitter vocals on this one!

Sepultura‘s fearless and ferocious Quadra is one of their most cohesive and stunning musical achievements yet in the band’s long legacy. The album is the band’s most successful record since 1998’s Against, charting in 17 countries and entering the top 20 in 7 countries (8, considering the UK Rock Charts). It is also their most successful album in Germany and Switzerland to date, exceeding the chart positions of Roots, with positions number 5 and number 13, respectively.

From Andreas and Eloy masterfully building up anticipation in the intro to the massive heavy sections screaming for awareness, “Guardians Of Earth” is yet another reason this album is so timely. Watch the gorgeous and moving video below.

RIP Riley Gale of Power Trip

Riley Gale of Power Trip, arguably the fastest rising band in metal and hardcore in recent memory, has died. The metal and punk community are devastated but it is nice to see so many people coming together to honor and mourn a truly great frontman. Rest In Power Riley was trending on Twitter over some really evil stuff, so it is cool to see good can win sometimes even at a sad fucking moment. Love rises and hardcore can be family still.

I remember being at the Warzone tribute in the Lower East Side a few years ago and ‘Executioner’s Tax’ was maybe the only newer song I heard played over the PA that day along with classic punk and KRS-One and stuff. I remember people were just vibin’ so hard to the Power Trip and I knew they were the great top new thrash band of this era. Major love and condolences to all who are affected by this terrible loss. – MYE.

RIP Tony Costanza (Machine Head, Crisis, Crowbar, etc)

This week the metal world had to sadly say goodbye to drummer Tony Costanza, age 52. Tony was in Papsmear (vocals), Machine Head (original drummer), Crisis (drums) and Crowbar (drums). Costanza died in his sleep, as confirmed by Afzaal Nasiruddeen, a former bandmate in the New York metal group Crisis and a valued friend of mine. Our hearts go out to everyone who knew Tony and please support this GoFundMe to help his loves ones with this funeral burden during a hard time.

I didn’t know how much Tony was loved the world over until I posted about his passing on Facebook yesterday.The outpouring of support over Tony’s passing yesterday, has been overwhelming and I thank everyone in our musical community from the bottom of my heart. Tony would have loved all the attention, although he only ever wanted validation and appreciation for his musical talent and lifelong commitment to heavy music. Like all of us in the underground, he loved the camaraderie and brotherhood that our scene offered. In this department, Tony excelled and was the best friend one could ever ask for. Loyal to a fault and a warrior till the end. I am proud to admit that I fought shoulder to shoulder with him, literally and metaphorically, in our struggle to be heard representing the extreme music fringe in America. Our metal, punk and hardcore underground is uniquely talented and most of us will never get the credit that we deserve in our lifetime. Tony is a shining example of this highly underrated drummer that never got the kudos, like so many great musicians I know. So In closing I will say this: the music speaks for itself and will live on no matter what anyone has to say about it. I hope you are at peace now Tony. I will miss your love, honesty and loyalty till the end of my days. See you on the other side my brother. – Afzaal

Band Spotlight: Warbringer

California thrash upstarts Warbringer have returned to settle the score and cement their long term legacy fully with sixth album Weapons of Tomorrow. “Firepower Kills” probably ought to open all their future shows, just a complete stage setter for chaos. “Crushed Beneath The Tracks” and “Power Unsurpassed” in particular show this band would have ruled 1988 with ease and contain maximum neck injuring/ fist pumping potential (along with notable Slayer-worthy wraith shrieking). I am not 100% on the semi-thin snare sound but it hardly distracts the band’s performances are all monstrous on this bad boy. Exodus, Annihilator fans or of course fans of more new school speed thrash bands should get all over this one. \m/

On August 21, 2020, 30 years to the day after its initial launch, thrash/metal-masters Anthrax will celebrate with the release of the deluxe anniversary edition of their fifth studio album, the Gold-certified Persistence of Time, produced by Anthrax and Mark Dodson (Megaforce). Available exclusively on disc and vinyl, the CD package will include two CDs and one DVD, the vinyl edition offers four LPs, as well as revised cover art that reflects what had been the album’s original visual concept. Pre-orders can be placed HERE.

As with Anthrax’s previous anniversary deluxe editions, the band’s Charlie Benante shepherded the one for Persistence of Time. Disc One is comprised of the 11-track album, fully-remastered by Paul Logus (who mastered Anthrax’s Worship Music and For All Kings. the Anthems EP, and the DVDs “Kings Among Scotland” and “Chile on Hell”). Disc One also features a special “bonus B-side” version of “I’m The Man” from 1990 that leans more hip-hop than rock, and a live version of “Time” that was recorded at Michigan’s Palace of Auburn Hills in 1991. The final two songs on Disc One, as well as all nine tracks on Disc Two, are special recordings from “Charlie’s Stash,” an incomparable wealth of Anthrax music from the band’s rehearsals, writing sessions, preproduction, and live performances that Benante has recorded over the past 40 years and has been kept safely filed away. These recordings will put listeners “in the room” with the band, privy to the evolution of the songs on Persistence of Time starting with Benante’s original riffs and demos for the songs, moving on to Frank Bello, Scott Ian, Joey Belladonna, Dan Spitz, and Benante shaping the songs in rehearsal, then into preproduction, and finally into the recording studio. Said Benante, “you’ll hear parts of songs that never made it to the final recording or songs with an arrangement different from the finished song.”
