Slayer announce final world tour

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Monday, January 22, 2018 at 12:22 PM (PST)

I guess it had to happen someday. Slayer, arguably the best extreme live thrash band of all time, are calling it a day. I have so many insane memories of seeing them live, from Roseland with Fear Factory and Kilgore to at Mayhem with Slipknot to the Mid Hudson Civic Center to touring with Megadeth on the American Carnage tour to a bunch of other times. There just is nothing quite like seeing the band drop into the bridge of “War Ensemble” live and I doubt there ever will be again.

I liked Repentless and hoped they would have one more in them before a curtain call, but you’d be criminally insane to not believe they have had a historic run to rival nearly any band in metal or any genre. Hails, dudes. Kinda sad to see you guys go before the Kardashians.

Band Spotlight: Exhorder

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at 5:08 PM (PST)

Exhorder have returned to thrash once more. The newest band lineup features founding members Vinnie LaBella (guitar) and Kyle Thomas (vocals) along with Jason Viebrooks (HEATHEN) on bass, Marzi Montazeri (ex-SUPERJOINT RITUAL, PHILIP H. ANSELMO & THE ILLEGALS) on guitar and Sasha Horn (FORBIDDEN) on drums.

If you have ever enjoyed albums by bands like Pantera or Byzantine and somehow don’t know Exhorder,  you ought to go do some catch up homework. While you are at it check out Kyle’s time in Alabama Thunderpussy as well, cuz that was also awesome.

The band will perform Slaughter In The Vatican, and sophomore album, The Law, in their entirety on Friday, February 9 and Saturday, February 10, respectively, at the St. Vitus Bar in Brooklyn, New York. Additionally they play a sure to be off the walls homecoming show in New Orleans at Southport Hall on February 12.

Exhorder have signed a worldwide management deal with All Independent Service Alliance (AISA) .

Gwar’s Mike Derks needs our help.

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Thursday, October 26, 2017 at 11:47 AM (PST)

News broke today that Gwar’s Mike Derks is battling a bone marrow disorder. Balsac the Jaws of Death is a hero to many, the riff spewing glue that holds Gwar together. Let’s hope the metal and punk community will come together and try and help Mike. Gwar have certainly been through enough the last few years!

Song Of The Week: “Of Blackened Wing” by WITCHERY

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at 7:08 PM (PST)

The newest single from WITCHERY is here. It is taken from I Am Legion,  due out on November 10, 2017 via CENTURY MEDIA RECORDS. Some dark death march sections pair very well with the faster thrashing moments for a fully on fire listen.

WITCHERY guitarist Jensen checked in with the following comment about “Of Blackened Wing”: “’Of Blackened Wing’ is a song that perfectly combines both the old and new sounds of WITCHERY. It mixes the thrashing touch of old with the grittiness and rawness of new. It’s one of my personal favorites on the “I Am Legion” album and it will definitely be a part of our set for our upcoming live shows.

Check out “Of Blackened Wing” in a video by Martin Hultgren (Gryt Film) streaming below.

You can also stream the single when you pre-order “I Am Legion” at: http://smarturl.it/WITCHERY-IAmLegion

Savage Messiah launch “Wing and a Prayer” video

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Monday, October 9, 2017 at 10:27 AM (PST)

British heavy metal act, SAVAGE MESSIAH, have just released a video for their brand new single, “Wing And A Prayer”, which is taken off their upcoming album, Hands Of Fate!

Frontman David Silver comments: “This is a powerful snapshot of our upcoming album, loud and anthemic! With my favourite guitar solo yet. We’ve had this song in our set for the past few shows and have been really taken aback at how ‘instant’ the song has been, and how well fans have reacted to it, so we’re really excited to share this video for all of you.”

Metal Church at The Chance. 9/19/17 (Show Review)

Posted by Andrew Johann Datoush on Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at 1:51 PM (PST)

My family always wanted me to attend church a little bit more, so when I saw METAL CHURCH on the Chance website, I knew I had to go. It’s what my family wanted. Probably God too, and who am I to argue?

It’s been said that METAL CHURCH is the only church. Good enough if you ask me.

The date was September 9th, 2017, and the congregation huddled outside in the unseasonably chilly air outside The Chance Theater in Poughkeepsie, NY as we awaited our heroes, METAL CHURCH to arrive for the show, which also doubled as a party for Chris Caffery’s birthday. The cold air, the crack head trying to sell a fake “front row” ticket to the show, and the fact that the venue didn’t let anyone into the building for nearly an hour past the door time wasn’t enough to deter any of us. In fact, the “front row” ticket was the joke of the night for many of us as we yelled out in between songs “I got front row!” (the entire front of the stage is GA).

Band Spotlight: Artillery

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Monday, September 18, 2017 at 1:44 PM (PST)

You gotta have respect for Artillery.

The veteran Danish power thrashers have just released a new video for the song “When The Magic Is Gone”, taken off the band’s latest album, Penalty By Perception. To watch the video, please visit HERE.

Artillery comments: “Our new video ‘When The Magic Is Gone’ is a song about death and grief, it is a very personal song which shows the more mellow side of Artillery. The video was recorded in Norrebro, Copenhagen by Terkel Christensen (Aggressive Art) who is an old friend of Artillery.”

On Sept. 23rd, Artillery will start their co-headline tour with Onslaught. Artillery will celebrate the 30th Anniversary of their Terror Squad album on this run, playing 5-6 songs from that album, plus new songs from their latest album Penalty By Perception, as well as some more classics. See HERE for dates.

Album Review: Shrapnel – ‘Raised On Decay’

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at 9:05 PM (PST)

Daaaamn. Shrapnel are back! Raised On Decay (Spinefarm) is a big next step for the British thrashers after a good, if flawed, debut The Virus Conspires. You can tell they have been working hard because the new record increases all of their strengths and you can hear the band finding their own voice a little more. They were never bad but they are becoming who they were meant to be. You can hear it in the explosive 2:28 mark of “Echoes Of Emptiness” as they transcend the confines of an otherwise rad thrash song into full guitar solo glory and then a truly unhinged bridge that will satisfy Death Angel and Kreator fans alike and proves they can match the intensity of Warbringer and Battlecross when they assert themselves fully.

There is a lot of bad ass riffing here. “Jester” doesn’t even have to demand your attention because it has it. A hard charged riff slips into a super bad ass extended tom roll section and then we are off to the fuckin’ races. You can tell these guys are deeply invested in the music and set to prove they deserve the big time. Man, they need to be on the road with Testament or Shattered Sun like RIGHT now!

“Choir Of Wolves” is an example of a slightly weaker cut, though the song title is cool. An almost Queensryche intro with evil sort of bordeline campy King Diamond dark talking vocals (might have been better instrumental, frankly) sets the stage for a very militaristic sounding song that has some clobbering tones and great moments but is mostly held together by the stomp tempo and the great lead guitar. Other songs are more on point all the way through, in particular thrash fans will fucking delight (there is no other word) to the speed and skill excess of “Carved From Above”.

I dug this band when I first heard them and highly recommend this for a band who you feel like you can sort of be a part of from the ground floor up. I sincerely hope they stay going and make a handful more records after this, cuz they are really having an extended musical moment of greatness here for the vast majority of the offered tracks.

Enter to win a Kerry King B.C. Rich guitar

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Thursday, September 7, 2017 at 3:59 PM (PST)

“The Breakdown,” a brand new, long-form video interview with Slayer‘s Kerry King, premieres today exclusively at AltPress.com.  Go HERE to check it out.

Produced by B.C. Rich, who endorses King, “The Breakdown” has a very candid King talking about his guitars, how he came to start playing the guitar, guitar heroes of his and for the generation of up-and-coming guitar players, being a fan and having that get in the way of “friending” some of his heroes, his friendships with Dimebag and Zakk Wylde, what he misses the most about Jeff Hanneman, and much more.

“I didn’t want to play guitar,” King reveals in the interview.  “My dad gave me a handful of things to keep me out of trouble when I was thirteen, the guitar was one of them and I think that karate was another.  I didn’t feel like getting my ass kicked every day, so this guitar thing sounds pretty awesome.”

In addition to the interview, AltPress.com has teamed up with B.C. Rich to give away one brand new Kerry King Signature guitar, the KKW30 model, with its unmistakable Kerry King styling and graphics.  Those interested in entering the sweepstakes should go HERE.

“It seems like the last ten, fifteen years isn’t throwing out new guitar heroes, which is unfortunate but I think that’s because the bands people like don’t have guitar heroes in them,” King says in “The Breakdown.”  “It’s discouraging, but I don’t think that should discourage people from becoming that next guitar god.”

Witchery to return with “I Am Legion” album, release new video

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Friday, September 1, 2017 at 1:51 PM (PST)

Witchery knocked it out of the park with In His Infernal Majesty’s Service and now seem to have really gotten their devilish groove back after the long half decade gap between Witchkrieg and that album. IHIMS really should have made our staff year end best of list last year but thankfully we were hacked and lost a ton of site content so now you can’t see how we screwed up and didn’t include it. “Nosferatu” jams so gosh dang hard, we really screwed up.

We have another chance! Witchery are back already with a Century Media follow-up and are once again crushing it with the current band roster. The Swedes of charred thrash and gnarled emotional thickets shall drop I Am Legion in early November. Toxine/Legion/Emperor who?!! Angus Norder is turning out to be a real keeper (we hope)! Norder is joined again by Jensen (Guitar), Rickard Rimfält (Lead Guitar), Sharlee D’Angelo (Bass) and Chris Barkensjö (Drums). The album was produced and mixed by Daniel Bergstrand at Dugout Studios (Behemoth, In Flames, Meshuggah) and comes packaged in powerful artwork completed by Andreas Diaz Pettersson (as seen above).

Check out first taste “True North” (not a Bad Religion cover, though that would have been wild) below! Frozen wastes! Snarling! Evil!

Savage Messiah sign with Century Media Records

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at 7:54 PM (PST)

Metal Riot dutiful readers might remember the incredibly good Savage Messiah from an interview we did with them in 2014. The UK band will release a new album October 27th, 2017 as a late year entry into cool records this year, as if year end lists didn’t already have enough to contend with!! Ha, but all seriousness this band is killer and the good folks at Century Media were wise to scoop them up for their 4th album. The record is called Hands Of Fate.

I was supposed to see mighty black metallers Marduk tonight and my ride bailed at the last minute so I have been home stewing and drinking lemon tea all night, but this news makes me cheer up a bit. I love seeing hard working metal bands survive and grow. Metal is one of the coolest genres because fans are so real that it is possible with elbow grease and support to keep going if this music is your passion. Much respect to Savage Messiah!

Recorded at Rockfield Studios Monmouth (Black Sabbath, Rush, Queen), Hands Of Fate was produced by Scott Atkins (Cradle of Filth) and mastered by Dave Collins (Metallica, Soundgarden, Linkin Park). The cover art, as seen above, was completed by Travis Smith (Avenged Sevenfold, Opeth).

Title track “Hands Of Fate” is also available as a digital single on all streaming and download platforms along with being offered as an Instant Grat track on iTunes and Amazon. Love the intro to this one. Reminds me of good Megadeth/Metallica for sure with def a little “Enter Sandman” vibe.

Gwar release “Fuck This Place” official track, album details

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at 7:30 PM (PST)

I have seen Gwar live more than any other band in my life (Melvins and Clutch run a close second and third). Some of my favorite memories include Oderus giving me a thumbs up as I faux-masturbated while crowd surfing during a show while the Scumdog billionaires performed their pretty much worst song “Sammy” or screaming along to “Horror Of Yig” until my throat was raw and my face was as orange from fake blood as Conald Trump’s is from spray tanning with Pam cooking spray before a good Putin nut gargle. What I am trying to say is, I am qualified to say as a very OG human filth that Gwar is still good.

I never thought I would be able to support the band without Oderus, one of the all time greatest and most original, fun and awesome voices in metal. Blothar, however, has done a fine job keeping the alien quest for dominance alive. They basically just sound like “I Hate Love Songs” and “Crush, Kill, Destroy” are every song now, which is a far better solution than if Oderus was replaced by someone with no past affiliation.

Now, the time has come…your Lords and Masters GWAR have unveiled the details of The Blood Of Gods. Today the first single “Fuck This Place” is available for audio and video streaming. Watch the video, check out the song and pre-order your copy of “The Blood of Gods” at metalblade.com/gwar! Your Intergalactic Overlords demand it! Digital pre-orders include an instant gratification download of “Fuck This Place”. Limited edition special bundle packs are available for pre-order as well.

The Blood of Gods“, produced, recorded, mixed and mastered by Ronan Chris “Lord God” Murphy, will be released October 20th via Metal Blade Records. The album will be available in Standard CD, 2LP Colored Vinyl and Digital formats.
