Posted by JDKleinhans on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at 11:43 PM (PST)

A good new year to you, my fellow heathens, JD here with the list of the “Top Ten” metal albums of 2011.

I was hoping to have this list out before the end of 2011, but good lord… Not only was it a phenomenal year for metal but for music as a whole and narrowing it all down to a “Top Ten” list sucks! With that said, we’re here to keep it 100% Metal Riot.

Seeing how you heathens enjoy commenting on our picks for our Cover Art contests, I am thoroughly looking forward to the shredding I’m sure to receive for my “Top Ten” picks. So, take a wander through THE LIST and please, leave a comment.

Starting today, fans can check out the new Amon Amarth music video for the track “Destroyer of the Universe” off the band’s latest release “Surtur Rising“. The live video, which is premiering exclusively on BlankTV, was shot on the band’s May 6th stop in Philadelphia, PA at the Theatre Of Living Arts by director David Brodsky of MyGoodEye (The Black Dahlia Murder, The Devin Townsend Project, Suicide Silence, Municipal Waste, Whitechapel, etc).

“This time around we wanted to catch the energy and atmosphere of a live show, so we simply went for a live video. We look forward to get back to North America in August to continue and fulfill the ‘Evening’ tour, meanwhile enjoy the video.” comments guitarist Olavi Mikkonen.

Amon Amarth to Return to North America This Summer!

Posted by BlairWaterous on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 10:09 AM (PST)

Swedish melodic death metallers, Amon Amarth, are set to return to North America. Following up a hugely successful U.S. headlining tour that found the band touring without support and instead performing two separate sets each night, melodic death metal legends Amon Amarth will return to North America for the second leg of the “An Evening With Amon Amarth” tour.

Scheduled to kick off in Vancouver on August 4th, the trek will ravage its way through 22 cities, including several Canadian venues, and come to a close in Boise on September 3rd. The first set will again feature the band performing the recently-released, critically-acclaimed “Surtur Rising” album in its entirety while the second will offer up mixed bag of tunes from their extensive catalog of Norse-inspired awesomeness.

Commented the band in a collective statement: “Yes, it is true! We are coming back to tour North America. The Spring tour turned out to be so successful, and we had such a great time playing the double sets each night, that we decided to bring “An evening With Amon Amarth” to the rest of the continent, including Canada! We will perform the new album in its entirety, and after that we’re doing a revised second set with all the classics as well as some ‘wild-cards.'”

BlankTV sat down for some brutal Norse discourse and learned the secrets of Swedish melodic death metal Vikings Amon Amarth as they rapped with guitarist Olavi Mikkonen about their “Surtur Rising” tour, the 70,000 Tons of Metal Cruise, learn some lewd Swedish sayings, and Amon Amarth’s very own beer, Ragnarök Porter from Three Floyds Brewing (which the band and fans had the pleasure of having on tap at the April 14th Chicago show). Check out the video and Ragnarök Porter label here.

Amon Amarth is in the middle of their “An Evening With Amon Amarth” U.S. tour and will be starting their European tour on May 13th in Oslo, Norway with openers Black Dahlia Murder and Evocation. “Surtur Rising” is the band’s eighth full-length studio album and debuted at #34 on the Billboard Top 200.

Album Review: Amon Amarth – “Surtur Rising”

Posted by JDKleinhans on Monday, March 28, 2011 at 10:04 AM (PST)

From the deep vaults of the Poetic Edda and Prose Edda, from which they draw inspiration, Amon Amarth reminds us that they just don’t just speak of gods and of Vikings, but that they are true modern-day Vikings and  are mighty deities in the realm of what I call Metallum Gravis – the realm of Heavy Metal where only the majestic and mighty have reservation. Known for their thematic imagery and identifiable signature sound, Amon Amarth is a band beyond the shtick and gimmicks that many associate with such lyrical themes etched from Norse mythos. For the past 19 years, they have forged ahead, staying true to who and what they are, always striving to perfect their sound and vision with each album.  Some have called them boring or redundant, but (as Ted Lundström attests to) they have strived to achieve a perfected sound and to evolve slowly in their path in achieving it. “Surtur Rising” is another perfect step in that direction. This latest studio venture captures various elements from previous releases (the analog sound of “Fate of Norns”, the brutality of “With Oden on Our Side”, and the epic riffs of “Twilight of the Thunder God”), binding them in the fires of Múspellsheimr to create what is arguably their best production to date.

MR Exclusive Interview: Amon Amarth Discuss New Album and Tour

Posted by JDKleinhans on Thursday, March 17, 2011 at 1:32 PM (PST)

Sweden’s Amon Amarth have been pillaging the world with their uniquely identifiable melodic death metal sound since 1992. After 2008’s “Twilight of the Thunder God” debuted at number 50 on the Billboard 200, Amon Amarth is ready to pillage the world once again with their eighth full-length studio album “Surtur Rising”, set to release on March 29th via Metal Blade Records. To refer to their sound as viking metal is to do them an injustice, as they have been able to successfully forge their own style from the bloodied iron of viking and Norse mythology for going on two decades.

On their latest ride they bring you Surtur, fire demon and ruler of Muspelheim (the fire lands), the oldest being in the nine worlds. He is fated to be the last being in the universe when he takes his sword Twilight and lights it in the Eternal Flame thus given the power to raze the nine worlds.

Metal Riot was able to sit down with Amon Amarth founding member and bassist Ted Lundström and talk about the upcoming album and tour. Check it out here.

Amon Amarth Upcoming Album “Surtur Rising” Track-by-Track Review.

Posted by JDKleinhans on Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at 9:28 AM (PST)

Sweden’s death metal Vikings Amon Amarth have talked to the crew over at RadioMetal.com and reviewed their upcoming album “Surtur Rising” track-by-glorious-track. So what’s the verdict? Here’s what RadioMetal had to say:

“The media were expecting this Surtur Rising with about as much impatience as the fans. The question was whether Amon Amarth was going to deliver as good an album as the fantastic Twilight Of The Thunder God, which was unusually crammed with hits. The answer is simple – it’s a yes! The particularly careful production leaves nothing to chance, and there’s quality to spare in these compositions. This album is also more contrasted, more bombastic and more brutal than its predecessor. In short, an excellent sequel, which is cause for rejoicing. However, here’s to hoping the band won’t fall into a kind of routine. Two albums in the same vein? That’s just fine. Three? Not so much…”

Don’t forget to click here for a quick view of the track list, dates for their upcoming US tour, and the release teaser video which gives you a preview of the opening track “War of the Gods”.
