RIP Elijah Nelson of Black Breath

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Monday, December 30, 2019 at 12:36 PM (PST)

Very sad to learn of the sudden passing of Elijah Nelson of death metal band Black Breath. Was lucky enough to catch them live once and have them fully melt my face and the Elijah was a huge part of that and will be greatly missed by fans and loved ones. The group certainly are deserving of their cult following and regardless of all that it is always tragic when this sort of thing happens. Sending love out to everyone. Blasting some “Children of The Horn” right now.

Frogg share “Ancient Rain” guitar playthrough

Posted by longhairedpoet on Sunday, December 29, 2019 at 12:48 PM (PST)

For fans of Obscura, Arsis, Born of Osiris, Kalmah, The Zenith Passage

Technical metallers Frogg has shared a guitar playthrough for their track “Ancient Rain.”

“Ancient Rain” is a track off the upcoming debut EP A Reptilian Dystopia due out on January 17.

Frogg has been in the works for years in the mind of Sky Moon Clark and over the years he has been inoculating a stash of riffs, licks, and raw emotion, which will now be poured out into the world. As the band puts it, “it’s a fiery punch to the gut.”

Clark adds:

“Our EP is kind of our raw sound put on a plate without much refinement, but it’s still the basic punch and flavor Frogg has to offer. Just think of the EP as our base, while our in-the-works Album I (expected 2021/2022) will be a more fleshed-out form of Frogg with an emphasized focus on the overall songs start to finish.”

Check out the playthrough for “Ancient Rain” here.

Montecharge streaming ‘Demons Or Someone Else’

Posted by longhairedpoet on Sunday, December 29, 2019 at 12:00 PM (PST)

Swiss metallers Montecharge are streaming their first full-length album Demons Or Someone Else now over at their Bandcamp.

Montecharge is ffo: Cortez, Converge, Knut, Old Man Gloom, Gorguts

Montecharge emerged in 2007 as a reunion between two members of Amok, a defunct grind/death outfit from Geneva, Switzerland. They rapidly wrote their first tracks with the intent to deliver aggressive music while aiming for a form of subtlety.

As a side-project, the band initially remained a guitar/drum duo. They self-produced a 5-track EP in 2012, which was released as a 10’’ vinyl limited to 100 copies. In 2013, Montecharge expanded to include a third member in order to reinforce its experimental inclinations with synthesizers, Theremin and various noise machines.

The trio then recorded three tracks in studio to answer the call of a Swedish multi-band project named Elemental Nightmares. One track was published on the compilation and two were released on a 7’’ with Hummus Records. After a second hiatus due to implications in other projects the band regrouped in 2016 with renewed strength to write their first album and search for a vocalist.

Both of which came to fruition early 2017: Montecharge took on the studio as a quartet tor ecord an album with Thierry Van Osselt (of Knut fame) in Geneva.

Pleased to report that there is still more metal and hardcore content to throw your way as we head towards the end of this insane decade. Our new contributing photographer Petra Dollet shot legends Obituary, the hungry False Prophet, respected ragers Extinction AD and the wild High Command for us at the quite recent Palladium Upstairs night of the run and here is a gallery of hate splattered visual impressions for you die-hards RIGHT HERE. Looks like it was an awesome night of heavy antics!

Top 5 2019 Critical List : Jessica Rae Fisher

Posted by Metal Riot on Monday, December 16, 2019 at 11:20 AM (PST)

Jessica Rae Fisher

The following is the personal list of year end album top 5 favorites from frequent yearly Metal Riot contributor Jessica Rae Fisher, aka Longhairedpoet. Much appreciation to Jessica for your support of the metal scene. \m/

Motionless in White – Disguise

Motionless in White brought the heat this year with Disguise. Chris Motionless brought some disgusting vocals. The stand out track for me was “Thoughts & Prayers.”

Thy Art Is Murder – Human Target

Thy Art is Murder never fail to disappoint and that is no less true this year with Human Target. The album starts with the brutal title track, but the album hinges, for me, around “Death Squad Anthem” and “Make America Hate Again.”

Ashbringer – Absolution

Ashbringer’s Absolution is probably the most “one of these things is not like the other” of my picks for this year, but the soundscapes that the band creates on the album, especially in both parts of “Eternal Separation,” are undeniably amazing. With tracks ranging from just over 7 minutes to 10 minutes 20 seconds, this 1 hour and 8-minute album is a marathon and not a sprint. Let each track envelope you in itself. It’s well worth it.

Counterparts – Nothing Left to Love
“Wings of Nightmares” really brought me into this album. These Hamilton, Ontario, Canadian hardcore metallers won me over this year with their combination of punishing instrumentation and emotive lyrics. Also check out “Paradise and Plague.”

Upon A Burning Body – Southern Hostility
Upon a Burning Body pushed through to stand out this year with Southern Hostility. This follow-up to their 2016 effort Straight From The Barrio has a strong opener in the track “Southern Hostility,” faithful to UABB’s style. Other standout tracks include “King of Diamonds,” “Burn,” and “Soul Searcher.”
