Melodic folk death metal band Ensiferum have released a new lyric video for my favorite song “Run From The Crushing Tide” from Thalassic. This record has been an explosive and inspiring new era for the band and is one of the absolute best epic metal albums of 2020, a must support release! The addition of new keyboard player/lead clean vocalist Pekka Montin has been a huge hit with fans, one of the best decisions of Ensiferum’s already storied legacy!

“Run From the Crushing Tide” is one of the songs which best captures the grim sea adventure themes of this specific album. Amazing high vocals, roaring gutturals and a truly momentous warrior-minded guitar centric bridge. I am very pleased they have released this song as a single as it is perhaps the best song on the record.

Mixed and mastered by Jens Bogren, Thalassic was recorded and produced in Petrax and Sonic Pump studios by Janne Joutsenniemi, who was involved on their albums Victory Songs (2007) and From Afar (2009).

“We like to go to a studio when we have all the songs 99.9% ready so the producer’s main job is to kick our asses while we record,” states bassist/vocalist Sami Hinkka. “Of course Janne Joutsenniemi is a world-class producer, and we asked his opinion if we were doubting any details. It was really a pleasure to work with him again, and I think this was one of the most easy-going studio sessions I have ever been part of. We are extremely happy with the result.”

The album is also charting well!

Today you can stream the current recorded works of Egregore, the recently launched solo project of Utah-based multi-instrumentalist M.A.E. A collaboration with Sentient Ruin will see the light via a limited edition cassette compilation retrospective titled Thought Form , scheduled for a late September 2020 release.

Envisioned by band mastermind M.A.E and Sentient Ruin together, “Thought Form” is a fifteen-minute cassette tape compilation that includes all of Egregore’s tracks released so far via various self released demo tapes and splits, plus two more brand new previously unreleased tracks. Stream it in full now on Bandcamp (link above).

The band somehow already has made it to Metal Archives and delivers a rough hewn, splintering stake to the heart of the scene. “Dysthymic Gloom” is like a brutal rodeo ride amidst a blood red clouded hurricane that will appeal to fans of Napalm Death, early Exhumed or  even the first Fantomas record. Check it out now!

FORETOKEN release debut album ‘Ruin’

Prosthetic Records have teamed up with Virginia’s ambitious Foretoken to release Ruin, a blend of folk, death and black metal styles.

Dan Cooley commented:
“The record’s release brings an equal mix of excitement, anticipation, and anxiety. We’ve spent the last almost two years writing and obsessing over every detail of the album. There are definitely some things we’ve learned throughout that process which we will incorporate in the next record, but for now we’re confident our debut, Ruin, is everything we wanted it to be: cinematic, energetic, and at times melancholy. We hope everyone enjoys the album and we want to thank everyone who supported us early on through Bandcamp.”

Bandmate, Steve Redmond added:
“We’re super excited for everyone to hear the album. This project started as nothing more than a “bedroom studio project” that would’ve probably never seen the light of day and evolved into something much more. This is my first time writing a symphonic metal record and it has been incredibly fun. It has also been a learning experience. With Ruin we really want the listener to be able to go on a musical journey through these myths and legends. We hope we were able to capture that with this record. We hope everyone has as much fun listening to Ruin as we had making it. ”

During the creation of Ruin, the pair enlisted Hannes Grossmann (Triptykon, Hate Eternal, ex-Obscura, ex-Necrophagist) on drum duties. The album also features James Malone (Arsis) in a dueling guitar solo on the track A Deathless Prison, and was mixed by both Steve Redmond and Jacob Hansen; with mastering being done by Jacob Hansen at Hansen Studios. Jacob Hansen is a renowned producer/engineer who has worked on albums such as The Black Dahlia Murder’s Nightbringers and Fleshgod Apocalypse’s Veleno. The album’s art is a piece by Tomas Honz entitled Fallen Empires .

Heavy metallers Eleine have unleashed a powerful new video for “As I Breathe”, a blend of symphonic and melodeath that just kicked my ass! Huge melodies and punishing guitar abounds! Fans of Tarja, Arch Enemy, Delain will find plenty to love about this killer tune. Dancing In Hell is this Swedish band’s third long player and you should definitely pre order it today! It releases late November and is sure to be one of the last monumental records of the underground you can use to blast 2020 into the stratosphere as we look towards better days.

Happy Labor Day Freakend, head bangers. I hope you have all seen Bill & Ted 3 by now and are sort of aimlessly looking for something to chase it down with, cuz I have your RDA of hard rock fun right here! Here are two fun new music videos to help you keep your fists pumping over the weekend and into the far future.

First up we head with the mastermind Mr. Corey Taylor down ‘HWY 666’ in a new animated clip! #CMFT is out Oct. 2nd and is gonna own hard rock for late 2020. This song is demon spit, burnt asphalt and pure rebellion.

And secondly we have a rad new cover by Madame Mayhem for you of the Aerosmith classic “Livin’ On The Edge”, certainly fitting for these times. I always loved Joe’s guitars in this song and the cover does it justice! Just enough sweet and snarl in perfect balance. Makes sense…Madame Mayhem is very talented and this cover song was produced and arranged by Mark Hudson, who was also a songwriter on  the original “Living On The Edge” with Steven Tyler and Joe Perry.

The video is “From The Vault” throwback footage, making of, and behind the scenes of the hustle at the beginning of MM’s rock career, a real behind the scenes take with live performance shots too! Crank it up! You can’t fake this kind of road won , rock as lived experience authenticity! And did we mention her voice rules?!

September Showdown: Top 4 release picks of the month

Posted by Morgan Y Evans - Walking Bombs on Wednesday, September 2, 2020 at 1:25 PM (PST)

Varg wonder if they should have gone glamping when they quickly run out of Oreos and Ale.

September is seeping with molten metallic sensory overload and we are here today to break down some of our top records of the month to check out. This is not a fully comprehensive list, as there is a lot of cool stuff on the imminent horizon. This is, however, some of the stuff I have been bumping the most this past week that I think is rad.

Check out my top picks nearing release BELOW.

DEAFBRICK stream album at Cvlt Nation

Deafbrick – the collaborative album between Brazil’s DEAFKIDS and the UK’s PETBRICK – will see release this Friday in North America through Neurot Recordings and in Europe via Rocket Recordings. CVLT Nation is now hosting an advance stream of the entire album alongside an interview with both acts. This is a very exciting moment for the underground as both acts are pillars of inventive cacophony and this collab is sure to be something left field and morale boosting for fans of extreme, freaky chaos and percussive weirdness.

PETBRICK is the creation of Wayne Adams (Big Lad, Death Pedals) and Iggor Cavalera (Sepultura, Soulwax, Cavalera Conspiracy) and more. The band has released several EPs and albums through Closed Casket Activities, Rocket Recordings, and more over recent years, and they have toured and collaborated live with a variety of acts.

DEAFKIDS erupted into the international scene when Neurosis’ Neurot Recordings signed them in 2016. Since then, the label has issued two albums from the trio, and they toured internationally including opening for Neurosis, Bell Witch, Big|Brave, and others across North America, and alongside Rakta, Petbrick, and others in Europe.

CVLT Nation writes in part of the album’s intense and psychedelic attack, “DeafBrick is a unique aural experience and I’ll give it to the guys: there’s nothing quite like it on this planet. Their collaboration brings out the best in both bands and tends to temper any of their individual excesses. This is a focused, intelligent record of noise, industrial, metal, and punk. This is the most original album I’ve heard all year, but it is definitely not one of the most pleasant. There’s an element here, one of deprogramming, or maybe it’s programming, but you can feel your brain bleed in certain parts, like the band is issuing forth sounds that are breaking down mental barriers you never knew existed. This isn’t dangerous, but it is singular, and once you allow yourself to delve into its depths, you won’t come out the same person.”
Listen to the entire DEAFKIDS & PETBRICK Deafbrick collab at CVLT Nation early RIGHT HERE.
Also see the previously issued videos for “Sweat-Drenched Wreck” HERE and “Força Bruta” HERE.

Deafbrick will see release on LP and digital platforms this Friday, September 4th. In North America, find preorders through Neurot Recordings HERE and HERE. In Europe find preorders through Rocket Recordings HERE. Preorders for all digital providers are available HERE.

Today, pan-international death metal elite Darkened reveal a new lyric video for “Kingdom of Decay. The track is the fourth to be revealed from the band’s highly anticipated debut album, Kingdom of Decay, set for international release on September 11th via Edged Circle Productions. With an entrancing lyric video created by David Havlena (www.hdart.info), see & hear Darkened‘s title track “Kingdom of Decay” in its entirety HERE at Edged Circle‘s official YouTube channel.

We need the art/discourse of our world to speak to our times. Homogeneity is hopefully impossible but we always seem to strive for it as a species to brand ourselves within confines that constitute an allegedly safe, capitalist ‘normal’ – even as we scramble to buy sugary drinks that would kill any mildly diabetic person, indebt ourselves as we purchase crap we don’t need at all for a false sense of upward mobility or adhere to impossible beauty standards.

It is hard to face our grief and collectively or individually mourn. It is oh so easy in these times of Covid and racial conflict to go numb with sorrow. Some people even construct false confidence, like people in denial as they swagger around all while catching Covid at a fucking Smash Mouth concert. I can’t help but also think of the false bravado of Tom Waits in Jim Jarmusch’s still hard to top Down By Law, drinking and driving around New Orleans with no seatbelt on in a stolen car and mumbling half hearted attempts at self-encouragement like his shitty life isn’t about to hit the skids even worse (as if getting dumped by Ellen Barkin isn’t a sad enough fate for any down and out character). As Waits noted himself on Blood Money, “Everything Goes To Hell” anyway.

Thankfully now we have a record called Dream Griever from the excellent new project BLEAKHEART. It will startle your senses open like a bucket of ice water dumped on your head, even when the music is quite mellow.  Initially the endeavor served as the solo project of JP Damron (Vermin Womb, In The Company Of Serpents) who soon recruited friend Kelly Schilling (Dreadnought) to contribute her voice. Following the release of their first demo they were joined by Mark Chronister and Josh Kauffman.

“The Visitor” is a beautiful and stark channeling of melancholia that calls to mind some of the more ethereal solo Jarboe material, the spacious chill of B I G | B R A V E or even some hallucinatory psych rock Western film score paired with mournful, frustrated humanism. It is an anthem for the pain of repeating past mistakes. Will we ever learn?

By juxtaposing somber, low-fi, guitar-driven soundscapes with shimmering, ethereal vocals and keys, Dream Griever seeks to reflect on the absurdity of the human condition. “The album explores the patterns of destruction and turmoil created within ourselves, and the time we lose within those fleeting cycles,” says Schilling. Through anger, deception, loss, and wanting, Dream Griever presents a vulnerable and beautiful atmosphere of introspection around the pitfalls of human experience. “The record goes to all of those places – the acknowledgement, the attempted escape, and the inevitable missteps into the depths of our own machinations.”
Dream Griever was produced, recorded, mixed, and mastered by Pete DeBoer (Blood Incantation, Dreadnought) at World Famous Studios in February/March 2020 and comes swathed in the art of Brian D’Agosta (Gostworks Art).

BLEAKHEART‘s Dream Griever will see release independently on CD, cassette, and digitally with Sailor Records handling the vinyl edition. For preorders, visit the band’s Bandcamp page at THIS LOCATION.

Now this is what I am talking about! Love when a band does their own cool take on a cover, especially something that isn’t such an obvious song pick in the first place. Symphonic metal band RAVENLIGHT have offered up a killer and fresh take on Ghost’s Meliora B-side ‘Zenith’, transmuted into the band’s own Irish symphonic metal aesthetic. The results are pretty glorious, I must say.

Singer Rebecca Feeney had the following to say about the track: “Zenith may seem a not so obvious song for a cover, however, we went with Zenith for many reasons. I really enjoyed singing along to it, it really suited my range. Furthermore, we felt that Zenith is a very underrated Ghost song, due to the fact that it is a bonus track on the Vinyl version of Meliora, so it is not as well known as other tracks, giving us a chance to really put our own spin on it.”
Hey Cardinal or Papa or whoever is in charge of the Ghouls these days, grab this band up with an opening slot the next time touring can happen again!

Boundaries have announced their debut full-length, Your Receding Warmth, due out November 13th via Unbeaten Records. To mark the occasion, the band shared the devastating lead single “Carve” with an accompanying music video that ‘…follows the good and bad that rushes into one’s life to fill an emotional gap’. I love how the very angry vocals are still intelligible, yet all consuming. Also really like the guitar tone, heavy but not just completely distorted mush. The very first riff even reminded me of RATM for half a second before going into more metalcore/aggro post hardcore territory. Also really digging the album title, painting a relatable picture of estrangement. The anticipated album was recorded with producer Randy Leboeuf at Graphic Nature Audio and we look forward to it. . Your Receding Warmth is available to preorder here and the music video for “Carve” is available to watch on YouTube as well as to stream on Spotify.

RIP Riley Gale of Power Trip

Posted by Morgan Y Evans - Walking Bombs on Tuesday, August 25, 2020 at 7:40 PM (PST)

Riley Gale of Power Trip, arguably the fastest rising band in metal and hardcore in recent memory, has died. The metal and punk community are devastated but it is nice to see so many people coming together to honor and mourn a truly great frontman. Rest In Power Riley was trending on Twitter over some really evil stuff, so it is cool to see good can win sometimes even at a sad fucking moment. Love rises and hardcore can be family still.

I remember being at the Warzone tribute in the Lower East Side a few years ago and ‘Executioner’s Tax’ was maybe the only newer song I heard played over the PA that day along with classic punk and KRS-One and stuff. I remember people were just vibin’ so hard to the Power Trip and I knew they were the great top new thrash band of this era. Major love and condolences to all who are affected by this terrible loss. – MYE.

LOUD.

I have long maintained that Kevin Sharp (of Brutal Truth fame) has the distinctly most savage and hearty screaming voice in metal and the latest from his project with Napalm Death alumni, Venomous Concept‘s Politics Versus The Erection, does little to shake that certainty. The bellow to out bellow them all is paired with the band’s most blatant Poison Idea-worship yet for one of the most satisfying audio weapons yet to wield in the political shitshow of 2020. I am in need of blasting it after pedo protector Cardinal Dolan spoke at the RNC last night as if he is any moral authority on anything!

Kevin Sharp comments: “We wanted to do a record that sounded reactionary. We went into a studio wrote and recorded PVE in four days, in the age of digital thinking, records full of edits. Politics Versus the Erection is perfectly imperfect.”

3TEETH released a GUNS AKIMBO two track 2x single featuring cover songs of “Ballroom Blitz” by Sweet and “You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)” by Dead or Alive. Both songs are featured in the 2019 film GUNS AKIMBO starring Daniel Radcliffe. Purchase or stream the new music HERE.

“We were in the middle of an 8 week summer tour when Jason ( the director ) hit me up on twitter basically asking if we’d be interested in working on some music for his new movie. I thought his last film Deathgasm was super fun and when he told me the plot and showed me some scenes for Guns Akimbo I was immediately interested. He then told me the cover songs it would be which made me a little skeptical and than told me we basically had like 10 days to turn in masters which was pretty daunting because we literally had 1 day off on our tour schedule which landed 2 days before it needed to be turned in. I knew it was going to be nearly impossible but I said fuck it, we’ll make it happen. So after our show in Nashville we spent a full 12 hour day at Southern Ground studios and didn’t leave till we had the tracks. I remember thinking to myself at one point, why fuck did I agree to this time frame and how badly everyone just wanted to sleep in on our day off but somehow someway it wall worked out and Jason and the producers loved the music. So the lesson learned here is, fuck days off,” states 3TEETH frontman Alexis “Lex” Mincolla about the release.

“I was approaching the end of GUNS AKIMBO post production, and had a big problem. None of the music cues for a particular action scene were working. The scene features our hero Miles (Daniel Radcliffe) being tracked down to his work by a deranged spree killer, who proceeds to spray the office with a lead bukkake. It needed something special. I decided to reach out to one of my favorite bands: 3TEETH. I had been thrashing their latest album METAWAR, which is pretty much the official soundtrack to the apocalyptic hellscape we call modern society. I knew their catchy brand of industrial metal would be perfect for the on-screen insanity.

Although they were busy touring, Lex generously agreed to smash out a version of Dead Or Alive’s – “You Spin Me Round” on one of their rest days. I was under the gun, being told that if we didn’t have a track in a few days, a lame generic music cue would have to suffice. Fortunately, 3TEETH blew everyone away with a crushing take on the 80’s glam pop hit that both surpasses and subverts it. The producers loved the track so much that they agreed to have them record a second cover song, Sweet’s Ballroom Blitz. Working with 3TEETH on the film was an absolute blast. These singles are like crack for your ears, and compliment the bubblegum hyperviolence of GUNS AKIMBO perfectly,” adds director Jason Howden.

3TEETH’s latest album, METAWAR, was released via Century Media Records in July of 2019 to much acclaim. The full-length album was produced by Sean Beavan (Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson).
