Album Review: Cauldron Black Ram – Stalagmire

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Friday, June 20, 2014 at 3:51 PM (PST)

When you hear “A Litany of Sailor’s Sins”, it’s as if power-hungry oars are beating down on your heads, slow, moving water aside to crush down on you with guitar soaked fury. as a vocal death growl welcomes you home.

Cauldron Black Ram are a long running outfit from Southern Australia who defy expectations of what a pirate metal band ought to sound like. Press play on their track “A Litany Of Sailor’s Sins” and you are not going to hear anything along the lines of an Alestorm or Tankard. There is no sea chanty feel or fun loving swashbuckling going on here, just balls to the wall death metal. This band is much more like barnacles on an undead skeleton pirate ship’s hull than a fancy hat and brand new cutlass. They don’t make me think of parrots. Let’s face it, the most metal thing in those Jack Sparrow films was definitely the doomed undead, anyway.

Stalagmite is an awesome album and the only reason it isn’t rated higher here is really a production thing. The songs lurch, slam or charge forward powerfully enough, and in some cases truly astound like the powerful dirge that opens “Maw” (a song that evokes the vast open sea before trudging into a cursed and resigned feeling of horror). Grunts, screams and roars abound on this record, with solid playing across decks.

Christian Mistress should really be everyone’s favorite new band in a perfect world. Christine Davis’ vocals recall The Gits’ divine Mia Zapata & with just about as much attitude & soul. That’s one of the best compliments I’ve ever paid a band in a revue. This Olympia,WA real thing are a true heavy metal band and have already been endorsed by Ajna Offensive’s Tyler Davis & Darkthrone’s Gylve Nagell, so don’t just take my word on it. Sister Sin (who I like) are kicking ass in a more commercial sort of Motley Crue female fronted hard rock mode but Christian Mistress are another great band with female vocals I’ve recently discovered, a band with a rougher, leaner mojo, a throwback metal sound and an amazing band name. It’s that same kind of raw, primal beat down that attracted me to NYC’s She Wolves who I was lucky enough to eventually sing back up vocals for. AGONY…is just 6 songs that’ll make you pant for more by the end. Motorhead grit meets early Judas Priest worthy dueling guitars and sexy, bluesy darkness. The confidence and true to form songwriting on tunes like “Omega Stone” and “Desert Rose” defy empty showboating and make this an A+ release. A band that can hold back tastefully to make the songs a little better but still have sick chops gets my respect. Make no mistake, they really rip as well. This, Ufomammut, Sabbath Assembly and the latest from Danzig have me feeling spoiled this year! If Christian Mistress covered the song “Never Say Die” by Black Sabbath I would cream my pants & cry tears of un-Virgin Mary blood.
