Almost all death metal fans agree that Gorguts are perhaps the most universally beloved act when it comes to heroic compositions, generally more intellectual topics and technical austerity. The band have kicked off their early 2016 Euro tour (this line-up is STACKED!) and the dates are below.

Album Review: Black Cobra – “Imperium Simulacra”

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Thursday, March 10, 2016 at 9:11 AM (PST)

Black-Cobra-Imperium-Simulacra-46661-1

Black Cobra are a band with a sense of purpose. It’s evident if you listen to
any of the sludge punk duo’s onslaught filled and rhythmically rewarding
records that the band cut their teeth on many great bands before them and are
keen to carry the torch. A little bit Melvins, a bit of Karp riff charge and
yet a much more rawboned execution with an emphasis on a live sounding
insistence ensures this band could play with any metal or punk band and more
than hold their own.

Some people wrongfully think of legends Earth as a one style band. While, for
instance, “Badgers Bane” and, say, “Tibetan Quaaludes” both feature long,
droned out guitars with an emphasis on feel, there are still lots of subtle
differences related to the year of composition, intent of meaning, etc. Black
Cobra, like Motorhead or Black Tusk, also get kind of pigeonholed as a rad but
mostly one trick pony but that sells their action packed performances and
kinetic records far short.

Let’s check out new sci-fi infused record Imperium Simulacra (order HERE).

“Challenger Deep” arrives victoriously, charging in with giant balls. I am
loving how the vocals, particularly on title track “Imperium Simulacra” are
kind of sounding more and more like a punk rock version of Venom these days ,
a bit more tangible to understand and more snarled. As always the band are
tight as fuck, rattling out fist pumping anthems that tow the line between
poison spitting High On Fire charge and locked in machine gun snare and payoff
riff build (particularly during “Eye Among The Blind”).

Australia’s #1 progressive metal export, Ne Obliviscaris have launched a forward-thinking new concept, one that could potentially help many bands the world over fill the gap in revenue that has dwindled over the years due to the decline in music sales and other revenue streams that once kept bands on the road. These days those tables have turned and artists need to tour to promote a release. Touring however, does not come cheap as the band go into heavy detail about in their statement below.

Having had one of the most successful music crowd funding campaigns ever via Pozible, NeO fans have proven their willingness to support a band that provides them with so much entertainment and meaning.

In 2014 the band raised over $86 000AUD via their fans, which broke the Australian record for crowd funding and to this day it remains one of the highest netting music campaigns in the world.

With NeO currently finishing up their massive North American tour with Cradle Of Filth, they are looking towards the future and that involves their fans at every conceivable level in a fashion arguably unprecedented in the industry.

Greek black metal freedom fighters Rotting Christ continue their exhalted career of twisting expectations into fragments with the first, gloriously smoking track “In Nomine Dei Nostri” from new album Rituals. Hear the dark gem at Decibel HERE.

Whereas other less skilled bands would turn the heavily intoned chanting in this track to doggerel, Rotting Christ evoke a Satanic and brazen confidence that translates across this serious ear scorcher for a song that underscores the corruption in this world. The heart bleeding sense of melody that shoots through the song as well is truly something to behold, for the brave nd rebellious out there.

Enigmatic Icelandic rock band SOLSTAFIR have seen the release of a new video for the track “Miðaftann”. The video, directed by Harri Haataja and Vesa Ranta, is streaming now at NPR.

Regarding the video, SOLSTAFIR guitarist/frontman Aðalbjörn Tryggvason comments, “The track is about wandering in darkness. Playing chess with Death, getting burned by salt, drowning in the ultimate wave of sin and returning back home by using moonlight as navigation.”

Video directors Harri Haataja and Vesa Ranta comment, “They told us a real-life story about a sailor who lost his crew at sea and was stranded to shore as the only survivor,” the directors write. “He proceeded to find his way to town and [along the way] he found a barrel filled with water. But the water was frozen, so he had to punch through the ice with his bare hands to fight the dehydration. Eventually, after a long journey, he found his way to town and survived.”

“Miðaftann” is taken from SOLSTAFIR’s critically acclaimed new album , ‘Otta’. The album, which has made Decibel Magazine’s top 40 albums of 2014, is streaming here, and is available now at the Season of Mist E-shop.

Venomous Concept stream new song “Rise”

I’ve always thought Venomous Concept was a cool…concept? No, they are actually cool in reality as well. And quite venomous.

Anything Kevin Sharp (ex-Brutal Truth) is part of is always completely unhinged. I maintain that he has the single fiercest howling bellow ape scream in metal history. Go listen to the Damaged album Purified In Pain he was on, fuck!!! While it is a drag Buzzo from Melvins hasn’t been in the group for awhile, VC still have Napalm Death alumni and more. They aint skimpin’ in the awesome department.

Anyhow, the band have silly ass new album art and  are streaming a new track from their forthcoming new album, ‘Kick Me Silly; VC 3’. The track, titled “Rise”, is streaming now with Revolver Magazine.

Regarding the new track, vocalist Kevin Sharp comments: “I like the contrast in guitars here. A decent mix of melodic bite…like if a shoegazer had more nut, less mustache.”

‘Kick Me Silly; VC3’ will be released by Season of Mist worldwide on January 8. The album is available for pre-order across several CD, ltd. LP and ltd. cassette formats at the Season of Mist E-Shop.

Emptiness sign with Season Of Mist

Emptiness have a new home with Season of Mist. I interviewed the experimental Belgian death metal band (and I do mean experimental) awhile ago for their last monster Nothing But The Whole and can’t wait to hear what scary music they make next. Like Hypothermia .Swallowed, or Harmonic Cross, the dudes in Emptiness seem more about creating a total mindfuck of a bleak vibe rather than adhering to expectation. I admire that greatly and kudos to Season Of Mist for supporting real art like this.

Regarding the signing, EMPTINESS comment: “We are currently working on the follow-up to ‘Nothing But The Whole’, for which our aim is to release it in late 2016 on our new label Season of Mist. We also would like to thank Dark Descent for supporting us in our decision and for helping to spread the seeds of the void. Important news will follow in due time.”

Kylesa stream “Exhausting Fire” with Noisey

Kylesa have a stream of their enjoyable new record Exhausting Fire over at
Noisey. The hard working band’s latest addition to their legacy, their seventh
LP in all, has some of the stomp they started back in the self titled days and
mastered on Static TensionsUltraviolet and Spiral Shadow‘s oddball charms
are alive and well as the band “throw caution to the wind” and marry blues
rock and sludge with a broader sense of melody than ever and a more and more
masterful sense of psychedelia.

Stream this baby HERE.

“Falling” can instantly be filed away alongside “Tired Climb” and the great and almost Soulfly-esque instrumental “Parent’s Song ” from the S/T as a new classic of layering, tone setting and feel. “Falling” is a dreamier yet just a pinch disconcerting lullabye that shows the post-punk influences and pop flirtation on the fringes of the band’s at times monumentally heavy wall of sound. This is the record that ought to get Ecstatic Vision, Crowbar and Blues Pills fans excited in equal measure, in a perfect world.
