Mastodon take the “High Road” less traveled

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at 2:27 PM (PST)

Troy Mastodon Pic Fierce

Mastodon have released a new song “High Road”, seemingly because it leaked anyway. The swarthy jam is from their pending album Once Around The Sun. The tune is pretty standard in structure, with a steady chug reminiscent of a more hi-fi older Mastodon but with a big melodic chorus. It will probably sound even better live and dirtier than this.

I miss seeing these guys in shitty clubs but they couldn’t be more deserving of their popularity. And the bridge/solo section of this new jam is really epic and inspiring. You can’t hold these guys back from journeying to different modes of live wire synaptic rockery. Even with a more populist structure, they still sound crazier than any other metal band as big as they are.

Mastodon defend controversial Thanksgiving shirt

Posted by GageT on Monday, December 2, 2013 at 10:40 AM (PST)

In case you missed it over the holiday weekend (well, if you live in the US), Mastodon released a Thanksgiving t-shirt depicting a white male pilgrim holding a shotgun to the head of a female Native American (that’s it up there). Naturally, this caused some online controversy, resulting in a lot of accusations of the band being racist. The band responded via their Facebook page, defending the shirt and explaining why they’re not racists:

“Regarding our thanks giving shirt, whether you choose to believe or not, the American Indians were massacred by the white settlers who became the Americans we are today.
this shirt represents this atrocity and celebrating in the face of this atrocity is chilling.
we may have a sick sense of humor, but we are far from being “Racist” as some of you who might not get it are calling us.”

Regardless of what your thoughts on the shirt are, you have to give them props for sticking to their guns on this one.

In related news, guitarist Bill Kelliher spoke with the UK’s Metal Hammer magazine last week, and he said that they were beginning tracking this past weekend, so expect a new slab of Mastodon goodness coming your way in early 2014.

Mastodon to contribute song to upcoming Disney animated film

Posted by SeanB on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at 8:30 AM (PST)

Well this is pretty awesome, Atlanta prog metal group Mastodon are recording a song for the upcoming Disney movie Monsters University. The movie is a prequel to the 2001 film Monsters Inc.

The film is set to be released June 21, 2013 with actors Billy Crystal and John Goodman picking up before they left off as Mike Wazowski and Sulley.

Mastodon is no stranger to movie scores, they wrote several songs for the 2010 release “Jonah Hex” collaborating with composer Mario Beltrami. Film director Jimmy Hayward asked them to participate after listening to Blood Mountain on repeat, which is pretty badass.

Sonisphere 2012 has been cancelled

Posted by jessepac on Thursday, March 29, 2012 at 1:31 PM (PST)

Sonisphere 2012The pride of Knebworth, England has is no longer, as the 2012 edition of the Sonisphere Festival is no longer happeneing.

Here is the full statement from the promoters:

“It is with very heavy hearts and much regret that we announce the cancellation of Sonisphere Knebworth 2012. Putting the festival together in what is proving to be a very challenging year was more difficult than we anticipated and we have spent the last few months fighting hard to keep Sonisphere in the calendar. Unfortunately circumstances have dictated that we would be unable to run the festival to a standard that both the artists and that Sonisphere’s audience would rightly expect. We want to express our deepest regrets to the artists and to thank all the staff, suppliers and contractors who worked so hard with us to try and pull off what has proven to be an impossible task and we know how much they share in our disappointment. We also want to send a huge thanks to the Sonisphere fans who stuck by us and we are so sorry that we can’t fulfil what we set out to do. Ticket holders will automatically receive a full refund direct from their ticket agents.”

Metal acts like Mastodon, Gojira, Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation, Electric Wizard, and many more were slated to play.

This video is kind of old but worth the watch. After their show at Coliseu dos Recrios in Lisbon, Portugal on January 22, 1012 Atlanta based prog/sludge/doom metal band Mastodon’s guitarist Bill Kelliher was interviewed by António Maria Correia of Geração C. Some of you may know Mastodon as the band who lost to the Foo Fighters for the Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance at the Grammy’s but most of us know them as one of the best metal bands in recent memory. Mastodon’s 5th studio album The Hunter was released in September 2011 on Reprise Records.

New Video: Mastodon – “Dry Bone Valley”

Posted by jessepac on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 11:43 AM (PST)

Mastodon is back again with another crazy video, this time for the song “Dry Bone Valley” off of last year’s The Hunter, which was given a few Album of the Year awards in 2011.

Directed and animated by Tim Biskup, the trippy video continues the Mastodon trend of overlaying images over other images, giving an insane sense of scope and depth while driving metal into your skull.
