Band Spotlight: Oceans Of Slumber

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at 11:09 AM (PST)

Texan progressive metal powerhouses Oceans Of Slumber are one of the must watch acts of 2018. This band is incredible and compelling, constantly honing their craft and unafraid to develop a real emotional connection with listeners via the impressive musical arrangements paired with the moving and otherworldly vocals of Cammie Gilbert. This is one of the bands we are stanning so fucking hard this year. “The Banished Heart”, their gorgeous and emotional latest video, got 13k views in less than 24 hours! Not bad for a non-household name act still proving their staying power. In the bands words they are ,”…Binding the extreme with the grandiose and topping it with the soulful call of our very own siren.”

RIP Warrel Dane

Posted by Andrew Johann Datoush on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at 6:39 PM (PST)

Editor’s Note: Sorry for posting this late into the night but we have been reeling over here as fans from news that Sanctuary and Nevermore metal legend Warrel Dane has passed away. Thoughts, thanks and condolences to his people.

Ok, here we go… A shocking blow to the metal world today, metal legend Warrel Dane passed away from a heart attack in Brazil. Dane was known as the singer for SANCTUARY and NEVERMORE. He was in the process of recording his second solo album when he passed.

My introduction to SANCTUARY came in the early 90s. I was a young metalhead in the making and received a mixtape featuring the SANCTUARY classic “Future Tense”. I got both of their albums as quickly as a kid my age could (thinking I was 7/8ish).

NEVERMORE came into my life a bit later on. Remember, these were the days before you could just google search your favorite singers, and see what bands they were in. I think I was about 14 when I picked up a random metal compilation that featured NEVERMORE’s “I Am The Dog”. I even remember listening to it thinking “, This guy sounds like the singer from fucking SANCTUARY”.

I’m sure you could imagine my surprise and excitement to find out it was in fact the same singer. It wasn’t long after that I had picked up each NEVERMORE record that was out at the time. Warrel Dane, thank you for being such a huge part of my life and providing me with a lifetime of music.

I was fortunate enough to see you in person once in 2005 while you were on the first Gigantour. Sadly, the security guy took my camera at the door, so I wasn’t able to get a photo with you that day, but I was able to get a copy of This Godless Endeavor autographed. Hopefully, we can meet again on the other side, be it darkness or light. Much love There were a few quotes that I wanted to share, and I felt that was the best way to end the posting. Some said things much better than I could.

“So much to say but can’t find the words. Just solace in knowing we were friends again at the end of the day and that we enjoyed way more good times together than we did bad.” – Van Williams (NEVERMORE)

“We were good again, but not at the point of us jamming together. He was more dedicated to only music and he knew I had many other worlds to defile. I really wish we could have written again together. I wrote many things he probably would have been surprised by. Actually, I got SERPENT’S KNIGHT [Warrel’s pre- SANCTUARY band] back together in hopes to do a Seattle gig maybe with SANCTUARY after their next CD. He should still be alive. There was still much more in that man to give.” – Brad Poland (SERPENT’S KNIGHT)

“Warrel Dane is up in Heaven leading a legion of “Battle Angels”. I can hear that scream echoing through the clouds.. ‘Fall on your knees and hail to their dawn!’ Rest in Peace my friend” – Sean Peck (DEATH DEALER / CAGE)

Orphaned Land’s “Unsung Prophets & Dead Messiahs” art and info

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Thursday, October 26, 2017 at 4:08 PM (PST)

Orphaned Land are a special group within the family tree of metal, just so inspiring, unifying and cinematic. Today’s great news is that the band will release their new studio album Unsung Prophets & Dead Messiahs on January 26, 2018 via Century Media Records.

Jens Bogren once again took over mixing and mastering duties of what turned out to be the band’s best and biggest production so far. “Unsung Prophets & Dead Messiahs” will feature a guest appearance of guitar virtuoso Steve Hackett as well as guest vocal appearances by no other than Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian) and Tomas Lindberg (At The Gates). It will be very interesting to hear these capable men in the context of the band’s larger than life sound! The great album artwork was created by Valnoir.

Singer and frontman Kobi Farhi comments: “We are thrilled and so happy to finally reveal you the great artwork of Unsung Prophets & Dead Messiahs! Our music has always been a combination of anger, tragedy, protest and joy. We can’t wait for you to hear the 13 brand new tracks of this album. As always it will be very eclectic, no song sounds like the other and the whole album is a one big musical journey. We feel that this album takes our feelings to a new level of anger, protest and tragedy. The cover speaks for itself and it was made as tribute to the way governments design their money. Enjoy!”

Hardcore idols Sick Of It All have posted a clip of the band performing a stone cold classic “My Life” from Blood, Sweat and No Tears in Tokyo with Barney from fuckin’ Napalm Death on vocals! The crowd is of course loving it. Good times and just what the doctor ordered to cheer you up after a week of deaths in the metal scene.

Song Of The Week: “Of Blackened Wing” by WITCHERY

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at 7:08 PM (PST)

The newest single from WITCHERY is here. It is taken from I Am Legion,  due out on November 10, 2017 via CENTURY MEDIA RECORDS. Some dark death march sections pair very well with the faster thrashing moments for a fully on fire listen.

WITCHERY guitarist Jensen checked in with the following comment about “Of Blackened Wing”: “’Of Blackened Wing’ is a song that perfectly combines both the old and new sounds of WITCHERY. It mixes the thrashing touch of old with the grittiness and rawness of new. It’s one of my personal favorites on the “I Am Legion” album and it will definitely be a part of our set for our upcoming live shows.

Check out “Of Blackened Wing” in a video by Martin Hultgren (Gryt Film) streaming below.

You can also stream the single when you pre-order “I Am Legion” at: http://smarturl.it/WITCHERY-IAmLegion

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Monday, October 9, 2017 at 10:27 AM (PST)

British heavy metal act, SAVAGE MESSIAH, have just released a video for their brand new single, “Wing And A Prayer”, which is taken off their upcoming album, Hands Of Fate!

Frontman David Silver comments: “This is a powerful snapshot of our upcoming album, loud and anthemic! With my favourite guitar solo yet. We’ve had this song in our set for the past few shows and have been really taken aback at how ‘instant’ the song has been, and how well fans have reacted to it, so we’re really excited to share this video for all of you.”

Tribulation to tour with Arch Enemy, studio update

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at 5:10 PM (PST)

Dark conquerors of the imagination Tribulation (shit, that kind of rhymed in a semi-corny way and broke the spell, haha)…Um, rad as heck band of Swedish vampire deathlords Tribulation are in the studio AND also getting set to tour with Arch Enemy.

The band commented, “After tracking all the drums in the classic Soundtrade Studios we are now residing in Studio Cobra. It is a strange and wicked brew that we are currently concocting together with Martin Ehrencrona. 2018 will see the Vampyre return in a new form to usher in a new era of ventures and audible gloominess.”

TRIBULATION’s yet untitled fourth studio album is set to be released in January 2018. More information on the album will follow in the upcoming weeks.

In the meantime, TRIBULATION have been recently announced as support for Swedish metal giants Arch Enemy on the European leg of their “Will To Power” world tour!  “It is happening again!”, exclaimed the group, “We are returning to the road in conjunction with the release of our new album, first stop Europe with no other than ARCH ENEMY. See you all soon!” Full dates can be found below.

Undisputed melodic death metal kings At The Gates (basically the Metallica of their metallic sub-genre, only without ever pulling a Reload), have decided on a new guitarist. Instead of, say, jacking Ola Englund from The Haunted or Mike Schleibaum from Darkest Hour as some expected, the band have decided to give the coveted slot to an old friend. Jonas Stålhammar (pictured above) is currently a member of The Lurking Fear, Crippled Black Phoenix, Bombs Of Hades and God Macabre. He has previously played in Abhoth, Utumno and Macabre End.

At Metal Riot we are very excited to hear what fruit this union doth bear.

We have finally decided on a new guitar player, and we are ready to rip again! Actually he was our first choice, and we are happy to have him on board. Jonas Stålhammar has been a friend since the late eighties (Tomas used to tape trade with him back then!), and our paths have crossed many times during our careers.

We were looking for someone who had the same reference points as we do, someone from the same path, so to say, who understand the greatness of both Autopsy and King Crimson. Of course it was essential that our new member could fill the shoes of Anders’ performance-wise as well, but that was never an issue with Jonas. We were looking for someone with a deep understanding of what AT THE GATES are about, someone who could contribute creatively to the band.

Jonas Stålhammar will be a full member from day one, and will play on the upcoming full length album, scheduled for recording in November 2017 – January 2018.

We currently have 11 songs ready for said album, and are more inspired than perhaps ever before. You can expect a full-on AT THE GATES record with all the classic elements of the band. It is by far the most comprehensive album of the band to date, and will span all the way across the different elements of the band’s sound.

We are super-excited for 2018. It will be a good year for AT THE GATES, and our fans, for sure.”

Additionally, AT THE GATES have just announced their first live shows for 2018 to be as follows:

AT THE GATES – Live 2018
02.-04.03.2018 Tilburg (The Netherlands) – Netherlands Deathfest
13.-15.07.2018 Gävle (Sweden) – Gefle Metal Fest
Many more dates to be announced soon…

Witchery to return with “I Am Legion” album, release new video

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Friday, September 1, 2017 at 1:51 PM (PST)

Witchery knocked it out of the park with In His Infernal Majesty’s Service and now seem to have really gotten their devilish groove back after the long half decade gap between Witchkrieg and that album. IHIMS really should have made our staff year end best of list last year but thankfully we were hacked and lost a ton of site content so now you can’t see how we screwed up and didn’t include it. “Nosferatu” jams so gosh dang hard, we really screwed up.

We have another chance! Witchery are back already with a Century Media follow-up and are once again crushing it with the current band roster. The Swedes of charred thrash and gnarled emotional thickets shall drop I Am Legion in early November. Toxine/Legion/Emperor who?!! Angus Norder is turning out to be a real keeper (we hope)! Norder is joined again by Jensen (Guitar), Rickard Rimfält (Lead Guitar), Sharlee D’Angelo (Bass) and Chris Barkensjö (Drums). The album was produced and mixed by Daniel Bergstrand at Dugout Studios (Behemoth, In Flames, Meshuggah) and comes packaged in powerful artwork completed by Andreas Diaz Pettersson (as seen above).

Check out first taste “True North” (not a Bad Religion cover, though that would have been wild) below! Frozen wastes! Snarling! Evil!

Savage Messiah sign with Century Media Records

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at 7:54 PM (PST)

Metal Riot dutiful readers might remember the incredibly good Savage Messiah from an interview we did with them in 2014. The UK band will release a new album October 27th, 2017 as a late year entry into cool records this year, as if year end lists didn’t already have enough to contend with!! Ha, but all seriousness this band is killer and the good folks at Century Media were wise to scoop them up for their 4th album. The record is called Hands Of Fate.

I was supposed to see mighty black metallers Marduk tonight and my ride bailed at the last minute so I have been home stewing and drinking lemon tea all night, but this news makes me cheer up a bit. I love seeing hard working metal bands survive and grow. Metal is one of the coolest genres because fans are so real that it is possible with elbow grease and support to keep going if this music is your passion. Much respect to Savage Messiah!

Recorded at Rockfield Studios Monmouth (Black Sabbath, Rush, Queen), Hands Of Fate was produced by Scott Atkins (Cradle of Filth) and mastered by Dave Collins (Metallica, Soundgarden, Linkin Park). The cover art, as seen above, was completed by Travis Smith (Avenged Sevenfold, Opeth).

Title track “Hands Of Fate” is also available as a digital single on all streaming and download platforms along with being offered as an Instant Grat track on iTunes and Amazon. Love the intro to this one. Reminds me of good Megadeth/Metallica for sure with def a little “Enter Sandman” vibe.

“I believe that the main running thread during graffiti’s infancy in the mid-1960s, and its subsequent expansion during the following decades, was the underlying element of this movement being a youth-driven one.” – Freddy Alva

New York City. New York Hardcore.

Everyone knows that both the place and musical style have had a legendary impact in shaping wider culture and tastes around the globe. New York is forever the hub of America, the place where the Statue of Liberty (our strongest symbol of hope and justice despite what assholes like Trump’s failed Muppet fascist buddy Stephen Miller would have you believe) looks benignly outward welcoming and holding her torch high.

Everyone knows Judge, Sick Of It All, Madball, Burn, Killing Time, Skarhead and countless other influential and aggressive acts who have rallied crowds, raised adrenaline levels and blown minds for years. When it comes to the huge impact of graffiti on the world, the parallels are most often shown between hip hop music and graf artists. Some cool documentaries exist as well.  When it comes to the rise of NYHC and the impact and synergy between fans and players with the graffiti world, the story is still more clouded in the wider mass consciousness.

A fantastic new book aims to change that. Urban Styles: Graffiti In New York Hardcore (DiWulf Publishing) is a crucial and comprehensive guide featuring photos, interviews from key players and lots of informative info related in an at times informal but very real and insiders style manner. It is our immense pleasure today to share with our readers an interview with author Freddy Alva, a long time scene member and expert who has shaped this labor of love into a very special moment for fans of New York, the music, street art and the people.

Freddy was very active in the DIY culture of hardcore from the outset; he was a fixture at such venerated venues as CBGB during the heyday of their Sunday matinees. Along with friend and fellow NYHC stalwart Chaka Malik, Freddy covered the music scene through his fanzine New Breed and eventually released a well-known and highly revered compilation cassette that featured some of the most influential bands of the time, The New Breed Comp. A recent documentary sharing the same name has been released to critical acclaim.
