Undisputed melodic death metal kings At The Gates (basically the Metallica of their metallic sub-genre, only without ever pulling a Reload), have decided on a new guitarist. Instead of, say, jacking Ola Englund from The Haunted or Mike Schleibaum from Darkest Hour as some expected, the band have decided to give the coveted slot to an old friend. Jonas Stålhammar (pictured above) is currently a member of The Lurking Fear, Crippled Black Phoenix, Bombs Of Hades and God Macabre. He has previously played in Abhoth, Utumno and Macabre End.

At Metal Riot we are very excited to hear what fruit this union doth bear.

We have finally decided on a new guitar player, and we are ready to rip again! Actually he was our first choice, and we are happy to have him on board. Jonas Stålhammar has been a friend since the late eighties (Tomas used to tape trade with him back then!), and our paths have crossed many times during our careers.

We were looking for someone who had the same reference points as we do, someone from the same path, so to say, who understand the greatness of both Autopsy and King Crimson. Of course it was essential that our new member could fill the shoes of Anders’ performance-wise as well, but that was never an issue with Jonas. We were looking for someone with a deep understanding of what AT THE GATES are about, someone who could contribute creatively to the band.

Jonas Stålhammar will be a full member from day one, and will play on the upcoming full length album, scheduled for recording in November 2017 – January 2018.

We currently have 11 songs ready for said album, and are more inspired than perhaps ever before. You can expect a full-on AT THE GATES record with all the classic elements of the band. It is by far the most comprehensive album of the band to date, and will span all the way across the different elements of the band’s sound.

We are super-excited for 2018. It will be a good year for AT THE GATES, and our fans, for sure.”

Additionally, AT THE GATES have just announced their first live shows for 2018 to be as follows:

AT THE GATES – Live 2018
02.-04.03.2018 Tilburg (The Netherlands) – Netherlands Deathfest
13.-15.07.2018 Gävle (Sweden) – Gefle Metal Fest
Many more dates to be announced soon…

Witchery to return with “I Am Legion” album, release new video

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Friday, September 1, 2017 at 1:51 PM (PST)

Witchery knocked it out of the park with In His Infernal Majesty’s Service and now seem to have really gotten their devilish groove back after the long half decade gap between Witchkrieg and that album. IHIMS really should have made our staff year end best of list last year but thankfully we were hacked and lost a ton of site content so now you can’t see how we screwed up and didn’t include it. “Nosferatu” jams so gosh dang hard, we really screwed up.

We have another chance! Witchery are back already with a Century Media follow-up and are once again crushing it with the current band roster. The Swedes of charred thrash and gnarled emotional thickets shall drop I Am Legion in early November. Toxine/Legion/Emperor who?!! Angus Norder is turning out to be a real keeper (we hope)! Norder is joined again by Jensen (Guitar), Rickard Rimfält (Lead Guitar), Sharlee D’Angelo (Bass) and Chris Barkensjö (Drums). The album was produced and mixed by Daniel Bergstrand at Dugout Studios (Behemoth, In Flames, Meshuggah) and comes packaged in powerful artwork completed by Andreas Diaz Pettersson (as seen above).

Check out first taste “True North” (not a Bad Religion cover, though that would have been wild) below! Frozen wastes! Snarling! Evil!

Savage Messiah sign with Century Media Records

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at 7:54 PM (PST)

Metal Riot dutiful readers might remember the incredibly good Savage Messiah from an interview we did with them in 2014. The UK band will release a new album October 27th, 2017 as a late year entry into cool records this year, as if year end lists didn’t already have enough to contend with!! Ha, but all seriousness this band is killer and the good folks at Century Media were wise to scoop them up for their 4th album. The record is called Hands Of Fate.

I was supposed to see mighty black metallers Marduk tonight and my ride bailed at the last minute so I have been home stewing and drinking lemon tea all night, but this news makes me cheer up a bit. I love seeing hard working metal bands survive and grow. Metal is one of the coolest genres because fans are so real that it is possible with elbow grease and support to keep going if this music is your passion. Much respect to Savage Messiah!

Recorded at Rockfield Studios Monmouth (Black Sabbath, Rush, Queen), Hands Of Fate was produced by Scott Atkins (Cradle of Filth) and mastered by Dave Collins (Metallica, Soundgarden, Linkin Park). The cover art, as seen above, was completed by Travis Smith (Avenged Sevenfold, Opeth).

Title track “Hands Of Fate” is also available as a digital single on all streaming and download platforms along with being offered as an Instant Grat track on iTunes and Amazon. Love the intro to this one. Reminds me of good Megadeth/Metallica for sure with def a little “Enter Sandman” vibe.

Freddy Alva/ Photo by Jammi Sloane York

“I believe that the main running thread during graffiti’s infancy in the mid-1960s, and its subsequent expansion during the following decades, was the underlying element of this movement being a youth-driven one.” – Freddy Alva

New York City. New York Hardcore.

Everyone knows that both the place and musical style have had a legendary impact in shaping wider culture and tastes around the globe. New York is forever the hub of America, the place where the Statue of Liberty (our strongest symbol of hope and justice despite what assholes like Trump’s failed Muppet fascist buddy Stephen Miller would have you believe) looks benignly outward welcoming and holding her torch high.

Everyone knows Judge, Sick Of It All, Madball, Burn, Killing Time, Skarhead and countless other influential and aggressive acts who have rallied crowds, raised adrenaline levels and blown minds for years. When it comes to the huge impact of graffiti on the world, the parallels are most often shown between hip hop music and graf artists. Some cool documentaries exist as well.  When it comes to the rise of NYHC and the impact and synergy between fans and players with the graffiti world, the story is still more clouded in the wider mass consciousness.

A fantastic new book aims to change that. Urban Styles: Graffiti In New York Hardcore (DiWulf Publishing) is a crucial and comprehensive guide featuring photos, interviews from key players and lots of informative info related in an at times informal but very real and insiders style manner. It is our immense pleasure today to share with our readers an interview with author Freddy Alva, a long time scene member and expert who has shaped this labor of love into a very special moment for fans of New York, the music, street art and the people.

Freddy was very active in the DIY culture of hardcore from the outset; he was a fixture at such venerated venues as CBGB during the heyday of their Sunday matinees. Along with friend and fellow NYHC stalwart Chaka Malik, Freddy covered the music scene through his fanzine New Breed and eventually released a well-known and highly revered compilation cassette that featured some of the most influential bands of the time, The New Breed Comp. A recent documentary sharing the same name has been released to critical acclaim.

TRIPTYKON
have made the following statement announcing upcoming festival appearances and their search for a new drummer:

“We feel very honoured to have been invited to play Spain’s Leyendas del Rock and Germany’s Party.San festivals this August. Both festivals hold a unique significance for Triptykon: our concert at Leyendas del Rock will mark the first time Triptykon will play in Spain, fulfilling a desire we have had for quite some time.

The return to Party.San is equally important for us. Triptykon’s first appearance at the festival, in August of 2011, was heavily marred by the unexpected shutdown of the main stage due to storm damage, and by a number of local organizational issues. Party.San is a truly extraordinary festival in our eyes, and we feel privileged and delighted to be given the opportunity to finally honour it with a proper concert.

But these two festivals are significant to us for yet another, far more personal reason. These will be the final concerts we will play with our drummer, Norman Lonhard.

Norman joined Triptykon in December of 2008, thereby completing the freshly formed band. He recorded two acclaimed albums, an EP, and a single with the group, appeared in all of Triptykon’s video clips, and performed uncounted concerts around the globe with us.

We are proud of Triptykon’s exceedingly stable line-up, not least in light of some of the events that transpired in Triptykon’s predecessor, Celtic Frost. It reflects Triptykon’s internal spirit of harmony that this first departure of a member of the group occurs in true friendship and deep mutual respect. After eight and a half years of invoking supreme darkness with Triptykon onstage and in the studio, Norman has indicated his desire to explore different musical avenues in the future. It is a wish we fully understand, of course, but also one we bemoan on a personal level.

We all wish Norman the very best for any and all of his future endeavours. He will forever remain one of us.

Triptykon is thus now looking for a new drummer, before continuing work on the group’s third album and returning to the world’s stages. We are taking the required technical capabilities for granted, and we are completely open with regard to age and female and male applicants. Of decisive importance to us, however, are uniqueness, an unrestricted musical horizon, creativity, artistic courage, a stable and professional personality, and an appearance that reflects the group’s music and unique historic background.

Interested parties may contact Triptykon through this e-mail address:triptykonswitzerland@gmx.ch

[Please note that this e-mail address will only respond to serious inquiries regarding the above mentioned topic.]

DiWulf Publishing House is very excited to announce the October 31g release of the debut book from author Freddy Alva, Urban Styles: Graffiti in New York Hardcore. This 350 page tome is an ode to the New York of the late 1970s and early ’80s and showcases a vibrant merging of two uniquely New York subcultures: Hip-Hop’s hallmark of graffiti art and its influence over and incorporation into the emerging Hardcore Punk scene. Packed with over 180 photos, most of which have never been seen before, Urban Styles chronicles a time when youth culture ran rampant through the city and its boroughs; an anarchist’s dream of subterranean expression that combined the visual aesthetics of the established Hip-Hop culture and the sonic bombast of New York’s nascent version of Hardcore Punk.

Through a series of in-depth interviews with graff writers and musicians, and an exhaustive amount of research, Freddy compiles a compelling history told by those who were at the forefront of both movements. Told in vivid firsthand accounts, Urban Styles is a journey of connections that stretch from the train yards to the Sunday all-ages matinees; from Hip-Hop to Hardcore. It is the story of disenfranchised youth, the city that bred their expressionism, and the cross-pollination and far-reaching influence of two dominant subcultures. Urban Styles: Graffiti in New York Hardcore documents an exciting time in New York’s artistic history; a pre-Internet world when the city was still dangerous and the delineation of criminals and artists was not so clear.

Alva, already a noted historian and documenter of the New York Hardcore scene, constructs a gritty, multi-cultural narrative told through the experiences and memories of such notable gaff writers and musicians as Sacha Jenkins, Sergio DEEM Vega (Quicksand/Deftones), Mackie HYPER Jayson (Cro-Mags/Bad Brains), Chaka Malik (Burn/Orange 9mm), MQ, and Danny EZEC Diablo, among others.
Scheduled for release on October 31st 2017, Urban Styles is the second book to be published by DiWulf, the independent imprint whose inaugural release No Slam Dancing, No Stage Diving, No Spikes: An Oral History of the Legendary City Gardens, went on to sell over 5,000 copies through two sold-out printings, and is still available in e-book and print-on-demand.

“The World Is Yours” encourage ARCH ENEMY on new rager

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Friday, July 14, 2017 at 1:25 PM (PST)

ARCH ENEMY have risen once again and are ready to accelerate at full force as they unleash the masterful new single, “The World Is Yours”, taken from their forthcoming album, Will To Power, due out on September 8 via CENTURY MEDIA RECORDS worldwide.

Mastermind Michael Amott comments, “We’ve been hard at work on the new album for a while now and we’re proud to present the first taste of new Arch Enemy music in over three years with our new single and video, ‘The World Is Yours’! This was the first song I wrote for the upcoming ‘Will To Power’ album and Daniel (Erlandsson, drums) helped me arrange and finish it up. One of many songs we co-wrote and co-produced this time around. We had a blast recording together with the full band in the south of Sweden and then mixing with Jens Bogren, who did a superb mix and mastering – in my opinion even surpassing the epic sound on our previous record, ‘War Eternal’. People that have heard this song in particular are saying it’s got the classic anthemic Arch Enemy vibe going on, and I think they might be right about that… Looking forward to playing it live on stage later this summer!”

The massive debut track, which can be heard and seen in their rousing music video HERE , will be offered as an instant download with all digital pre-orders and is also available on all streaming platforms.

Head to http://willtopower.centurymedia.com to find all digital and physical pre-order options.

Marduk announce North American Fall Tour

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at 4:16 PM (PST)

Black metal agitators Marduk will buck the odds and  return to North America once again as they have revealed dates this fall for the “Frontschwein North America Tour: Part 2”. Fresh off an Antifa controversy, it will be interesting to see if this tour goes off without a hitch. I personally hate anti-semitism but Marduk have said they before that they write about the horror of war and  Morgan Steinmeyer Håkansson has been nowhere near as obtuse or opaque on the subject when pressed as more evasive bands. Lemmy sang about WW2 and collected a wide array of historical stuff from different sides of the conflict and he was not a Nazi, for example.

Honestly I am more concerned by Incantation on this tour who I have often dug the music of but have heard various rumors about regarding closeted racism that I hope are not true. If anything, Marduk underscore how terrifying the world can be.

That said, I happen to really enjoy Marduk’s music and am not generally fond of boosting things I think are maybe problematic without at least mentioning it. Marduk are not on that list and Abysmal Dawn fucking rule.

The Haunted release “Brute Force” music video

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Friday, June 23, 2017 at 10:21 AM (PST)

The Haunted have released a song from upcoming ninth studio album Strength In Numbers. Recorded at Parlour Studios in the UK with producer Russ Russell (Napalm Death, Dimmu Borgir, The Exploited), the album will be released worldwide via CENTURY MEDIA RECORDS on August 25, 2017. The song continues the band’s recent trend of focusing more solely on their aggression, since the return of vocalist Marco Aro (who is a screamer). I’m especially liking Jonas’ bass attack on this one, giving the track extra punch.

THE HAUNTED checked in to comment on the track as follows:
We’re very excited to finally be able to air our first single from the new album Strength In Numbers and let it set the tone for the brutality of the album. “Brute Force” is one of those songs written in the early stage of making the album and shows our hunger to make new music, uncompromising, unforgiving and just to the point.”

Grave Pleasures sign to Century Media, “Motherblood” looms

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Thursday, June 22, 2017 at 4:24 PM (PST)

Century Media has wisely signed Grave Pleasures, one of the best bands in the world right now. Arguably the current buzz band of death rock (and actually really good), Grave Pleasures return with Motherblood this year. Recently the band has been supporting Killing Joke and has been molting into a new era.

Motherblood was recorded at Orgone Studios in the UK (Ghost, Paradise Lost, Ulver). It has been scheduled to a worldwide release for late September/early October 2017.

Mat McNerney comments on the albums concept and music:

“Like the great sacrament of ancient times that was the blood sacrifice of the mother, we too have laid down our most holy flesh at your feet. This record, which is a bold re-definition of death-rock and our totemic challenge to our pretenders, shall be our most grand and sordid testament. If you have never danced with the skeletons, then this album is your gateway drug to all the nihilistic pleasures of the grave. Apocalyptic post-punk never sounded so desperately bleak and wild yet never grinned so maniacally and writhed so fervently with tongues that whip the tombs. The Kali figure of our cover is the eternal icon of nuclear fear. She presides over the religion of an apocalyptic future. A desolate future we proudly celebrate with caustic music of the most furious punk. Come imbibe and wash your mind in our Motherblood. We’re dancing in the lion’s mouth. The elevator only goes down.”

Body Count release gory and funny video for “Here I Go Again”

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at 11:32 AM (PST)

Body Count have a new video, perhaps their goriest ever. “Here I Go Again” will likely offend many but I for one found it to be hysterical and entertaining. Obviously Ice-T chopping up grandmas is way over the top and not meant to be taken seriously. The slow creepy voice narration from homie is also a lot of fun. You can see Ice hamming it up being both overly menacing and also making freaked out faces throughout as things get bloodier and bloodier.

In addition to the new video for “Here I Go Again”, BODY COUNT will be making their long awaited return to the stage in North America next month. The band will play their first show in the states since releasing Bloodlust on July 15th at the Chicago Open Air festival taking place at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, IL.

Virtuoso mega mind Devin Townsend has released a fantastic lyric video for amazing and inspiring track “Offer Your Light” from recent DTP album Transcendence.  May cause head banging yet also staring hopefully at the horizon wondering how to make the most of your life and conquer your demons. Contact your doctor right away if you experience painful urination. That is totally unrelated to how rad this jam is.
