Marduk announce North American Fall Tour

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at 4:16 PM (PST)

Black metal agitators Marduk will buck the odds and  return to North America once again as they have revealed dates this fall for the “Frontschwein North America Tour: Part 2”. Fresh off an Antifa controversy, it will be interesting to see if this tour goes off without a hitch. I personally hate anti-semitism but Marduk have said they before that they write about the horror of war and  Morgan Steinmeyer Håkansson has been nowhere near as obtuse or opaque on the subject when pressed as more evasive bands. Lemmy sang about WW2 and collected a wide array of historical stuff from different sides of the conflict and he was not a Nazi, for example.

Honestly I am more concerned by Incantation on this tour who I have often dug the music of but have heard various rumors about regarding closeted racism that I hope are not true. If anything, Marduk underscore how terrifying the world can be.

That said, I happen to really enjoy Marduk’s music and am not generally fond of boosting things I think are maybe problematic without at least mentioning it. Marduk are not on that list and Abysmal Dawn fucking rule.

The Haunted release “Brute Force” music video

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Friday, June 23, 2017 at 10:21 AM (PST)

The Haunted have released a song from upcoming ninth studio album Strength In Numbers. Recorded at Parlour Studios in the UK with producer Russ Russell (Napalm Death, Dimmu Borgir, The Exploited), the album will be released worldwide via CENTURY MEDIA RECORDS on August 25, 2017. The song continues the band’s recent trend of focusing more solely on their aggression, since the return of vocalist Marco Aro (who is a screamer). I’m especially liking Jonas’ bass attack on this one, giving the track extra punch.

THE HAUNTED checked in to comment on the track as follows:
We’re very excited to finally be able to air our first single from the new album Strength In Numbers and let it set the tone for the brutality of the album. “Brute Force” is one of those songs written in the early stage of making the album and shows our hunger to make new music, uncompromising, unforgiving and just to the point.”

Grave Pleasures sign to Century Media, “Motherblood” looms

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Thursday, June 22, 2017 at 4:24 PM (PST)

Century Media has wisely signed Grave Pleasures, one of the best bands in the world right now. Arguably the current buzz band of death rock (and actually really good), Grave Pleasures return with Motherblood this year. Recently the band has been supporting Killing Joke and has been molting into a new era.

Motherblood was recorded at Orgone Studios in the UK (Ghost, Paradise Lost, Ulver). It has been scheduled to a worldwide release for late September/early October 2017.

Mat McNerney comments on the albums concept and music:

“Like the great sacrament of ancient times that was the blood sacrifice of the mother, we too have laid down our most holy flesh at your feet. This record, which is a bold re-definition of death-rock and our totemic challenge to our pretenders, shall be our most grand and sordid testament. If you have never danced with the skeletons, then this album is your gateway drug to all the nihilistic pleasures of the grave. Apocalyptic post-punk never sounded so desperately bleak and wild yet never grinned so maniacally and writhed so fervently with tongues that whip the tombs. The Kali figure of our cover is the eternal icon of nuclear fear. She presides over the religion of an apocalyptic future. A desolate future we proudly celebrate with caustic music of the most furious punk. Come imbibe and wash your mind in our Motherblood. We’re dancing in the lion’s mouth. The elevator only goes down.”

Body Count release gory and funny video for “Here I Go Again”

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at 11:32 AM (PST)

Body Count have a new video, perhaps their goriest ever. “Here I Go Again” will likely offend many but I for one found it to be hysterical and entertaining. Obviously Ice-T chopping up grandmas is way over the top and not meant to be taken seriously. The slow creepy voice narration from homie is also a lot of fun. You can see Ice hamming it up being both overly menacing and also making freaked out faces throughout as things get bloodier and bloodier.

In addition to the new video for “Here I Go Again”, BODY COUNT will be making their long awaited return to the stage in North America next month. The band will play their first show in the states since releasing Bloodlust on July 15th at the Chicago Open Air festival taking place at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, IL.

Virtuoso mega mind Devin Townsend has released a fantastic lyric video for amazing and inspiring track “Offer Your Light” from recent DTP album Transcendence.  May cause head banging yet also staring hopefully at the horizon wondering how to make the most of your life and conquer your demons. Contact your doctor right away if you experience painful urination. That is totally unrelated to how rad this jam is.

Iced Earth have never been the most subtle of bands, known for many over the top heavy metal songs that are large in scope. They are firmly in the Iron Maiden tradition and fans love them for it. You can pre order new record Incorruptible HERE and we highly suggest you do if you’re a fan of classic, huge metal. The band really put a lot into this album, even perhaps more than usual.

Tribulation have a few records, but it was the darkly romantic and brooding The Children Of The Night that thrust them to new heights atop gothic death ramparts and crusty crenulations. Truly one of the more captivating bands of our current age, refining like blood wine.

Tribulation recently published the following statement about the departure of drummer Jakob Ljungberg, who had been with the group since the album The Formulas Of Death:
“As the summer in the year of their lord 2017 draws near and the world in the north is again fully starting to wake from its slumber we, on the other hand, are forced to face an inevitable end in the departure of our drummer Jakob Ljungberg who has decided to leave the band. We have spent the last five years together through pain to heaven, in chaos to bliss! It’s been such a strange, wonderful, tiring and inspiring time and we would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for making this time the most important in the history of the band. We surely couldn’t have done it without you. We were like brothers even before the time of Tribulation and we certainly will be in the time after! Make sure to check out Jakob’s unique and most excellent band Second Sun (https://www.facebook.com/Secondsunswe/) where he sings and plays guitar!”

Jakob Ljungberg also commented as follows: “It is with a heavy heart that I leave Tribulation. These last years have been among the best in my life, but they wore me out and now I have to continue life on different paths. Thanks to everyone involved – you made this journey spectacular, thanks to everyone that came up and said hi – it meant the world to me, thanks to everyone who believed in me – you made me believe in myself. Jonathan, Adam and Johannes: I love you. “The end of nights we tried to die – this is the end.””

But as every end is also a new beginning, TRIBULATION have already secured a new drummer in Oscar Leander and have further good news to spread: “After this period of silence, renewal and contemplation the time has now come to give you the new Tribulation! We have now fully immersed ourselves in the making of a new album that will be recorded at summer’s end. We are very pleased to announce that Oscar Leander (previously in Deathstars) is our new drummer. He will make his first appearance with us on Muskelrock now on Thursday, June 1st! Are you ready? We are!”

Stay alert for TRIBULATION’s new studio album which is planned to be released early 2018.

Fear Those Who Fear Him is the third and hotly coveted new dark metal power emission from the extreme metal warlocks of Vallenfyre. This song is not about any hobnobbery with spirits and sprites, though the band do have serious British mojo. No, this crusher deals hard in real world problems facing us right now.

Guitarist/vocalist Greg Mackintosh (Paradise Lost) comments:
Nihilist is about those who take their ridiculous holy book seriously and carry it out to the letter. In light of recent events it is dedicated to the innocent victims of the Manchester attack.

Scheduled for worldwide release via CENTURY MEDIA RECORDS on June 2, 2017, Fear Those Who Fear Him is an unforgiving musical mixture of death, doom, grind, and crust offering 12 ferocious new tracks. The album is available for pre-order on CD, LP and digital download at http://smarturl.it/VallenfyreFTWFH

Band Spotlight: Body Count

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Sunday, May 14, 2017 at 6:54 PM (PST)

Body Count are not our latest band spotlight because you don’t know who they are. Hell, they are infamous! How many rock bands still scare crusty old white people in 2017? Powerflo and Prophets Of Rage are helping bring actually good rap metal back, but Body Count hit the biggest grand slam of late with Bloodlust. The thrash act have been around since “Cop Killer” was the most controversial song in the world, but recently soared back to prominence in the metal scene with topical songs capturing current headlines. “Civil War”, “No Lives Matter” and the new album’s strongest cut “Black Hoodie” – paired with cameos from Dave Mustaine, Max Cavalera and Randy Blythe plus charismatic spoken intros from Ice-T – have secured the band respect well beyond a novelty status they never deserved. Bloodlust has been out a few months now and remains in heavy rotation for many of us.

Theatrical tour machines In This Moment have seemingly named their next offering Ritual. Some artwork was revealed today and fans are freaking out. “River Of Fire”, a new song the band has been playing live, was fucking awesome when I saw them in Albany (one of the biggest highlights of the set). More news as we get it.

After a strong finish on a series of tour dates across the UK and Central Europe alongside heavy-hitters’ Meshuggah and Arch Enemy respectively, Swedish thrash metallers’ THE HAUNTED have been busy completing the recording and mixing process of their upcoming, 9th studio album effort. Recorded at Parlour Studios in the UK with producer Russ Russell (Napalm Death, Dimmu Borgir, The Exploited), the album is entitled Strength In Numbers and will be released worldwide via Century Media Records on August 25, 2017.

THE HAUNTED‘s guitarist Ola Englund has checked in with the following comment:“Working on “Strength In Numbers” with Russ Russell as an engineer and producer has been an incredible experience. His attitude and positivity has helped us to truly do our best when recording. He’s just a killer guy to be around!”, before adding:“All the tracking for the album has been completed and Russ is right in the middle of mixing and mastering it. And from the early mixes I’ve heard, it’s shaping up to be insanely heavy. No clean singing, no banjo, no pickup trucks…so fans of country music are gonna hate it, haha! Seriously: Heads are gonna roll. In a good way…”
