Taking a moment from perusing the House Of Harlow 1960 crystal collection and being amused at the Rose Quartz Crystal Statement Ear Jackets name. They are a nice design but the merging of “crystal” and “statement” screams hippie + bougie to me in a way that I am sure was psychically intentional. No shade, Nicole Richie. That’s how you get ’em. Not a bad collection, sis!

Anyway, back here in Riot-ville to tell you unwashed weirdos the lowdown on some sounds.

Necropanther‘s much awaited The Doomed City is streaming HERE. The Colorado metallers mean business on this Logan’s Run inspired riff fest. I especially like the absurdly whiplash-ready track “Cathedral” which ought to appeal to both fans of Power Trip, old gargle scream Skeletonwitch and Pantera in fairly equal measure. Somewhere Farrah Fawcett is windmilling like Corpsegrinder and The production on this and the growls are just…is evil overused as a descriptor in metal? The stream comes in advance of the record’s official release this Friday November 15th.

Following a few December gigs, stoner icons Sleep will be on indefinite hiatus. I never expected another record, let alone the brilliance of The Sciences. I mean, it isn’t hard for dudes as rad at rocking as Sleep to make a good album, but that record was “chef’s kiss”.  This Chicago date with Big Business looks pretty sick, for a pretty penny. I’d go, though. Lot worse things you could do with that money and you probably have enough weed already if this interests you, fam.

Seriously though, much thanks to Sleep for inspiring so many and keeping it real across the vastnesses of here, there and wherever. Hails.

Hey kids. Just taking a break from The Mandalorian to tell you that gravel throated sludge icon Kirk Windstein has a solo album Dream In Motion coming next year (allegedly also featuring a Jethro Tull cover I am a little wary of, no offense to the big lug). Heavy Consequence has a premiere of the first video for the title track, which almost makes up for their ghastly top 25 albums of the decade list the other day (hahaha). Not sure yet if Windstein is part of the Down reunion show announced for next year, but somebody knows.

Can I just add that as usual Kirk is still the daddy of all the best riffs?

As for his decision to record a solo LP, Windstein states:
“The idea to record a solo album started out as, ‘I’m going to do an acoustic record,’ but that’s just so cliché, you know? Nothing against that, but it’s been done a million times. But I had been thinking about doing something a little more mellow for some time. It’s something I wanted to do, I needed to do. It’s another side of my songwriting, my personality. It’s another side of me. It’s something I did for myself. It’s not even that this isn’t heavy, because there are bits and pieces that are very heavy. But even the heaviest riff on this is something I couldn’t really do in Crowbar. If some Crowbar fans don’t like it, I’ll understand. But I hope people dig it.”

Unless you are a huge snob with a giant stick up your ass, you can admit that In This Moment are one of the most enjoyable live bands out there with an over the top production and stage presence as well as huge sounding tunes that blow away most bands these days. You will always get your money’s worth and leave entertained. I would go see them basically anytime with zero hesitation. Maria rules and runs a great band.

Big tour announcement today for 2020 as In This Moment announce dates with the loved or reviled Black Veil Brides (guess what? They also rule, haters stay pressed). This is gonna be a bad ass and BIG tour. Ded and Raven Black are the lucky openers here. Get pumped.

Here is my fave In This Moment tune “River Of Fire” to satiate you until you go to this tour.

Here’s a little Black Veil also for you crying hardcore kid snobs. Hahaha. \m/

Raven Black release” He Is The One” lyric video

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Friday, November 8, 2019 at 4:33 PM (PST)

Wow, today really was a treasure trove of new metal riches with Ozzy, Sepultura and King Diamond all releasing some outstanding material that knocked me on my ass. I also want to steer you in the direction of a fun band we like around here who those of you who can take a little camp with your metal (and remember kids, you can’t have many a decent horror film without kids at a camp, haha).

Dark alt metal rock force Raven Black have released their charmingly deranged new single “He Is The One” as a lyric video. The seasick swing of this possessed sounding song will make you run to hide in the cupboard or under the bed from your demons…but there may be no place to hide? Muhahahahahah! Pre Order the band’s upcoming record HERE.

RAVEN BLACK will also be joining up with STATIC-X, DOPE, and WEDNESDAY 13 on the second leg of the 20th Anniversary Wisconsin Death Trip Tour / Memorial to Wayne Static Tour beginning today in Austin, TX and wrapping up December 8 in Colorado Springs, CO.

“We are incredibly excited to also be performing on the second leg of the Static-X Wisconsin death trip 20th anniversary tour Featuring co-headliners Mushroomhead and Drowning Pool and support from + DOPE + & Wednesday 13!” – RAVEN BLACK

Ozzy releases bad ass new song “Under The Graveyard”

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Friday, November 8, 2019 at 5:19 AM (PST)

Any morning when I can genuinely get goosebumps from “that Ozzy feeling” is a great day. I can truly say that hearing “Under The Graveyard” today had me shook and it was so awesome to get that stoked by a new Ozzy Osbourne tune to this degree for the first time in awhile. This is definitely my favorite song he has put out in some time and it was pretty thrilling to experience for the first time, the rush of nostalgia and love for metal’s king paired with the excitement of hearing something new and cool that could still hang beside past glories. Decide for yourself below.

If every song on the forthcoming 2020 release Ordinary Man is as good as this we are in really great shape, bat biters. No Zakk on this song but it does feature a crazy line up of producer/guitarist Andrew Watt, bassist Duff McKagan (Guns N’ Roses) and drummer Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers). Ozzy credits Andrew with giving him the strength to make an album and after a near decade of wanting some killer new solo Ozzy, we ought to be thankful. This shit is already better than the final Sabbath record, honestly.

Internal Bleeding has a busy 2020 scheduled, and it kicks off with the first of many tours they will be doing during the year. This two week headlining tour will see the band traveling from California to Texas and back, and hitting many stops along the way. “We’re really excited to get out and see our West Coast fans,” remarked guitarist Chris McCarthy, “They are some of the best in the world.”

The band will be supported by a solid lineup of west coast bands including Logistic Slaughter, Embryonic Devourment and Depulsed. Dates are below.

“Going dark” in theatre speak means a show is closed down whereas it is “lit” when the production is up and running. Some things manage to be both lit and embrace the dark at the same time (Kerli’s recent confident electro-spooky wub wubbing  “Where The Dark Things Are” track from the awesome as hell Shadow Works album comes to mind). Tribulation, one of the most darkly theatrical and grandiose yet no nonsense musical bands in any era of metal, certainly also could count as both “lit” and very dark, indeed. You might even call them creatures of the night.

Now Tribulation are unveiling their first official live album, the marvelous new Alive & Dead at Södra TeaternThis is a major moment for this acclaimed band from Sweden who have wowed so many with their deep dives into the inner fears of humanity.  Invited by ex-Nirvana 2002 vocalist and curator Orvar Säfström, who served as master of ceremonies, Tribulation’s first-ever Södra Teatern (Southern Theatre) main hall gig was a very special night of black celebration.

Founding member Adam Zaars took the time to speak to me through mists of swirling terror (actually through email) to attempt to illumine what the chemistry, moment and import of this release means to the frighteningly talented band behind it. Read MORE below.

Hey gang. Feeling the cooling positivity of that day after blue wave feeling and sipping some black coffee. Finally checking out this Cro-Mags (Harley version) promo from the remnants of Victory and I have to say that I don’t really understand why anyone says it sucks. “From The Grave” with Phil from Motorhead is a ripping rad rager and the vocals do sound ferocious if not my favorite voice for the band. I am way more of a fan of the John and Mackie version and wish they could somehow just dead this shit in the name of PMA and form the tightest , ugly heavy and illest combo going but after the violence and all the hate I understand why it is two distinct camps. It is sad, but I am gonna try and keep an open heart and love both.

Been going through a lot of crazy shit the last month with a very crummy landlord situation and family stuff as well as the year winding down so haven’t had the gusto to do too much self-insertion into any posts, but I wanted to thank you all who continue to support the site and also in the scene and general world who believe in ourselves and one another. We can heal a lot and restore balance to the force or justice or progress as a scene or wider society if we can process our pains and biases and try to move things in a productive and healing direction while still having respect for oneself and boundaries. I have to believe for all the good and bad days we all have that a lot of us underneath it all are better people than not or at least want to be. Sending you all love and horns tonight. Don’t mind me, I finally finished reading The Elfstones of Shannara and the sacrifice of Amberle to bond  with the land as the next tree protector to shelter and cradle life through synergy has affected me and made me think about interconnectedness.

Anyway, on to some evil ass gnarly metal news- hahaha!

It has been a big Season Of Mist week around here so let’s not stop now! Defiled from Japan have a new album announced. This death metal group rip so fucking hard, it is truly a spectacle of unhinged wonder. The band will release their new studio album, Infinite Regress on January 24, 2020. The album art and track-list can be found below. Additionally, the band have revealed “Tragedy,” the first single from the effort. “Tragedy” can be heard below.

DEFILED comment: “The day has finally come! We are so incredibly proud to announce our new record, ‘Infinite Regress.’ The album will be out on 24th Jan 2020 via our home of Season of Mist. Please give a listen to our first official premiere song ‘Tragedy’ and we hope you guys enjoy it. Cheers!”

I don’t know about you but I think “Tragedy” fucking rules and love the brainy intro that devolves into fierce speed and then interesting slower deathy kinda tribal thud before back to a full fledged powerful attack. And some chunky ass lead parts amidst the growling chaos! This band is so cool and I really like their arrangements and clear dedication to not giving a shit about trends.

‘Infinite Regress’ can be pre-ordered in various formats HERE.

CARACH ANGREN from are currently in the studio recording the follow up to the exquisitely titled Dance and Laugh Amongst The Rotten release. This new effort will be the 6th horror infused black metal theatrical endeavor from the twisted act of geniuses from Netherlands.

The band comment: “After many incredible tours meeting our dedicated fans around the globe, we finally return to the studio! Over the past two years a lot of creativity and effort has already flown into preparing our sixth monstrous full length album. For recording drums, bass and guitars we return to familiar grounds, working with the talented Patrick Damiani at his Tidal Wave Studio in Germany while vocals and orchestral arrangements are being prepared in our own crypt. For the mix of the album we welcome a new force, namely Robert Carranza (MARILYN MANSON), who’s work up until now has impressed us very much. Get ready for another chapter of horror!”

More details as we get them. In the meantime…

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Monday, November 4, 2019 at 8:34 AM (PST)

Here is some cool and somewhat different news for your Monday (other than that Richard Spencer is a POS nazi and wbk). Apple TV’s new series “See,” starring Jason Momoa (‘Aquaman,’ ‘Game of Thrones,’ etc.), features a special appearance from ARCHSPIRE vocalist Oli Peters and drummer Spencer Prewett on the pilot episode! Peters showcases his signature gunfire vocals in a scene in which Momoa hand-selected the band to appear. The episode ‘Godflame’ can be seen at THIS LOCATION.

Very glad to see more good stuff happen for one of the coolest bands in metal!
