Album Review: Jucifer – “District Of Dystopia”

Jucifer‘s District of Dystopia is just what the world needs right now. “Non Gratum anus Rodentum” opens this up with lo-fi Melvins/Buzzov-en glory and ragged precision. This shit is so killer. In some ways this is the ultimate Jucifer release, since it is the closest to their ever-shifting live experience you could get withouta lasso and a tornado. Nomadic Fortress is releasing this fury of 4 track blast and doom, choked and peaking vocals
to make Converge blush on “It Can’t Be Helped” and the merciless crashing cymbals of Edgar Livengood. That dude is such a whirlwind of beast to watch drum.

Bunnybrains are playing in my town tonight with DJ Lunar Moss (what a great fuckin’ name). “Narcissist” is hissing outof my speakers with menace as deadly as any Venom record and I kind of want to kill or hump something. Life has some good moments.

From the press release: Jucifer’s District of Dystopia examines the particular dystopia native to our nation’s capital.  With homage to both D.C. punk protest tradition and the American Dream itself — in all her battered majesty — the band marks its 21st year with a razor sharp blast of aggression honed by world weary wisdom.

I can think of no better topic after their extensive foray into Russia after a long French romance (a rad double album, haha), than to set their eyes
back on the USA for a punk rock school lesson. The Liberty bell is ringing somewhere in Purgatory.A house of cards, indeed.

“Red Summer” is a slogging, fuzzed out ultimate vibe to everywhere that evokes the scurry of pedestrians hurrying to work, the frustration of Congressional gridlock and the entropic dog and pony of crony capitalism/mixed economics. Buildings decay and paint peels and the lightning bolt aims for the White House one more time cuz everybody can be bought.

Amber sounds brutal on this and there is the immediacy of any backyard or basement show jam around a burn barrel, cheap beer cans or a pile of dirt and concrete blocks. “The Object of Power” is straight black metal grind meets slug metal, a weird vortex of colliding force fields and politics, scene boundaries and signifiers.

Cattle Decap to live debut new tune at Housecore Horror

Cattle Decapitation will be performing a brand new song off their upcoming 2015 Metal Blade release at the mid day show of the Housecore Horror Film Festival. The show will be at Midway’s on Friday, 10/24 with Unearth, Brian Posehn, Origin, fellow San Diegan and friend Author & Punisher, and Evil United! The band is looking forward to debuting new material for the festival crowd. Later that same evening, Cattle Decapitation‘s vocalist Travis Ryan will be performing vocals with Wizards of Gore (the legendary gore thrash act Rigor Mortis under a different name) for his all time favorite Rigor Mortis track “Foaming at the Mouth”, which will mark this the band’s first time playing the song in over 25 years!

The best thing I’ve heard all day is Noisem‘s cover of Slayer‘s “Aggressive Perfector” plus a Terrorizer and Cannibal Corpse over on the A389 label bandcamp. Arsonists Get All The Girls announce tour with Rings of Saturn

Bay Area extreme metal and self proclaimed aliencore band Rings of Saturn are headlining the Face Implosion Tour. In support will be Ontario’s prog/groove metal Auras and San Fransisco’s tech death metallers Ænimus. This tour will be sick as fuck cretins. Go forth and die.

Full Of Hell to collaborate with Merzbow

Powerviolence/harsh noise sculptors, FULL OF HELL, have just confirmed a barrage of upcoming recording and tour plans, including new tours on both the North American and European continents, as well as a joint release with renowned noise metal architect, Merzbow.

Following up their 2013-released sophomore LP, Rudiments Of Mutilation, and recently-released split LP with Integrity’s Dwid Hellion and his experimental/noise outfit Psywarfare, this Summer, FULL OF HELL will continue to explore their more caustic noise heredity by recording a fully collaborative recording with Japan’s longtime lord of noise/electronics, Merzbow. The album will see vinyl release in North America via A389 Recordings, a European vinyl release via Stab/Repeat Records, and CD/digital delivery via Profound Lore Records. Additional details on this undoubtedly demoralizing recording will be available upon its imminent studio creation in the coming months.

Additionally, FULL OF HELL will take the action back to the streets on another brutalizing tour across Europe for over a month, from today, Tuesday, June 3rd through May 7th, joined by Disciples Of Christ.

And this just in; this August, FULL OF HELL will destroy the West Coast US with A389 labelmates, Noisem, and headlining longtime political hardcore/grind act, DropDead. This eight-city run will tear a trail from Seattle to Southern California between August 22nd and 29th.

Southern Lord Recordings is beyond stoked to broadcast that influential, visionary metal act, today is the day , has joined with the label’s roster for the release of their massively anticipated tenth studio album later this year.


Early this year, TODAY IS THE DAY‘s newest lineup was announced, as the foundation of the then unnamed album was taking shape. Guitarist/vocalist Steve Austin welcomed Sean Conkling (Regression, Burn Your Halo, Sprawl) on bass as well as returning member Jeff Lohrber (Enabler, ex-Harlots), Lohrber having previously handled touring drum duties for TITD many times in the past. Conkling and Lohrber tracked most of their sessions in December and January at the founding frontman’s own Recording and Mastering Studio in Maine. Since, Austin has been painstakingly layering guitars, vocals and more, and as the final sessions for TODAY IS THE DAY‘s tenth studio full-length will be taking place in June, the band happily unveils the name of the impending LP, as Animal Mother.



Southern Lord owner Greg Anderson on the union, “Southern Lord is deeply honored to be working with TODAY IS THE DAY. Steve Austin has been a long time force in the underground and we’re stoked to now be a small part of the TITD legacy.”


As per the album title, Austin offers, “Animal Mother means the embodiment of the prophetic gift of the shaman; it is the shaman’s visionary power, which is able to penetrate the past and future.” Early this year the frontman warned the public that the album is “a fifteen-song rampage of bloody carnage fueled by hate, love and vile, raw emotion,” continuing, “I feel it is my finest work to this date. It is the most complex and HEAVY record we have ever made. This is real — no bullshit Protools crap; just pure violent energy and real band songwriting in the middle of the woods in Maine. It lies somewhere between Temple of The Morning Star and In The Eyes of God, and Jeff’s playing is beyond incredible. I was determined to push the limits in complexity, musicianship, and creativity as far as we could and I feel we have put together a record that narrates the horror and pain that we have been living through.”

Interview: Garin Rosen of Arsonists Get All The Girls

Arsonists Get All The Girls is a band that can actually fulfill a crowd funding campaign. Twice. After four albums with Century Media, they went out on their own and haven’t looked back. Founding drummer Garin Rosen hit me with a solid dose of what exactly went into and came out of their overly successfully crowd sourced album they released last year. They also scored a new van back in March, thanks to a still loyal fanbase. Before the funding, their future was unclear and had this album not been funded, we might not have these nutjobs out on the road in a new van toting a sporadically vicious new album, Listen to the Color.

This line up did not fuck around. Each band hit the minuscule stage and went straight for the neck. Seven bands, both local and national, absolutely lit the room up, each with their own unequivocal performance and flair. Santa Cruz, California’s Arsonists Get All The Girls helmed this massive tour, with The Last Ten Seconds of Life, Beyond The Shore, homies Seeker, and Your Chance to Die opening the show. Refuge and Airismine ran the local New York City support, bringing with them a slew of fans to flood the intimate Club Europa in Brooklyn, New York.

Trap Them present “Salted Crypts” for all you Blissfuckers

Trap Them are at times the best live band in extreme music. The gloomy and sarcastic hardcore band have finally released new caustic sounds for the devoted. Crowbar and a new Trap Them single both in one day! Is a piano gonna fall on me and ruin it or something? Fist up to the wrist in the ass of awesome!

Anyway, Trap Them are releasing a new record called (wait for it)…Blissfucker. Maybe this is a statement about ignorant bliss in our pop culture or a statement that Trap The, will fuck up your bliss. I dunno. But I do know that Trap Them give hope that hardcore with meaning isn’t dead. I just watched the Cameron Crowe Pearl Jam Twenty film on Netflix (which I suggest all you embittered metal heads go check out because while it aint Entombed it is very inspiring). It reminded me of why everyday I want to write about music or make it until I die. Music should be fearless and made for the right reasons, an extension of friendship and community. Trap Them also inspire me to feel that strongly. I wish more bands (and people in general) gave more of a shit.

Napalm Death announce Roadburn Festival EP; Cardiacs cover

English grindcore godfathers Napalm Death have announced that they are releasing a cover of “To Go Off And Things” by the Cardiacs.

The Cardiacs driving force, Tim Smith, is the beneficiary of the money made from the downloads of “To Go Off And Things”.

Napalm Death bassist Shane Embury had this to say on the release of the song,

“Since I was blessed with being introduced to Cardiacs way back in 1986 they have been one of my favorite bands of all time! Getting to meet and become friends with Tim Smith, the musical genius behind it all, over the years was an added bonus. Tim always struck me as a person with a massive heart, who had a very pure and innocent view of the world in which we live in – something i totally related to, as the world can be a dark place – he radiated happiness. We shared many fun and elaborate conversations after CARDIACS shows in the early 90’s and I loved every minute of every conversation with him. I could go on and on for hours about how amazing his music is and the immense influence it has had on my life but suffice to say this cover of “To Go Off And Things” that we have recorded is in tribute to the brilliance that is Tim Smith – it is the least we can do for a man who has given us so much.

Tim has unfortunately been severely unwell for a few years now and we hope with this recording made available to everyone for download on our bandcamp site for only £1 (you can pay more if your heart so desires!) we can help raise some money to go towards Tim’s rehabilitation! Today Is The Day‘s landmark Sadness Will Prevail turns 14 later this year. Almost good for a learner’s permit.

Catching the Steve Austin-helmed act at a period where they synthesized early WILLPOWER experimental Am Rep and indie space rock influences with CBGB’s rage, welding it to RATT-style REACH THE SKY balladry (just kidding)…the early traces of the violent, dissonant metal and hard rock act they have become pre Axis of Eden but post Temple of the Morning Star‘s satanic themed Manson trip out. The Sadness Will Prevail 2xLP is grind, noise, ambient, straight up rock n roll. All that. Some tinkly piano as well. More a triumph of will over pain, a love letter to the blues always being a truest musical form that transcends in the end.

Brutal Truth’s new video will “fry your brain”

I’m gonna pretend Brutal Truth aren’t breaking up and instead just focus on the crazy Acid Mothers Grind-Gasm of their new video. BT has unveiled the brand new video for the track “The Stroy.” The video is being exclusively premiered worldwide today via Terrorizer Magazine’s website, who describes the video as “a creepy and atmospheric journey that sees our grind heroes zoning out and and embarking on an astral dirge that’ll give you nightmares for weeks.”

“Stroy”  is taken from the scathing recent split with Bastard Noise, entitled The Axiom of Post Inhumanity, released by Relapse in November. The split album, drummer Rich Hoak promised, would “fry your brain”, a view that many reviews agreed with. Combining over four decades of grinding noise dominance, The Axiom of Post Inhumanity is a long overdue pairing of extreme music veterans that is sure to push the limits of even the most masochistic listeners. Both the CD and LP formats of the release contain entirely different sets of music from both bands while the digital version collects all of the tracks onto one compilation.
