Finally some news from Blackguard, one of the best bands in modern metal and most down to Earth. They have parted ways with Victory Records. The label still has Wretched and Sister Sin, among others, but Blackguard was a great signing. That said, their pending STORM release was taking forever so if this is what it takes to finally hear it, I’m all for it.

Metal icons ARCH ENEMY are proud to announce that guitar legend Jeff Loomis (ex-Nevermore) will be joining their ranks for their upcoming European tour which kicks off November 26, as well as all future tours in 2015.

Jeff Loomis states:”I’m very excited to be playing with Arch Enemy. Michael Amott and I have stayed in contact over the years since we toured together when I was playing in Nevermore. Not only do I admire his guitar playing and songwriting, but I also consider him a close friend. To be able to share the stage with Michael, Sharlee, Daniel and Alissa is something I’m really looking forward to. 2015 is going to be a great year… See you all on tour!”After a great year of intensive touring in support of their critically acclaimed album, War Eternal, Arch Enemy are parting ways with guitarist Nick Cordle who states: “With War Eternal I believe we wrote an album together which will stand the test of time, and I wish them well for the future.”

USA fans will be able to catch a special reunion as Christopher Amott (the brother of ARCH ENEMY founder/bandleader Michael Amott) has joined the band for the remainder of their American headlining tour.

Michael Amott (guitars) comments: ”We all wish Nick the very best in his new endeavors and we are sure that you will hear much more from him. We’re also super grateful to my brother Christopher for stepping in to finish the current American tour!”

”The prospect of working with Jeff Loomis moving forward is truly awesome! Jeff Loomis is one of the best guitar players in the metal world in my opinion, as well as being a long time friend. I look forward to tearing it up on stages around the world together as we continue on the War Eternal’ touring cycle throughout all next year and beyond!”

2014 brings a new Scar Symmetry release, maybe their most ambitious and finest hour to date. The future focused The Singluarity (Phase I – Neohumanity), is a
collection of extremely well executed and technically proficient metal with cyber, death and epic metal characteristics. Perhaps not since the halcyon days of Fear Factory or Voivod has a metal band so earnestly and successfully wrestled with what it means to be a human amidst the growth of A.I. and the race to the technological finish line.

The band are not afraid to incorporate many tasteful chances to showcase their fluid leads and penchant for prog sounding vocal melodies, really paiting a vivid picture on the mind’s eye. Along with Allegaeon’s fantastic and heavy as heck Elements of the Infinite, this is a top choice for metal this year that includes a healthy fear of and fascination with our love of technological growth, even as humanity lags behind in matters of the soul and compassion.

What is left of us and who (or even what) are we becoming?

Carcass and Godflesh Peel Session available this week

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at 6:25 AM (PST)

1000x1000

This coming Thursday at 2pm EST, the second release from the Earache Peel Sessions will be available to order from the Earache Webstore. Carcass get the A side and Godflesh the B side and since Peel was an important taste maker and it is an honor to be part of a Peel Session, you know both of these sessions deliver serious fuckin’ aggro goodness. Peel kinda helped Napalm Death gain more notoriety and helped showcase many bands John believed in over the years. And how gnarly is this art?!

As always, make sure you get there quickly if you’d like the most limited color from this vinyl release, as it will sell out quickly!

At The Gates release “Death And The Labyrinth” (Official Video)

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at 5:21 PM (PST)

At The Gates logo

At The Gates have released a video for their stomping and mental canyon carving new nail-embedded slugger “Death And The Labyrinth”. The song’s maze of dissonance and choking screams in a blood pact with existential dread and dismay is… really heavy. It is good that the handsome melodeath devils are progressing but still can outdo almost any band at the heavy game, and because of mood and impact. Think of more forward thinking acts like Nails and The Secret today and you have to give credit to At The Gates for being able to again reach the heights of peer standards they themselves originally set. It’s not always the size of the riff but how you use it.

Let’s get this party started right and kick off the earliest “trve” days of Fall with some powerful new music from some well regarded musicians. These sounds are nothing short of a contribution to society that goes beyond any detractors remarks or behind the scenes personal stuff. These artists are on fire.

Taken on their own merits, the following songs are all powerful ways to tame the feeling of being a flickering thought in the cosmos, or at least come to grips with it while fighting a war against reality.

“Deceiver Of The Gods” clip by Amon Amarth sets forth to glory

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Friday, September 19, 2014 at 5:00 PM (PST)

AmonAmarth-DeceiverOfTheGods

Swedish heavy metal icons, Amon Amarth, have launched their brand new music video, the title track to their 2013 album, Deceiver of the Gods. The video features clips from the upcoming film, Northmen – A Viking Saga, which stars Tom Hopper, Ryan Kwanten, Ken Duken, and features Johan Hegg as Valli. The film is scheduled for release this Autumn. It’s no surprise, given the level of talent and eye-catching visuals of the film that this will be the most remarkable Amon Amarth video to date. Watch the video now at bloody-disgusting.com HERE. For more information about Northmen, click HERE.

About Northmen – A Viking Saga:

In the 9th century a group of Vikings, commanded by captain Asbjörn, is approaching Britain, aiming to plunder the rich monasteries in the north of the island. But their ship gets caught in a storm and is smashed to pieces on the rocks off the coast of Scotland, the only part of Britain without any Viking settlements. When Inghean, daughter of the Scottish King Dunchaid, by chance falls into Viking hands, they see the opportunity for demanding a large ransom. King Dunchaid immediately sets his “wolfpack” – a group of mercenaries well known for their savagery – on them. The Northmen with their hostage now have to force their way through the rough highlands, where they meet the brave and mysterious Christian monk Conall. Having the wolfpack close on their heels, a desperate race against time begins. A battle over life and death…

Interview: Kai Hahto and Jukka Koskinen of Wintersun

Posted by SeanB on Thursday, August 14, 2014 at 12:11 PM (PST)

WINTERSUN_30634_landscape

So this interview is actually a bit old but my computer has been out of commission for quite some time now (a speaker claimed its life) and half this interview was still on it…but I’m back bitches.  I’ve been able to copy the hard drive and finish writing this whole thing up so here it finally is.  Once upon a time, my partner in crime Tyrus and I got the opportunity to hang out with the one and only Wintersun‘s drummer Kai Hahto and bassist Jukka Koskinen. Due to my issues, the interview hasn’t been published, until now.  We had a pretty amazing conversation ranging in topics from musical influences such as Busta Rhymes, right down to The Muppet Show, and even drunken Santa Claus.  We had an awesome time with these guys and hopefully you’ll enjoy reading the interview as much as we did conducting it.

You can click right here to check the whole thing out.  Our good friend Butcher came along for the ride as well, so in the interest of not confusing everyone with our names I’ve only listed anyone from Metal Riot where appropriate.  Wonder Twin powers activate!

Carcass announce US tour with Obituary, Macabre, Exhumed, and Noisem too!

Posted by SeanB on Monday, August 11, 2014 at 6:12 PM (PST)

carcass_inked_in_steel_tour_2014Well this is exciting (if you don’t live where I do anyways).  Pioneering grindcore band Carcass have just announced a three week US tour covering a bunch of the areas that they missed last time around…and they’re bringing Exhumed and Noisem with them!  Obituary will be with them for most of the dates too with Macabre picking up where they leave off.  This is one badass lineup and if you live anywhere near one of these shows you need to go so I can live vicariously through someone.

For a complete list of dates and who’s going to be at each show click right here.

The tour is being called “Inked In Steel 2014” and even though the year is almost over, this looks like it might be one of the best so far.  Carcass released their sixth studio album called Surgical Steel earlier this year to stellar reviews. It was their first release since 1996’s Swansong.  Also, Hopefully Obituary have found the douche/douches who stole their backdrop while they were in Holland or at least have a new one by now.

Check out this exclusive footage of metal champions In Flames talking about the creation of the new album Siren Charms, which premiered on Loudwire. Enjoy!

This is my favorite material from the band since the early days! Siren Charms will entice you in and make you question yourself. I sincerely hope and pray that this music can be a guiding force for people to bridge different styles and limitations that hold us back in the metal scene and world.

The album is out September 9.

The hardened soldiers over at Metal Injection have awesomely been posting full pro shot sets from Wacken 2014 -including the likes of Motorhead, Emperor– and more. My fave so far has been the awesome performance from Amon Amarth, opening their set with “Father Of The Wolf” and laying waste from there to everything in their path.
