Band Spotlight: Battlecross

Are Battlecross the hardest working blokes in metal? In recent years they have certainly seemed like it. The thrashers released their best album yet Rise To Power in 2015 and were a constant presence on big tours, connecting to fans and in online discussions. This band already has the potential to be one of the next generation of thrash greats if they stay the course. We hope they continue their rise. They prove that you can’t do this if you are bound by fear! Get out there and hustle! \m/

Exumer announce “The Raging Tides”, tracklisting and art

Posted by Metal Riot on Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at 9:23 PM (PST)

exumer-theragingtides

German thrash metallers Exumer have announced The Raging Tides as their upcoming fourth full-length, set to be released January 29th via Metal Blade Records! To hear the first single – the album’s title track – and to pre-order the record in various formats, head over to:http://www.metalblade.com/exumer

Recorded with producer/engineer Waldemar Soychta at Waldstreet Sound in Dortmund, Germany, The Raging Tides is a deliberate and violent thrash attack that stays true to the band’s 30 year legacy. Conceptually and lyrically, vocalist Mem V. Stein has based the bulk of the record around human suffering – specifically “caused by torture or other means for political, religious, or personal gain for the individuals/organizations who inflict the pain,” Stein asserts. Inspired by a wide range of books and articles, the title of the album itself, according to Stein, “represents the ebb and flow of human misery and despair around the globe.”

See below for The Raging Tides‘ track-listing, with more news coming soon!

Album Review: Mirror – “S/T”

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at 8:59 AM (PST)

mirror

Mirror are a new, classic sounding metal band on Metal Blade who will likely
have a pretty good repeat listening value if you are a reader of this site.
Fans of sort of proto metal and NWOBHM influenced bands like Amulet or Night
Viper, who I often plug, will likely dig this. Throw Slough Feg in there was
well, as there is plenty of guitar worship and riff driven songwriting here.
Dueling guitars and willfully throwback tones with a bit better drum sounds
and other benefits of modern production, but never so clean that the spell is
broken. Plenty of head nodding moments on here.

“Curse of the Gypsy” has a certain, rugged “Highway Star” crunch to the
guitars with spooky laughter and “ahhhh” harmonies zooming out of nowhere for
great effect (think Sabbath’s “Sweet Leaf” looped coughing type vibe). The
band are not on the super doomy side of Sabbath, save perhaps the semi-
Candlemass sounding very awesome “Year of the Red Moon” track and a few other
moments. “Madness and Magik” is pretty darn close in effect and tone to
“Country Girl” from The Mob Rules album though, not like that is a bad thing.
Mirror are just as often akin to Diamond Head’s Lightning to the Nations
though or something like that, especially in the vocal range department. There
is not as much flair or power as, say, Holy Grail’s James Paul Luna or
Huntress’ Jill Janus (if Metallica had made the recent Huntress album Static
everyone would be flipping out but we live in a sexist world). Still, Mirror
vocalist Jimmy Mavromatis sounds like a true believer and certainly is a fit
choice to front this great band.

Mirror was the brainchild of Tas Danazoglou, perhaps best known for playing on
one of Electric Wizard’s most underrated albums Black Masses. Did I mention
fucking Matt Olivo from mighty Repulsion plays on this! It will be a lot to
wrap your head around if you are a fan of the much faster and grimier
Horrified, but who says metal dudes only have to like one type of metal?!
We’re family here in satan’s armpit!

Album Review: Act Of Defiance – “Birth and the Burial”

Posted by Andrew Johann Datoush on Friday, October 16, 2015 at 10:43 AM (PST)

So, I picked up the ACT OF DEFIANCE debut album Birth And The Burial today. I was a little skeptical at first, since the last time two dudes left MEGADETH and tried something new, David Ellefson and Jimmy DeGrasso gave us F5, which left a lot to be desired. Not to say that the band wasn’t any good, but you would expect more out of ex-MEGADETH guys. A lot more.

ACT OF DEFIANCE, formed by ex-MEGADETH members Shawn Drover (drums) and Chris Broderick (guitars), along with singer Henry Derek (ex-SCAR THE MARTYR) and bassist Matt Bachand (SHADOWS FALL) went down a completely opposite path as the boys in F5. The band is a perfect blend of so many different sun-genres of metal, there’s something for virtually everyone. Very old school, no nonsense, in your face metal, but still very new school at the same time.

Revocation are beloved around the world for being one of the hardest touring, funniest yet most insanely capable technical death metal bands in the business. They make it seem cool to be in a metal band again, kicking ass and getting things done whereas most bands are too busy bitching and moaning about what is good enough for them while scarcely leaving the boundaries of their own zip code.

Revocation have never settled and thus have made many impressive albums at this point. Some of their earliest material is now being re-released and you can hear a remixed and remastered version of “Summon The Spawn” at Decibel HERE.

Revocation’s Empire of the Obscene (including the Summon the Spawn demo) will be issued November 13th on Metal Blade Records. Click HERE for the pre-order.

Svbversvm is the impending new full-length from Sweden’s classic heavy metal stalwarts, RAM. Boasting ten raging hymns of death, post-apocalyptic dominance and total devastation through iron that recall the power and prestige of some of metal’s most revered acts (think Judas Priest, Mercyful Fate et al) without replicating them, RAM’s fourth studio offering was self-produced at Black Path Studios, mixed at Welfare Sounds by Olle Björk, Per Stälberg, and RAM, mastered by Daniel Johansson and will be unleashed on October 30th worldwide via Metal Blade Records. In Europe, Svbversvm will come available as a limited CD/DVD digipak, as well as on CD and vinyl.

In collaboration with Germany’s Rock Hard Magazine, today RAM offers up a clip of “Awakening The Chimaera.” Taken from the bonus DVD, X Anniversary, A Decade Of Heavy Metal Tyranny Concert, which comes free with the limited edition digipak of Svbversvm, the performance was filmed on Friday the 13th of September 2013 at a hometown show in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Sad news: RIP Bolt Thrower’s ‘Kiddie’ Kearns

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Thursday, September 17, 2015 at 6:46 AM (PST)

From the Black Conjuration Festival Facebook page.

Bolt Thrower have issued the following statement;

“With the heaviest of hearts, and still numb from shock, we have to share the very sad news that on Monday 14th September Bolt Thrower lost our powerhouse drummer, Martin ‘Kiddie’ Kearns.

After the first rehearsal for our upcoming tour of Australia, Kiddie suddenly felt unwell which continued throughout the night, and the next day he passed away peacefully in his sleep.

He was a fantastic Dad, husband, son, friend, but to us he was always ‘Kiddie’, the same 17 year old Coventry kid whose drumming style and personality blew us away when he first walked into our rehearsal room 20+ years ago.

Kiddie enriched our lives, and the Bolt Thrower sound. He leaves a massive hole in the lives of everyone who knew him and will be very sorely missed by many.

Karl, Jo, Baz, Gav & the loyal BT crew”

Behemoth release video for “The Satanist”

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at 4:46 PM (PST)

behemoth-satanist-video

Witness the visual accompaniment to Behemoth‘s track “The Satanist” HERE. As is often the case with the Polish group’s near limitless ambition, the video is a conceptual and aesthetic victory for all those who would run free.

Behemoth front man Nergal comments: “Behemoth has always been about breaking boundaries, taboos, leaving its comfort zone and thinking out of the box! Here we go again with the brand new video from us. It’s already a fourth official clip off “The Satanist”… The concept came from the director, Andrzej Dragan. It’s situated in modern Warsaw in the present times. It’s where the carnal world meets the unknown… it’s where the ZOS meets KIA… It’s where SACRUM is raped by PROFANUM…”

Director Andrzej Dragan adds: “This is a picture of alienation and ultimate rejection of an oversensitive character by an anonymous city.”
