Kingston, NY’s hardcore kings Painmask are underground vets who real heads know have been in this dogfight for decades. Now, the band have an upcoming gig with Cro-Mags and Sub Zero in Poughkeepsie, NY

Says intelligent vocalist Jay Avery:

“Were really excited for this upcoming show and the chance to meet and hang with great local acts and support two legendary New York Hardcore bands. Both Subzero and Cro-mags have pioneered the style and scene that we have always been proud to be part of. We’re taking this  opportunity to introduce new members of the band and material that is soon to be released. We’re confident that the new additions to the Painmask roster will once again deliver! Were a solid group of lifelong metalheads with endless ambition. Our strict mission is to deliver the most intense, thought provoking, heavy music set one could ask for.  And If you don’t believe me come see for yourself. We offer a money back guarantee!”

I asked Avery how about the material they recently tracked with Joey Z. of Life Of Agony fame at various studios?

“Were working on final mixes with the new tracks and couldn’t be more happier with the outcome. We were a little concerned at first with the recent member changes, but what has emerged is incredible! Life’s circumstances have parlayed into something bigger and stronger then we could have imagined. JoeyZ really is a cut above to work with. His advice and professionalism is second to none! But with the recent resurgence of Life of Agony and their European shows this month, we’ve had to take a short pause from mastering. We should have these songs available by mid September. But if you’re one of the lucky ticket holders and we see you at the sold out LOA reunion on Sept 13 in Sayreville NJ. I might even have a copy for you.”

Coal Chamber are baaack, sign to Napalm for new album

Coal Chamber and Napalm Records have announced the studio return of the Nu Metal West Coast spooksters.

“Napalm Records is pleased to announce the signing of Los Angeles, California’s COAL CHAMBER, a band that stood as leaders at the forefront of new genres, constantly reinventing their sound and not fitting any mold except their own. With sold out tours, and millions of records sold, COAL CHAMBER owned the Scene from the mid nineties until their tumultuous breakup in May of 2002. Now they have returned to take their place at the top where they once were and intend to be there for years to come. Call it what you want, ‘The Return’, ‘The Second Coming of’, but no matter what you call it, be prepared for COAL CHAMBER to rule again.”

I for one am psyched. Dark Days is way fuckin’ underrated (and incidentally was produced by my half-sister Stephanie’s uncle Ross Hogarth). I am very curious to hear what this band will sound like in 2014, especially since Dez has been on fire with Devildriver. I think CC are gonna hit it hard and be real hungry to prove themselves again, like on the fist album. Word up.

White Arms Of Athena are a band I just recently discovered and so I was thrilled to learn they are tracking a sophomore effort for Prosthetic Records.

I was just talking about this band on Twitter with some Coheed and Cambria fans and Neesh from Neeshcast Radio. Today I found out they’ve  recorded their sophomore Prosthetic effort at GodCity Studio in Salem, Mass. with acclaimed producer and Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou (Every Time I Die, High On Fire, Kvelertak). The as-yet-untitled album — expected to be released later this year — will be mixed by Ballou, engineered and co-produced by Travis Kammeyer (Storm of Light, Generation of Vipers) and mastered by Alan Douches (Baroness, The Dillinger Escape Plan).

The band, which has previously shared the stage with acts including Arsonists Get All The Girls, Katalepsy, Fallujah, The Contortionist, The Ocean, East of the Wall, Holy Grail and Baring Teeth, will release further information on the upcoming release in the coming weeks. Follow them on social media for the latest updates:

Full Of Hell to collaborate with Merzbow

Full-of-Hell-7-e1401804393750

Powerviolence/harsh noise sculptors, FULL OF HELL, have just confirmed a barrage of upcoming recording and tour plans, including new tours on both the North American and European continents, as well as a joint release with renowned noise metal architect, Merzbow.

Following up their 2013-released sophomore LP, Rudiments Of Mutilation, and recently-released split LP with Integrity’s Dwid Hellion and his experimental/noise outfit Psywarfare, this Summer, FULL OF HELL will continue to explore their more caustic noise heredity by recording a fully collaborative recording with Japan’s longtime lord of noise/electronics, Merzbow. The album will see vinyl release in North America via A389 Recordings, a European vinyl release via Stab/Repeat Records, and CD/digital delivery via Profound Lore Records. Additional details on this undoubtedly demoralizing recording will be available upon its imminent studio creation in the coming months.

Additionally, FULL OF HELL will take the action back to the streets on another brutalizing tour across Europe for over a month, from today, Tuesday, June 3rd through May 7th, joined by Disciples Of Christ.

And this just in; this August, FULL OF HELL will destroy the West Coast US with A389 labelmates, Noisem, and headlining longtime political hardcore/grind act, DropDead. This eight-city run will tear a trail from Seattle to Southern California between August 22nd and 29th.

New England veterans WITHIN THE RUINS have announced the release of their fourth LP, PHENOMENA out July 22, 2014. The new effort will be the followup to the highly successful Elite full length released early last year. Elite was well received, Decibel Magazine called their sound “brutal yet harmonious, two traits few bands nowadays can handle simultaneously.” Metal Hammer plainly stated, “Precise, brutal and bursting with great songs, this fucking rips.”

“We took six months off over the winter too eat, sleep and breath this album. It was by far the most in depth we’ve ever gone in the writing process. ” says guitarist Joe Cocchi. Within the Ruins recently posted an exclusive studio report with Gear Gods that sheds more light on the blood, sweat and tears the band has poured into this release. Cocchi continues, “Since the inception of this band our attitude has always been to completely trump our previous efforts in every aspect, and I think we did just that. We’re beyond stoked for people to hear this one.

The band just wrapped up dates supporting Whitechapel and Carnifex, highlighted by a knockout performance at the 2014 NEW ENGLAND METAL AND HARDCORE FESTIVAL.

Within The Ruins just announced a headlining string of dates with LORNA SHORE and will supporting MORBID ANGEL, THE FACELESS, GOATWHORE and more on this year’s SUMMER SLAUGHTER TOUR. For all tour dates, click here.

High On Fire begin work on new opus

California rock giants High On Fire have begin work on their new, as-yet-untitled studio album. The globally-celebrated group — guitarist/vocalist Matt Pike, drummer Des Kensel and bassist Jeff Matz — have convened for strategic writing sessions in both New Orleans, LA and Oakland, CA, with early reports indicating the band’s new material to be both “epic” and “sonically huge”. A winter 2015 tentative release date via eOne is expected for the new LP, the follow-up to 2012’s De Vermis Mysteriis, which has been hailed as “not for the faint of heart ” by The New Yorker and “a fantastically constructed bloodbath” by Entertainment Weekly.”Des, Jeff and I are really getting creative and writing a hell of a new record,” states Pike. “It’s a crazy project and I can’t really explain what it’s all about just yet, but we’ve been writing a lot of crazy intense material that will up the ante, and bring things to another level.”

“Everyone is asking what the new High on Fire music sounds like,” adds Kensel. “Chew on some mescaline and listen to side B of Sabbath’s “Master of Reality” backwards at 78 RPM and it might give you an idea.”

Northwestern riff-masters LORD DYING have entered the studio to record the follow-up to their full-length debut Summoning the Faithless. The record will be produced and engineered by Toxic Holocaust‘s Joel Grind and mastered by Brad Boatright at Portland’s Audio Siege Studios. The album will feature eight tracks of blistering riffs and neck-snapping grooves and be the band’s first recordings with new drummer Rob Shaffer (Dark Castle, Monarch). It is expected to see a winter release. The band weighed in on the upcoming record:

“We are very proud to be releasing our new record into the world. It is our most concise and brutal offering to date. Crank it up, bang your head and come see us on the road!”

Earlier this year, LORD DYING sandwiched a US headlining tour in between two European treks with Red Fang. They will rejoin their fellow Portlanders along with Crowbar, Exhumed, Coffins, Windhand, and more at the Scion Rock Fest in Pomona, CA on May 17th. Fans couldn’t be more stoked to hear Suicide Silence‘s new full length unless Mitch hadn’t died. It is arguably by far the most anticipated metal release of 2014. These guys and Whitechapel are clearly the band’s of the next generation who will fight for metal. It is different, yet still true.

Now you can briefly be a fly on the wall as Suicide Silence has posted a short clip documenting the making-of their new record. Vocalist Eddie Hermida (ex-All Shall Perish) is displayed as a full member and it is obviously their first full-length recording since the shitty death of Mitch Lucker. You Can’t Stop Me will be released on July 11 (Europe), July 14 (UK) and July 15, 2014 (North America) via Nuclear Blast Entertainment.

Woodstock/Kingston, NY based alternative prog-metal and funk space soldiers 3 have decided to switch models for the time being and concentrate on releasing singles. Band founder, guitar prodigy Joey Eppard fills us in:

“We decided this was the best way forward for the band at this point. If I sit down to make a record, its kinda like ok seeya in a few years..lol …. so we thought why not focus on 1 song a month, with video content, teasers, new art and shirt designs. So I’m knee deep in it right now. 1 week, still cutting vocals, need Billy’s guitar, Daniel’s bass as well. Should be an interesting week!”

The first song seems to be a 3 tune called “Sugarlife” that they play live. It is refreshing to see the band continue to evolve and adapt with creative solutions to each passing year.Fans who want to help can buy merch HERE, with proceeds going to the continued production of all 2014 singles by 3. Cool stuff!

Stay tuned for more 3 news as we get it.

Painmask: Tracking with Joey Z (Life of Agony) Pt. 2

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 9:04 PM (PST)

Upstate NY’s long running Painmask recently went back in the studio with Joey Z (Life of Agony guitar legend). The band’s vocalist Jay Avery last week went to Long Island and tracked his vocals on some new material. Joey even contributed some backup vocals to Painmask’s “One5Nation”.

Painmask bassist Carl Carlew had this to say: The most exciting thing about working with a producer the caliber of Joey Z is that we are confident that our vision for how these tracks could sound, and should sound, will finally be fully realized. We have the utmost respect for where he comes from as a musician, and I feel that musically and vocally he has pushed us to deliver the best performances possible. Joey’s music has helped shape our sound through the years, so I can’t think of anyone better to capture where we’re currently at in our musical evolution. As a producer, he has recently worked with bands such as NYC’s Killcode that are currently making waves in the metal/hard rock underground, so we hope to use his involvement with this recording to help springboard Painmask to the next level. We have hopes for big things on the horizon!

No word yet on when the tracks will see the light of day but we will keep you posted. In other news, Painmask are seeking a new guitarist. Interested applicants better know their Biohazard and can contact the band via Facebook HERE.

Not only will audiences be presented with music from their critically-acclaimed Prosthetic debut Empyrean, an album included on multiple “Best Of 2012” lists (Decibel, Pitchfork), but they will also be privy to hearing new material from the band’s as-yet-untitled follow-up, scheduled to be recorded next month. Drummer Justin Ennis announced, “After a full year of working on material for our follow-up to Empyrean, we are prepared to etch it in stone. Once again our friend Kevin Bernstein (TRIAC) will be at the helm. This will be our fourth release documented with him at Developing Nations in Baltimore. After two years with us, these will also be the first recordings to feature Ryan Jones (ex-Today is the Day) on bass and vocals. He is a beast amongst men.”

The new album is scheduled to be released this summer via Prosthetic Records.

To further your excitement, Mutilation Rites have released a self-produced video showcasing the band performing two tracks live from the Union Pool in Brooklyn.

Hell Yeah’s Sin City new album news blast!

In news more exciting than my Christian Mingle profile…

…Determined to bring their fans something fresh and new, the members of HELLYEAH have hunkered down in Las Vegas, Nevada with producer Kevin Churko (Ozzy Osbourne, Five Finger Death Punch, In This Moment) and are nearing the end of an epic time in the studio.

The band, comprised of rock royalty, Vinnie Paul of Pantera; Chad Gray and Greg Tribbett of Mudvayne, Tom Maxwell of Nothingface and Bobzilla of Damageplan, has been making good-time hard rock music since its debut in 2007.   Adding a new dimension to their work, they brought in producer and collaborator, Churko.  The band’s growth and his contribution promise to make this release unforgettable.

Says Big Vin: “This record is heavy and diverse.  It was an honor working with Kevin Churko… everything we did on this record was from a different perspective.  Kevin really pushed and got the best out of us.  Can’t wait for all the HELLIONS to hear it.”

Churko: “HELLYEAH has really come into this record with a hunger. They’re putting everything they have into it. They’ve really impressed me both with the tracks they brought in and with their drive to make them even better. I think they’ll really be delivering their best record yet to their fans and they’ll be making new believers out of others. 2014 will be the year of HELLYEAH!.”

The as-yet-untitled release is due out on Eleven Seven Music on April 28 in the UK and 29 in the US. Now if only they would do a B-side cover of Skrapp Metal’s “Muff Diving In The 80’s”, I’d be super pumped. Chad could give Jeff Scott Soto a run for his $.
