Fear Factory announces new drummer

Posted by tyrusrunyan on Friday, April 20, 2012 at 10:47 AM (PST)

Fear Factory has confirmed that Mike Heller has replaced drummer Gene Hoglan who had stepped down due to “conflicting obligations.” It would appear that Dino Cazares enlisted the help of Sick Drummer Magazine to help find a replacement as is evidenced in the following article which was posted on their site:

Due to conflicting obligations, Gene Hoglan recently had to step down from the Fear Factory throne, leaving it open for replacement. Dino Cazares came to us a while ago and asked if Sick Drummer Magazine could help the band find the ideal guy, and we were more than happy to make several suggestions, some of which actually flew out and auditioned in person. There were many amazing players auditioned in person and via video submission, but it had to unfortunately come down to only one guy.

Dino, Burton C. Bell and Matt DeVries want to personally thank each and every guy who spent time learning the songs and to let you know this was one of the hardest decicions they have ever had to make, but in the end… Mike Heller was just the best fit for Fear Factory moving forward. Mike’s abilities on the kit, transcribing notation, his feel, power and precision, are some of the best they have ever seen and they are very excited to welcome him to the Fear Factory camp.

Here is what Mike Heller had to say about joining the band: “It is an incredible honor to be chosen as the new drummer for Fear Factory! It’s something I never would have dreamt of as a kid listening to “Soul of A New Machine” and “Demanufacture” over and over again in middle school. It’s also an incredible honor to be following in the footsteps of two of the most amazing and influential drummers in metal drumming history. I hope to continue their legacy, creating some of the most forward-thinking and innovative music available today.”

You may know Mike Heller for his work with Malignancy or more recently, System Divide. Regardless of what you know, Mike is one of the most talented drummers we know, as well as one of the best drum teachers in the industry. Mike himself studied at The Collective School of Music in NYC and has since instructed countless industry professionals and worked with them (on and off tour) to improve their technique, overcome muscle issues, gain control and a myriad of other characteristics of being a pro drummer. He is a super nice guy and an avid collector of drum gear! Aside from his regular playing, we can honestly say he is the most talented linear player we’ve ever seen and want to say congratulations and good luck!

New Details on Burzum Upcoming Album Umskiptar

Posted by JDKleinhans on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at 3:53 PM (PST)

The new album from Varg Vikernes will see North American release on May 22 via Candlelight Records. Finding inspiration from the verses of famous Scandinavia poem “Voluspa,” Umskiptar is a return-to-roots album. Says the controversial musician: “The vocals are more important than on any previous album with a total of 66 stanzas making up the album’s lyrics.

Umskiptar expands Burzum’s ongoing influence of Nordic folk, but for this album adds more traditional heavy metal, signature Burzum composition, and a keener emphasis on vocal delivery – once again presented in Vikernes’ native tongue. Umskiptar (or Metamorphoses) follows the historical story that details the creation of the world and its end as dictated to Odin, a recurring character in Burzum’s lyrics. Umskiptar follows 2011’s Fallen.

Fear Factory Announce Upcoming Album “The Industrialist” Release Date

Posted by JDKleinhans on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at 3:59 PM (PST)

Candlelight Records today confirms June 5 as the North American release date for Fear Factory‘s new album, The Industrialist. Produced by the band with Rhys Fulber (Front Line Assembly), the album was mixed by Greg Reely (Paradise Lost/Skinny Puppy/Machine Head). It features additional tracking by Logan Mader (Gojira/Divine Heresy/Five Finger Death Punch) and artwork by Anthony Clarkson (Devin Townsend).

The Industrialist is a conceptual album that brings to life a story scripted by vocalist Burton C. Bell. The album’s lyrics detail the plot of the original narrative while delivering Fear Factory’s massive signature sound. Bell reveals, “the album is a futuristic tale of an automaton, striving to survive by fighting for its existence within a desperate world. The lyrics tell the story while the music takes our industrial roots and blends them more perfectly than ever with our metal edge. And all without losing the sound that makes Fear Factory a machine of sonic devastation. Fear Factory fans of any era will not be disappointed.”

Clocking in at just under one hour, the album’s ten songs again unite Bell with guitarist Dino Cazares. It is the second album written by the duo, reuniting in 2009 after a seven year split. Cazares says, “collaborating with Burton again on the new album was like magic. Everything just fell into place naturally. It felt good to recapture the true sound of Fear Factory, taking it back to where it all started while raising it to new levels.”

Album Review: Abigail Williams – “Becoming”

Posted by JDKleinhans on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at 2:54 AM (PST)

I often ask myself, “What purpose does music serve? Why does every culture in human civilization, past and present, have music as such an integral part of its culture?” I could go on about how music is divinely inspired and describe its transcendental nature. I could rattle on about Jung’s collective unconscious and the archetypal representations of music and its various elements. I could compare the math of music to the physics of the universe and of creation itself. I could do all that but I won’t. Instead, I shall direct you to the latest Abigail Williams release, Becoming.

Find out why this album is what music is all about right here.
