Interview: Monster Magnet – Get Your Ass To Mars

If people keep paying attention to music the way they do now, there aint gonna be any good music. Cuz they don’t deserve it and the artists aint gonna make it… Grown men going to Avenged Sevenfold concerts. Are you fucking kidding me? -Dave Wyndorf

On the 15th day of the voyage, seabirds began to circle overhead and some of the older men swore they could smell land. Fergus felt a little wrench, for he knew that miles over the horizon to the port was Cape St. Vincent and the waters where Captain Burbage had died and the ATHENA had received her brutal pounding at the hands of the Spanish. Damn, it was little more than a year ago, but it felt like a lifetime to him. He smiled ruefully and asked himself if his fortunes had indeed improved in that time. – from “Captain Kilburnie” by William P. Mack

Space Freak rock overlords Monster Magnet return with new/now odyssey The Last Patrol (Napalm Records), the second near perfect record this year to feature the word “Last” (The other is Cathedral’s The Last Spire). NJ Native Dave Wyndorf drops in from Mt. Riff’o’ lympus to detail the 60’s psych throwback future 70’s sounds of the latest Magnet voyage, their first U.S. tour in some time (with witch/pitch-perfect blues shamans Royal Thunder) and  other topics like real rock n’ roll, how to track in the modern age, Dr. Strange, rock star vs. indie nerd lifestyles, selfies, Tori Amos and much more.

Album Review: DevilDriver – Winter Kills

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at 9:56 AM (PST)

Unknown-1

Winter kills but it also tests our mettle (metal?). By now we all know the phrase “winter is coming” as a reminder to brace for whatever life brings. DevilDriver kind of embody this in a metal sense in that album after album they do what they do, nose to the grindstone, take it or leave it. Consistent drive and resolve in the face of time’s march is the hallmark of what makes a lasting metal band (with the odd Cold Lake or Risk in some band’s discographies).

In horror movies you have your low level classics like Ghoulies and you have your engorged Hollywood level Rob Zombie Halloween remakes. If DevilDriver were a horror movie they would be somewhere in between (Maybe a Gremlins 2 : The New Batch?). Pretty well known but still kind of a cult classic. DevilDriver are not as acclaimed or favored with the “street cred” of Lamb of God, if certainly as heavy sometimes.  Nonetheless, DevilDriver are one of the biggest bands in metal. Pre-“FREE RANDY”, Dez Fafara had more mainstream crossover name recognition due to his time in Coal Chamber, maybe? I dunno. Despite Coal Chamber’s powerful Download return (watch this pit for “Sway” on Youtube), Nu Metal is still the once loved but still discarded lingerie in the corner no one wants to get caught sniffing anymore (I still say Dark Days was underrated and the best CC album).

Anyway, Winter Kills proves that regardless of past trends, DevilDriver should be judged on their own merit.

DevilDriver and Trivium announce co-headlining tour

Posted by longhairedpoet on Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at 1:37 PM (PST)

Devildriver tour poster California groove metallers DevilDriver are teaming up with Floridian metalcore masters Trivium to take over North America in the fall.

DevilDriver will be touring in support of their new album Winter Kills which will come out on August 27 via Napalm Records.

The tour will be rounded out by After the Burial and Sylosis.

DevilDriver frontman Dez Fafara had this to say about the tour:

“It’s been almost a year since DEVILDRIVER have toured the US. I am Stoked to finally be getting the chance to go back out and hit the road with ‘The Groove Machine’! This tour will be a mixture of DEVILDRIVER favorites and a bunch of new stuff off of our new record Winter Kills. I cannot wait for the record to come out and to get back to what we do best, play live. Touring with our friends in Trivium, After the Burial and Sylosis is just the fucking bonus! Come on out for a great night of metal, get ready to get down and dirty, see you in the pit!”
