“Going dark” in theatre speak means a show is closed down whereas it is “lit” when the production is up and running. Some things manage to be both lit and embrace the dark at the same time (Kerli’s recent confident electro-spooky wub wubbing  “Where The Dark Things Are” track from the awesome as hell Shadow Works album comes to mind). Tribulation, one of the most darkly theatrical and grandiose yet no nonsense musical bands in any era of metal, certainly also could count as both “lit” and very dark, indeed. You might even call them creatures of the night.

Now Tribulation are unveiling their first official live album, the marvelous new Alive & Dead at Södra TeaternThis is a major moment for this acclaimed band from Sweden who have wowed so many with their deep dives into the inner fears of humanity.  Invited by ex-Nirvana 2002 vocalist and curator Orvar Säfström, who served as master of ceremonies, Tribulation’s first-ever Södra Teatern (Southern Theatre) main hall gig was a very special night of black celebration.

Founding member Adam Zaars took the time to speak to me through mists of swirling terror (actually through email) to attempt to illumine what the chemistry, moment and import of this release means to the frighteningly talented band behind it. Read MORE below.

Hey gang. Feeling the cooling positivity of that day after blue wave feeling and sipping some black coffee. Finally checking out this Cro-Mags (Harley version) promo from the remnants of Victory and I have to say that I don’t really understand why anyone says it sucks. “From The Grave” with Phil from Motorhead is a ripping rad rager and the vocals do sound ferocious if not my favorite voice for the band. I am way more of a fan of the John and Mackie version and wish they could somehow just dead this shit in the name of PMA and form the tightest , ugly heavy and illest combo going but after the violence and all the hate I understand why it is two distinct camps. It is sad, but I am gonna try and keep an open heart and love both.

Been going through a lot of crazy shit the last month with a very crummy landlord situation and family stuff as well as the year winding down so haven’t had the gusto to do too much self-insertion into any posts, but I wanted to thank you all who continue to support the site and also in the scene and general world who believe in ourselves and one another. We can heal a lot and restore balance to the force or justice or progress as a scene or wider society if we can process our pains and biases and try to move things in a productive and healing direction while still having respect for oneself and boundaries. I have to believe for all the good and bad days we all have that a lot of us underneath it all are better people than not or at least want to be. Sending you all love and horns tonight. Don’t mind me, I finally finished reading The Elfstones of Shannara and the sacrifice of Amberle to bond  with the land as the next tree protector to shelter and cradle life through synergy has affected me and made me think about interconnectedness.

Anyway, on to some evil ass gnarly metal news- hahaha!

It has been a big Season Of Mist week around here so let’s not stop now! Defiled from Japan have a new album announced. This death metal group rip so fucking hard, it is truly a spectacle of unhinged wonder. The band will release their new studio album, Infinite Regress on January 24, 2020. The album art and track-list can be found below. Additionally, the band have revealed “Tragedy,” the first single from the effort. “Tragedy” can be heard below.

DEFILED comment: “The day has finally come! We are so incredibly proud to announce our new record, ‘Infinite Regress.’ The album will be out on 24th Jan 2020 via our home of Season of Mist. Please give a listen to our first official premiere song ‘Tragedy’ and we hope you guys enjoy it. Cheers!”

I don’t know about you but I think “Tragedy” fucking rules and love the brainy intro that devolves into fierce speed and then interesting slower deathy kinda tribal thud before back to a full fledged powerful attack. And some chunky ass lead parts amidst the growling chaos! This band is so cool and I really like their arrangements and clear dedication to not giving a shit about trends.

‘Infinite Regress’ can be pre-ordered in various formats HERE.

CARACH ANGREN from are currently in the studio recording the follow up to the exquisitely titled Dance and Laugh Amongst The Rotten release. This new effort will be the 6th horror infused black metal theatrical endeavor from the twisted act of geniuses from Netherlands.

The band comment: “After many incredible tours meeting our dedicated fans around the globe, we finally return to the studio! Over the past two years a lot of creativity and effort has already flown into preparing our sixth monstrous full length album. For recording drums, bass and guitars we return to familiar grounds, working with the talented Patrick Damiani at his Tidal Wave Studio in Germany while vocals and orchestral arrangements are being prepared in our own crypt. For the mix of the album we welcome a new force, namely Robert Carranza (MARILYN MANSON), who’s work up until now has impressed us very much. Get ready for another chapter of horror!”

More details as we get them. In the meantime…

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Monday, November 4, 2019 at 8:34 AM (PST)

Here is some cool and somewhat different news for your Monday (other than that Richard Spencer is a POS nazi and wbk). Apple TV’s new series “See,” starring Jason Momoa (‘Aquaman,’ ‘Game of Thrones,’ etc.), features a special appearance from ARCHSPIRE vocalist Oli Peters and drummer Spencer Prewett on the pilot episode! Don’t miss this killer lineup, show up early to the shows and support all bands!” – Steffen Kummerer

DARKEST HOUR are one of the true believer standouts of metalcore who have weathered many storms, never got super huge but always put up a good fight, delivering album after great fucking album about society hanging on by tattered threads. A nine city co-headling West Coast tour with Unearth is coming up along with the European celebration of band’s 25th anniversary celebration (including dates with fucking Bloodlet, aghh!) – so much riffjoicing is in order. Sick poster by my friend Chris for the West Coast tour, I might add.

Offers DARKEST HOUR, “2019, we are not done with you yet. Just added some shows on the West Coast with our dudes in Unearth! We have seen all the amazing feedback from you all, and we have listened. Both bands will be playing FULL headlining, rip’n, face melting sets. We have had a ton of fun all over the world with Unearth and we are stoked to slide these dates in before the end of the year. We have some huge things in store for 2020 but if you live in these cities come out and party like its 1999 with us and Unearth!”

A month later, DARKEST HOUR will kick off 2020 with a return to Europe for a sixteen-city special 25th anniversary tour, where they’ll be joined by special guests Fallujah, Bloodlet, Une Misere, and Lowest Creature.

The band comments, “It is with extreme excitement that we announce what we hope to be one of many tour’s next year celebrating our 25th anniversary! Over these past twenty-five years we have toured with both new and established bands and have always worked hard to make our tour packages diverse and interesting. This tour is in keeping with that tradition. Fallujah is ripping progressive death metal who have had our attention for a while, can’t wait to see these riffs live. Bloodlet is a very special band to us. One of our early influences, it is EASY to say we would not be a band (or at least not the same band) without their influence. We grew up going to their shows and it’s a joy to be able to share the stage with them. We got to see Une Misere play this summer and were impressed, insanely heavy, Icelandic mosh of the highest form. Lowest Creature is a killer blend of classic metal elements we all love translated with a new and distinctly Swedish twist. Oh, and you know we will have a few surprises planned for this set special 25th anniversary set. See you in the pit!”

Godless Prophets & The Migrant Flora is available on CD, black vinyl LP, picture disc LP, and all digital platforms via Southern Lord; find ordering options at the label’s webstore HERE, via Bandcamp HERE, and through all digital providers.

Sodom release new song ‘Down On Your Knees’ from latest EP

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Friday, October 18, 2019 at 9:48 AM (PST)

German Thrash icons SODOM have released a new song today titled “Down On Your Knees,” and will release a new EP titled Out Of The Frontline Trench on November 22, 2019. The all-new effort will be available via Entertainment One (“eOne”) in North America and SPV/Steamhammer in Europe as CD DigiPak, vinyl, download, and stream.

Tom Angelripper says: “Postcards and letters from my granddad, which I discovered among the things he left behind when he died, and some TV documentaries have given me a vague idea of what it must have been like for soldiers back in those days to leave their trenches and face those life-threatening battles.”

The close relationship between a metal band and its fans can be measured by – among other things – how long they make their supporters wait for new songs. So looking at it from that perspective, Sodom is exemplary, seeing that they’ve always supplied their huge following with new material at regular intervals. The release of their current album Decision Day was followed – in time for their major European tour in December 2018 – by the EP Partisan.

Now the Gelsenkirchen thrash metal act, led by Tom Angelripper (vocals, bass), presents its generous side again. Before the work on their upcoming full length is set to begin, Sodom are ready to unleash their brand-new mini-album Out Of The Frontline Trench. Angelripper calls the recording “a sign of life for our fans.” Having recorded, together with his guitarists Frank Blackfire and Yorck Segatz plus drummer Husky, three new songs as well as two classics (one of them re-recorded, the other one live number), ‘Out Of The Frontline Trench’ forging an arch between (Sodom’s) past, present, and future.

Backtrack announce final two shows ever

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Friday, October 18, 2019 at 9:38 AM (PST)

New York hardcore outfit BACKTRACK has announced the band’s final two shows ever, confirmed to take place this November on their Long Island, New York hometown turf at the conclusion of their ongoing international final tour.

After eleven years as a band, having toured most of the planet several times over with countless other acts, and having released a long line of releases through several notable labels, the members of BACKTRACK have decided to go their separate ways on good terms. However, before they shut it down for good, they’re going to hammer the planet with an incredible amount of touring throughout the rest of 2019.

Following their East Coast US tour with Dead Heat and Rule Them All June, and West Coast US tour with King Nine, Minus, and Somerset Thrower in August, a tour through the Southeast Asia, Japan, Australia, and more during September and October, BACKTRACK is set to begin their European Farewell Tour 2019. Running from October 30th through November 14th, the tour features shows in Greece, Spain, Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, Poland, the UK, France, and Hungary.

Upon their return from Europe, BACKTRACK will tear a hole in Long Island with their final two shows ever with two hometown gatherings. Both shows will take place at Revolution Bar & Music Hall in Amityville, New York. Friday, November 29th, BACKTRACK will be joined by Down To Nothing, Mindforce, The Fight, and a special guest yet to be announced. The previously-posted final show, Saturday, November 30th – which sold out in several days – will see BACKTRACK joined by Terror, No Warning, King Nine, Hangman, and Rule Them All.

Tickets for the 29th show are on sale now and but will not last! Find them HERE.

BACKTRACK has been an imposing force looming over the underground music scene for over a decade, having cemented their name in hardcore lore one record, tour, and diatribe at a time. Their output seethes with the tough-as-nails posture of Killing Time and Agnostic Front while snaking through glimmers of crossover

The members of BACKTRACK collectively offer, “We appreciate everyone who has shown this band love over the past eleven years. Thanks to anyone who has supported us along the way, and we look forward to seeing you one last time.”

The Old Dead Tree cap off their legacy with one final EP, ‘The End’

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at 12:22 PM (PST)

The Old Dead Tree were one of the best metal bands I ever heard in my life. I was particularly obsessed with their 2007 release The Water Fields, which I raved about for Crusher Magazine the year it was released. I can’t believe it has been so long already! I have probably listened to that CD more than any other progressive minded death metal. The Paris, France based act just captivated me with cool riffs, imaginative and passionate songwriting and emotional thrills. Today I am thrilled to announce, absolutely elated to write, that Manuel Munoz and the band are releasing one more record many years since their last.  Honestly this news almost made me tear up today.

‘The End’ which will be released on December 6. This final chapter, containing 5 never released tracks, was already written in 1999, a few days before the tragic loss of drummer Frédéric Guillemot. With this record, the band is closing their career with one last tribute to their long-lost friend. The EP includes a bonus DVD containing an extensive documentary on the band’s career.

In addition to the announcement, THE OLD DEAD TREE has premiered the first single from the record, “The End… Again.”

‘The End’ can be pre-ordered in various formats HERE. Pick up their other CDs while you are at it!

Vocalist/Guitarist Manuel Munoz comments on the track: “We’re proud and happy to share these new songs with you. As you know, beautiful things take time…”
