March For Our Lives is going on today and I am so stoked at the bravery and power of all the voices in unison demanding change. This has been an incredible month of social change and even accountability in metal as well as the world.
Well, it was VERY hard to pick just four albums for this month’s four favorites. There were a dozen records I really LOVED this month. Some flirt with dark stuff but weren’t really metal like my actual fave any genre record of the month – the new one from post-gothers VOWWS called Under The World. Other stuff I want to shout out includes stuff that is absolutely killer like Andrew WK (who had the two most uplifting singles in hard rock by far for the year thus far at a time we really need it), Memoriam, Slaves BC or especially also Rivers Of Nihil’s great prog influenced leap forward or BESVÄRJELSEN‘s potent Swedish doom brew Vallmo.
These records were and are bad ass af but ultimately edged out to the four records BELOW which I felt were the best four albums associated with the metal genre this month.Add to My Radar
Long-running Washington-based heavy rock trio MOS GENERATOR will release a new full-length this May via Listenable Records. Titled Shadowlands, the eight-track studio offering was recorded in three sessions — June 2017, November 2017, and January 2018 — at the HeavyHead Recording Company in Port Orchard, Washington and comes swathed in the cover art of Adam Burke [Pilgrim, Satan’s Satyrs, Hooded Menace, Artificial Brain et al].
“Right from the opening song, Shadowlands is a record that, to me, feels more honest than our previous releases,” relays founding guitarist/vocalist/principal songwriter Tony Reed. “On this record, I introduce many other styles that I enjoy but they are intertwined so subtly that it doesn’t interrupt the classic MOS GENERATOR sound. That is a balance I’ve been looking for over the last few albums and I think the presence of [drummer] Jon Garrett and [bassist] Sean Booth have a lot to do with achieving that balance. It’s a heavy rock record that breaths and if I had to describe it further I would say it mixes ’70s style heavy rock, progressive rock, and also has some weird ’80s and ’90s underground rock nuances.”
Shadowlands will see release via Listenable Records in Europe on May 11th followed by a US street date of May 18th with preorder info to be announced in the coming weeks.

Denver black metal act WAYFARER has issued the cover art, track listing, and other details of their impending third LP, World’s Blood, nearing May release through Profound Lore Records. The band also announces new spring tour dates with the likes of Primitive Man, Krallice, Forn, and more.
A reflection of the Rocky Mountains and high plains of their native Colorado, WAYFARER tells a story that is uniquely American. Drawing influence as much from the dusty, dark Americana of the “Denver sound” and the scores of epic Westerns as they do the fury and melody of black metal, WAYFARER brings something original to the table with a sound that is at once aggressive and honest. Their third album World’s Blood paints a hallucinatory picture of the Western frontier, and the haunting presence of the blood in the soils from a culture lost to time.
WAYFARER recorded World’s Blood in the winter of early 2018 at The Thousand Caves in New York under the watchful production of Colin Marston. The cover displays an antique photograph by Edward S. Curtis taken in Montana in 1908.
Profound Lore will release World’s Blood on May 25th; audio samples, preorders, and more will be released in the weeks ahead.

Shadow Woods is back from the brink! After the original Maryland based property was sold, things looked bleak. Somehow the organizers pulled things back together and this looks to be the best year yet!
Shadow Woods is the Mid-Atlantic’s only open-air camping heavy metal gathering and runs from Thursday, September 20th through Saturday, September 22th in Purcellville, VA at Harpers Ferry Adventure Center (HFAC).
For the fourth year, the festival will host over 40 of the underground’s leading bands, representing many genres and subgenres of heavy metal, folk, rock, experimental, and noise. “It was pretty clear from the positive feedback I received after the 2017 fest that festival goers did not want to see Shadow Woods end, even though our property in Maryland had been sold,” said Mary Spiro, fest founder. “So without a venue or a confirmed lineup, I started quietly raising the funds to do a new fest via the contributions of past attendees. In January 2018, I was able to find an fantastic site to host the fest that was even better than what we had before. The lineup came together very quickly and I am extremely proud and excited to present these past favorites and new discoveries.”
Imperial Trumphant, Cloak, Rozamov, Tombs, Xasthur, Destroyer Of Light, Hubris, Heavy Temple, Uada, Forest Of Legend and many more will play the festival over three days in September of 2018!

Sad news today as we learn that Wormed‘s technical percussive marvel G-Calero, real name Guillermo Calero, has passed away at the age of just 27. Truly sad and Calero was so talented. Our condolences to the band, friends and family of the departed.
Wormed are by far one of the more interesting technical extreme death bands. We highly recommend you check out their recent Krighsu effort. It is more than worth your time and money.Add to My Radar
YOB, the Oregon-based trio that Pitchfork proclaimed “one of the progressive acts of their generation,” will release Our Raw Heart, the band’s eighth full-length album and Relapse Records’ debut, on June 8.
“We’re very excited to share this new music,” says singer/guitar player Mike Scheidt. “We gave it everything we have. Going from an uncertain future in the beginning of 2017, to writing and then recording a new album at the end of it, it was quite a year. We’re very grateful. We’re looking forward to hitting the road again and celebrating decibels and good cheer with friends worldwide. Can’t wait.”
The news of the seven-track album’s release arrives as the band confirm a North American tour, kicking off June 14 at 89th Street in Oklahoma City. The outing, which will feature direct support from Bell Witch, also includes performances at Austin Terror Fest and Mutants of the Monster 2018. A full list of confirmed tour dates is available below.
Our Raw Heart was co-produced by the band and Billy Barnett at Gung Ho Studio in Eugene, Ore., with mastering handled by Heba Kadry (The Mars Volta, Diamanda Galas, Slowdive). Decibel Magazine and Stereogum named the release as one of their most anticipated albums of 2018. Pre-Orders for Our Raw Heart will be available April 10 via Relapse.com.
YOB’s most recent release, Clearing the Path to Ascend, was one of 2014’s most heralded releases, with Rolling Stone saying the music “makes perfect bedfellows of volume and beauty, pain and transcendence.” Stereogum said the four-track album offers “a universe unto itself” while Decibel said the songs were “as riveting as you could ever hope for them to be.”

Hey gang. Tool, Avenged Sevenfold, A Perfect Circle and Alice In Chains cap off the rock solid lineup for the fourth annual Northern Invasion, Saturday, May 12 and Sunday, May 13 at Somerset Amphitheater in Somerset, Wisconsin, just outside the Twin Cities. We decided to compile a little list today of the three sets we are most excited for at the event.
Maynard James Keenan of Tool and A Perfect Circle said, “Looking forward to playing material from the new A Perfect Circle release at Northern Invasion. Bringing new songs to life in a live setting is always exciting.”
Dean DeLeo of Stone Temple Pilots commented, “Stone Temple Pilots are beyond thrilled to be playing Northern Invasion 2018. We are back! It’s going to be a killer weekend of great music—great fun.”
“We spent a lot of time listening to our loyal Invasion fan base over these last several months to create a lineup that celebrates some of the rock legends along with delivering on our reputation for inviting the hottest up-and-comers in the genre,” said Joe Litvag, Executive Producer of Northern Invasion. “Having heroes like Tool, Avenged Sevenfold, Alice In Chains, and Stone Temple Pilots matched with new sensations like Parkway Drive, Black Veil Brides, and Red Sun Rising, I think the fans will respond well. It’s going to be an unforgettable weekend!”

Swedish melodic death metal pioneers AT THE GATES are soon to unleash their much anticipated new album To Drink From The Night Itself on May 18th, 2018 via CENTURY MEDIA RECORDS.
Produced with Russ Russell (Napalm Death, The Haunted, Dimmu Borgir, etc.) at Parlour Studios in the UK, the album follows up 2014’s acclaimed comeback release At War With Reality and will feature conceptual artwork created by Costin Chioreanu / Twilight 13 Media, who already worked with AT THE GATES on At War With Reality.
The album’s front cover can be seen featured above and AT THE GATES vocalist/lyricist Tomas Lindberg checked in about it with the following comment:
“It has once again been an absolute pleasure working creativily with Costin. We had a lot of ideas for what we wanted to get across with the art this time around. Overall they were, not surprisingly, related to the general concept of the record. What is great with Costin is that he understands the band. He knows what we are and where we come from. And me and him also have a strong artistic connection. I have never met anyone that goes so deep into the world of my lyrics and concepts. When I first wrote to him describing my ideas, I was worried that my remarks were perhaps too long and too confusing, only to get back an even longer and very inspired response…
The inspiration for the actual front cover piece is taken from the Pergamon Altar, on display at the Pergamon museum in Berlin. It is of course linked closely to the concept that the whole record is based upon, but more on that later. But I will throw a name out there, for the interested ones; Peter Weiss. I can’t wait to get the whole record in my hands now, as this is just one of the many great artwork pieces that Costin has created for us on “To Drink From The Night Itself“…”

All That Remains’ walking example of male privilege and denial Phil Labonte made a giant ass out of himself yet again by going on Infowars (Disinfowhores) and talking with pedo apologist Milo. The segment was so fucking tone deaf to what is really wrong with society as these smug trolls huffed one another’s gas. Infowars even called Phil the last defender of freedom and metal. To paraphrase Emma González , BULLSHIT!
Google exists if you want to watch the day old choad of a segment. I don’t recommend it and am NOT linking it. Labonte espouses a very fact phobic brand of Libertarian thinking, from what I have always gathered from him. Myself and a lot of LGBTQ fans of OTEP (as well as Otep herself), took him to task recently for repeatedly using “faggot” like it was ok for him to say it, ever. He even mansplained to Otep, a lesbian activist, why it is ok. Dude, fuck that.
Any label that supports All That Remains at this point should take a look in the mirror. The Madness is platforming such fucking idiocy. Infowars even said of Labonte ,“One man is fighting against the pussification of rock music.” Pussies are way stronger than you, chump.
Now Phil is on Infowars probably smirking that he gets to talk to a gay pro troll like Milo who loves offensive words and harming people or doxxing trans people. It is disgusting. Fuck your gun murder apologist nonsense. Fuck your FACT IGNORING support of Milo, who worked with Breitbart to allow NAZIS to copy edit the actual content of the site! You are officially now chumming it with an actual collaborator and basically just became one, Phil.
Milo clearly has major self hate issues he hides behind a cocky veneer, even as he helps people who hate gays.
The REAL freedom in metal is being fought for by anti fascist bands who want more representation, more diversity, more lgbtq, women, POC. Not by your smug cis white male know it all metalcore pop bullshit. I don’t even dislike ATR’s music. I like a lot of poppier metal and rock bands like Pop Evil or Halestorm or Baby Metal, for example. What I don’t like is people helping Trump culture where nothing matters flourish.
Here is an article about how the 2nd Amendment was ratified to PRESERVE SLAVERY!!
God bless the Parkland kids for having more guts than most of the media and the “let’s debate this like adults” wishy washy generation that gets steamrolled and falls for Republican tricks EVERY TIME! Fuck Bi-partisan compromise on kids being murdered. The NRA are literally buying politicians like Marco Rubio who trade dead kids for dollars and in ground pools and cars and then dare to feign like they care to the survivor’s faces.
We should change the names of AR-15s to “Marco Rubio” because they are so easy to buy.

Talib Kweli refused to play the Riot Room in KC after he learned the venue supported booking black metallers Taake. Taake claim to be just about shock rock and used a swastika onstage once. Sorry, but bands who do that shit SHOULD get dragged about it for the rest of their careers. It should have heavy social consequences, not something to chuckle about over at Decibel Beer Fest to your chums and say ,”Remember when I used to flirt with symbolism that millions died because of. I’m so edgy.”
Phil, if you think you are more of an activist than Talib Kweli, I have REAL news for you. And like Otep, I am not entirely against responsible gun owners, but we do NOT have that as our general policy in America. The laws are wayyy too easy. Teens can get an AR-15 easier than a car? Fuck you.
Anyway, it was cool to talk to Talib today on Twitter where he was fighting with a racist black metal apologist and he reshared a few of my tweets I hope y’all will check out. Shout out to Dawn Ray’d.
— Talib Kweli Greene (@TalibKweli) February 23, 2018
Anyhow, yeah… if you think Taake isn’t racist, THIS was their official response to being called on it years ago:
So yeah, let’s stop allowing bands like Taake and All That Remains to coast on a free pass for being dumpster fires in the name of “free speech.” It is not “SJWs” that are ruining society by hoping we are more inclusive and kind to one another or that our kids aren’t mowed down for NRA profits.
Phil, if you can read, here is an article DECIMATING every talking point the NRA ever spouts. Eat shit, all of you murder apologists. Or go run away from the shots fired like the “good guy with a gun” guard who was afraid to go into the school to save the Florida kids as they were slaughtered, despite being armed.
I also know people can change over time. But one way to get the benefit of the doubt is to seem like you REMOTELY GIVE A FUCK! Not by being a “well, actually” defensive mansplainer after kids are massacred.
Too many great bands these days exist who aren’t shit heads to bother with continuing the careers of outdated moronic meatbags who help enable the worst aspects of America with their ignorant political views. I am done. Billy Corgan said that “SJWS” are the same as the KKK. Eff the Pumpkins reunion. Done.
Wayyyyy over the toxic fact resistant apologists out there in rock and metal. Get a life and help make life better for the World, not centering trolls, nazis, gun nuts and fuckbois.
A school shooter doesn't give a shit if you are a democrat or a republican. This should concern us all. It could be your child.

Renowned photographer ESTER SEGARRA has been an integral part of the worldwide heavy music landscape for over 15 years. SEGARRA’s multitude of photos have been featured in every major metal magazine, a wide array of critically acclaimed albums, some of the most popular band photos circulating the internet, and has worked for perennial artists such as MAYHEM, ROTTING CHRIST, WATAIN, DARKTHRONE, ABBATH, ELECTRIC WIZARD, and many more.
After years of compiling her work, ESTER SEGARRA will release her anthology photo-book titled ‘Ars Umbra’ later this year via Season of Mist. The ‘Ars Umbra’ anthology will feature an original score composed by Uno Bruniusson (GRAVE PLEASURES, IN SOLITUDE, PROCESSION, and more).
Regarding the book announcement, ESTER SEGARRA comments: “The anthology, ‘Ars Umbra’ celebrates 15 years of my music photography. Pictures and music are presented in the form of a photo-book with an added original soundtrack, which I had specially commissioned from percussionist extraordinaire, Uno Bruniusson (ex-IN SOLITUDE, DEATH ALLEY, PROCESSION). His music has been created to provide a rhythm, a mind-space that alters the experience of the book. This project has consumed me for the last two years and I am very glad and honoured to have it finally released via Season of Mist, which is most fitting; considering their eclectic roster of bands, their boundary pushing attitude and their graphic art outlet E-Kunst. Having worked many times with this label before, I know their fire is as strong as mine. The time will soon come to unleash and fuel the flames of ‘Ars Umbra’!”

I hope everyone will read the powerful Jeniffer Wright piece in HarpersBazaar about toxic masculinity HERE.
Various musicians from across genres have spoken out for more sane gun legislation and the NRA out of politician’s pockets in the wake of the ghastly Parkland massacre. Here are a few sample tweets below.
When is it enough? How many children dead before the value of human life is worth more than our obsession with convenient gun ownership?

Legalize every drug. Reinvest the majority of funds allotted to the drug war into treatment and education. Use any funds left over to set up a nationwide gun buy-back program, simultaneously outlawing the sale of firearms to civilians. Ban the fucking things outright after a year

So for 2018 my co-hort Jessica and I are gonna try and each give a montly recap of our own 4 fave records each month. Kind of keep you all abreast of what we have been digging as listeners besides our regular news posts and rants and raves. Check out her picks HERE.
Honestly I have mostly been listening to Reputation by Taylor Swift (and trying to help Globelamp and other Swifties get Taylor to fire her problematic asshole music video director Joseph Kahn for his incessant hatred of pit bulls that helps get dogs killed). I have also been rocking the new Andrew WK singles over and over and over to lift my spirits daily, hahaha. BUT the metal I have been digging has been decidedly fearsome.

Shout out to Machine Head tonight. The guys narrowly avoided a potentially deadly accident. You can see the footage below.
The band are just near the top of their North American Tour.
We are really glad they are gonna be able to continue and no one was harmed. Catharsis was also picked by staff writer Jessica as one of her top 4 records of January for our site. Nothing more cathartic than living to rock another day!

Winter may be around the bend but climate change is real and you will not find apathy from the Denver doom riff inclined metallic/nature honoring covenant known as Green Druid . Who better than druids to know with a grim certainty that the Earth needs our help? Want to hear one of the most timely and heavy slow molten lava toe tapping tempo songs on environmental issues all year? "The End of Men" has got you covered with a captivating psychedelic visualizer video HERE. We all have to embrace this moment in time and face this era with our most determined artwork, habits and as much pragmatism as we can muster in order to survive. "The End of Men is a commentary on the general state of decay that our planet is currently in," comments guitarist and vocalist Graham Zander. "In recent years it has become increasingly common for people among our generation to feel an overall sense of doom. This stems from everything from the impending climate apocalypse to world politics."
