I found out through the homies Vowws IG page, one of my favorite bands. Listening to the brilliant industrial post pop scrawl crawl of “Charm and Demand” right now, actually. This whole thing looks like it will be dope af. I also hear that Vein record is awesome, everyone keeps saying. Heckity heck yeah.

Deftones announce tour dates for Spring

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Monday, February 29, 2016 at 11:14 AM (PST)

Taking a break from watching that surprisingly funny Netflix show Love to tell you kids that Deftones have a bevvy of upcoming shows (including a SXSW Spin showcase date avec CHVRCHES). I for one am stoked to hear more of GORE, despite Deftones own guitarist not seeming as keen on it in recent comments as the rest of the band. He probably was exaggerating his displeasure at the current direction however, since for the last 4 album press cycles or whatever Stephen Carpenter has been saying he loves Meshuggah in practically every interview.

What has always made Deftones great (and why I particularly love the S/T record best) is their variety but ability to also still deliver the heavy. As long as they don’t transform into Team Sleep (which would be odd since Deftones were in full swing first) there is room for Deftones to keep their experimental and pretty side flourishing.

Anyway, these dates are sure to feature a variety of tunes for fans of different eras. Dates below.

Song of the Week: Deftones’ fluid “Prayers/Triangles” track

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Sunday, February 7, 2016 at 11:21 PM (PST)

Deftones have a new record on the way called Swish. Or was it Gore? Yeah, I think it is Gore.

Merch Direct has some pretty cool Tame Impala-esque pop art meets perfume bottle/high fashion fonts and Nu Snapbacks vibes going on HERE for those looking for some tasty related gear, but the best treat is the new, hard to classify single “Prayers/Triangles”. It’s a watery track almost reminiscent guitar-wise of Chino’s Palms project with former members of Isis (yes, the fucking band). It might even be my favorite track from the band since “Minerva” from the underrated sick as fuck S/T record where they really learned to temper their inner fire with patience, though there have certainly been plenty of killer songs since then to now.

But yeah, this song is what’s up. In 2016 more than ever we can find ways to collage and buck expectation, be it the sensual yet bright, tropical house infused future pop of newcomer Eriel Indigo (who is likely to be huge) , the morphic funk and street aware R&B of Lion Babe or, to stay in the metal world and not freak some of y’all out, the psychotic jazz and black metal melange of DHG or Shining, for example.

Deftones can make you feel dreamy, lifted or rabble-roused, but you always feel something, even if it is the familiar sensation of surrendering to fate and all the unknown yet electric variables that entails.

All hail the kings, crowns glistening, etc.

Alt metal visionaries Deftones have finally released a song from the already legendary unreleased “lost” record Eros, the final body of work to feature bassist Chi Cheng. I wont lie, this song “Smile” (released to shout out Chi’s memory one year since his death) really choked me up. Chi was hysterical, beyond talented and super cool. His Easter Egg on the Deftones self-titled CD was so great. Dude got a raw deal but thank God we have his contributions to the metal and punk rock scenes. R.I.P. Chi and thank you to the ‘Tones on behalf of all the fans for this meaningful gesture. Bump this beautiful shit LOUD, y’all.

Deftones announce May 2014 Wild West tour dates

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 3:25 PM (PST)

Def news for ‘ Tones fans in the wild west. The Grammy award winning groovesters will hit the road this May for a bunch of dates that focus on Texas and Oklahoma. Tour kicks off with the Rocklahoma festival in Oklahoma on May 23rd. The remaining performances take place in Texas, including their appearance at the Free Press Summer Festival in Houston on May 31st. Tickets go on sale today.

Do yourself a favor and grab a ticket if you can, as  Deftones remain one of the most forward thinking and game changing bands going in this crummy world of copycats.  You gotta give them props for never compromising like many other bands that were once tagged “Nu”. Hopefully they will do some full U.S. stuff soon and take out some cool bands like Delain and Islander as openers (hint hint, Chino). You know that’d be a dope tour.

Most recently, Deftones joined Avenged Sevenfold for their headlining U.S. tour last October and of course blew them off the stage. Deftones are touring in support of their seventh studio album Koi No Yokan, which was released in November on 2012. It debuted at No. 11 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, with over 65,000 sold its first week, and spawned two Top Five hits at Rock radio (“Tempest” and “Swerve”).  Koi No Yokan has also met with critical acclaim. Revolver named it their “Album of the Year” at the magazine’s Golden God Awards, while SPIN selected it as one of its Top 50 Albums of 2012. The NY Post also hailed it as “one of the best rock albums of the year.” Watch the video for “Swerve City” and get funky with your old lady .

Well, I’ve got to get back to spliffingly binge watching Clone Wars on Netflix but you can click HERE for da tour dates.

Deftones bassist Chi Cheng dies

Posted by Metal Dude on Sunday, April 14, 2013 at 8:03 AM (PST)

Early in the morning yesterday, Deftones bassist Chi Cheng passed away. He was 42 years old and had been left in a semi-conscious coma since being involved in a November 4th, 2008 car accident. He never fully recovered and had been in and out of hospitals for different infections. Chi’s mother wrote the following statement in regards to his death:

“Our dearest Family,

This is the hardest thing to write to you. Your love and heart and devotion to Chi was unconditional and amazing. I know that you will always remember him as a giant of a man on stage with a heart for every one of you. He was taken to the emergency room and at 3 am today his heart just suddenly stopped. He left this world with me singing songs he liked in his ear.

He fought the good fight. You stood by him sending love daily. He knew that he was very loved and never alone. I will write more later. I will be going through the oneloveforchi and any other information may not be reliable. If you have any stories or messages to share please send them to the onelove site. Please hold Mae and Ming and the siblings and especially Chi’s son, Gabriel in your prayers. It is so hard to let go.

With great love and “Much Respect!” Mom J (and Chi)”

R.I.P. Chi, thank you for your awesome music. We’ll never forget you.

Show Review: Deftones and Periphery-New York, NY – March 9, 2013

Posted by NichTheHair on Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at 5:22 AM (PST)

Greetings Cretins.

As I write to you today, my aching body is still reminded of the physical exertion it underwent to bring you this review. Yes darlings, I will gladly step into a sold out, full-floor, raging mosh pit to bring you a fresh feast of performance ferocity for your eyes to enjoy. Deftones had to reschedule this show due to Slurricane Sandy, so I was not surprised that the show was complete madness. Even though Washington DC’s Periphery successfully prefaced the pandemonium with their precision and poise, the people could not be pacified. The crowd wanted their long overdue headliner- and boy howdy, did they get it!

Deftones announce new album and tour

Posted by Metal Dude on Thursday, August 30, 2012 at 7:35 PM (PST)

Deftones have set Koi No Yokan as the name of their seventh full-length studio album, which will be released on November 13th. Like their previous album Diamond Eyes, it was produced by Nick Raskulinecz, who has also worked with bands like Foo Fighters, Rush, Alice in Chains and many others.

The title’s album is Japanese for a feeling that is similar to (but not exactly the same as) love at first sight. It’s the sense a person gets upon meeting someone, where they just “know” they are going to fall in love. It implies that future love is inevitable. Interesting title.

Just a month before the release of Koi No Yokan, Deftones will be back on the road. All the dates can be found here.

Deftones set to begin work on new album

Posted by Tommy on Monday, May 2, 2011 at 10:14 AM (PST)

California alt-metal heavy hitters Deftones have announced in an interview that they will begin work on material for the new album these next couple of weeks.

Band frontman Chino Moreno says, “We’re going to have a month off [from touring], but in that month we’re talking about going in and starting to write again, maybe even two or three weeks in a rehearsal spot just recording ideas and keeping it going,” he said. “[The process will resume in September] so if all goes well hopefully we’ll have some product for early next year. Everyone has their own kind of little recording devices and are putting down ideas, but with a band like us we find that when we actually get together in a rehearsal spot where there’s no distractions and we can work together cohesively as a band, that’s really when we’re writing songs. Even at sound check we’ll jam and do things, but it’s not like we ever stop and say, ‘Okay, let’s keep going on this,’ because there’s so many distractions. So we’re not that good at working on the road. When we get home and we actually seclude ourselves in a little room, that’s when it will start.”

Deftones’s  latest “Diamond Eyes” was released in 2010 via Warner Brothers
