I just learned about an interesting guitar record coming out that is called Symphinity, which came about as creators and twins Benny and Brian Goodman debated the world’s greatest guitarists. The project is billed as “one-part classical composition, one-part guitar virtuosity and one-part cinematic drama” and sounds pretty interesting. It also features some of the rock scene’s favorite stars, from a wide array of acts.

The project is comprised of Benny Goodman (keyboards, guitars), Brian Goodman (keyboards, programming), Kelly Kereliuk (guitar), Cory Paza (bass), Paul Lorenco (drums) and Sioban Cronin (strings). Featured artists on the first album in a planned series include Oli Herbert (All That Remains), Ron ‘Bumblefoot’ Thal (Sons of Apollo, Guns N’ Roses), Jason Costa, Ethan Brosh, Satchel (Steel Panther), Angel Vivaldi, Conrad Simon, and Matthew LaPierre.

The record also features some of the final recorded music of Oli Herbert, who was very excited to be involved. I don’t generally support All That Remains because of some of the singer’s politics and statements but this is a separate Oli thing. He was quoted before his death regarding Symphinity that ,“With All That Remains, I’m doing about 16 bar solos on every song, so I have a very, kind of, modest amount of time to say what I need to say. With this, [Benny]’s like ‘Hey man, I want you to play over like 64 bars,’ Oh, man. So I have to really think differently about my structure and approach. It’s been cool, you know? It’s kind of like more is more, and it lets me really get that side out of me…I’m pleased to be a part of it.”

“It was my honor and privilege to add a small part to this album with so many amazing musicians on it. It made me want to get better. And practice more. But I’m in Steel Panther and well… I have partying to do also.”
—Satchel, Steel Panther

“It’s been a privilege to work with some of the highest-caliber of musicianship on SYMPHINITY. It’s been an even greater pleasure to honor our dearly departed friend and musical wizard Oli Herbert.”
—Angel Vivaldi

Oli Herbert, Woman 2 first day sales, Castle, Chelsea Wolfe/APC news items

Posted by Metal Riot on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at 1:35 PM (PST)

Slew of music stories for you goblins today. First though, CW Supergirl is finally bringing Lex Luthor onto the show. Please write them and tell them to consider me for the role as I am bald enough (too many tats though).

The metal world was rocked by the sad news of Oli Herbert from All That Remains passing away unexpectedly, with many people expressing how nice he was and what a sad turn of events it is. I have definitely stopped being a fan of the band some time ago, but politics aside, this is a super sad situation for everyone involved and we wish them sincere condolences. Oli certainly was talented and was loved by a lot of people.

Some mourners below:

Definitely shitty. That said and politics NOT aside,  I waited a day to write that I ALSO wish sincere condolences to the families of children murdered in preventable gun nut school rampages almost daily which ARE mostly acted out by white supremacists who are all gassed up by toxic Info Wars who All That Remains’ singer Phil went on recently, so I hope if he doesn’t like death he reconsiders some of his horrible positions on poorly regulated gun access and shady outlets. It is genuinely sad that his friend died but I also don’t think helping Phil stay famous to spout whataboutisms, pretend “f-gg-t” isn’t a harmful word and other macho nonsense was the most awesome life choice for anyone in that band just because they got paid.

I have almost more dead friends than living at this point and so am by no means mocking the end of someone’s life, just hoping it will also cause the singer of this band to do some soul searching on the fleeting nature of time and how glorifying poor gun regulation and the NRA only brings more death to OTHER people’s family and friend groups. And how ANY right wing power leads to mental health care for depression and instability being put way on the backburner. Sorry if that’s “too soon” but that is the same thing Republicans say every time we ask for meaningful reform. I am beyond offended by anyone who is supporting or enabling their platforms in 2018 under Trump.

In other shitty news:

In WONDERFUL news, the WOMAN 2 Anti-Nazi comp had a super big first day:

All That Remains’ walking example of male privilege and denial Phil Labonte made a giant ass out of himself yet again by going on Infowars (Disinfowhores) and talking with pedo apologist Milo. The segment was so fucking tone deaf to what is really wrong with society as these smug trolls huffed one another’s gas. Infowars even called Phil the last defender of freedom and metal. To paraphrase Emma González , BULLSHIT!

Google exists if you want to watch the day old choad of a segment. I don’t recommend it and am NOT linking it. Labonte espouses a very fact phobic brand of Libertarian thinking, from what I have always gathered from him. Myself and a lot of LGBTQ fans of OTEP (as well as Otep herself), took him to task recently for repeatedly using “faggot” like it was ok for him to say it, ever. He even mansplained to Otep, a lesbian activist, why it is ok. Dude, fuck that.

Any label that supports All That Remains at this point should take a look in the mirror. The Madness is platforming such fucking idiocy. Infowars even said of Labonte ,“One man is fighting against the pussification of rock music.” Pussies are way stronger than you, chump.

Now Phil is on Infowars probably smirking that he gets to talk to a gay pro troll like Milo who loves offensive words and harming people or doxxing trans people. It is disgusting. Fuck your gun murder apologist nonsense. Fuck your FACT IGNORING support of Milo, who worked with Breitbart to allow NAZIS to copy edit the actual content of the site! You are officially now chumming it with an actual collaborator and basically just became one, Phil.

Milo clearly has major self hate issues he hides behind a cocky veneer, even as he helps people who hate gays.

The REAL freedom in metal is being fought for by anti fascist bands who want more representation, more diversity, more lgbtq, women, POC. Not by your smug cis white male know it all metalcore pop bullshit. I don’t even dislike ATR’s music. I like a lot of poppier metal and rock bands like Pop Evil or Halestorm or Baby Metal, for example. What I don’t like is people helping Trump culture where nothing matters flourish.

Here is an article about how the 2nd Amendment was ratified to PRESERVE SLAVERY!!

God bless the Parkland kids for having more guts than most of the media and the “let’s debate this like adults” wishy washy generation that gets steamrolled and falls for Republican tricks EVERY TIME! Fuck Bi-partisan compromise on kids being murdered. The NRA are literally buying politicians like Marco Rubio who trade dead kids for dollars and in ground pools and cars and then dare to feign like they care to the survivor’s faces.

Talib Kweli refused to play the Riot Room in KC after he learned the venue supported booking black metallers Taake. Taake claim to be just about shock rock and used a swastika onstage once. Sorry, but bands who do that shit SHOULD get dragged about it for the rest of their careers. It should have heavy social consequences, not something to chuckle about over at Decibel Beer Fest to your chums and say ,”Remember when I used to flirt with symbolism that millions died because of. I’m so edgy.”

Phil, if you think you are more of an activist than Talib Kweli, I have REAL news for you. And like Otep, I am not entirely against responsible gun owners, but we do NOT have that as our general policy in America. The laws are wayyy too easy. Teens can get an AR-15 easier than a car? Fuck you.

Anyway, it was cool to talk to Talib today on Twitter where he was fighting with a racist black metal apologist and he reshared a few of my tweets I hope y’all will check out. Shout out to Dawn Ray’d.

Anyhow, yeah… if you think Taake isn’t racist, THIS was their official response to being called on it years ago:

So yeah, let’s stop allowing bands like Taake and All That Remains to coast on a free pass for being dumpster fires in the name of “free speech.” It is not “SJWs” that are ruining society by hoping we are more inclusive and kind to one another or that our kids aren’t mowed down for NRA profits.

Phil, if you can read, here is an article DECIMATING every talking point the NRA ever spouts. Eat shit, all of you murder apologists. Or go run away from the shots fired like the “good guy with a gun” guard who was afraid to go into the school to save the Florida kids as they were slaughtered, despite being armed.

Oh, and to hell with Chris Barnes for thinking those kids included crisis actors. You are extra cancelled. Never supporting you again. Or Megadeth. Or Danzig.

I also know people can change over time. But one way to get the benefit of the doubt is to seem like you REMOTELY GIVE A FUCK! Not by being a “well, actually” defensive mansplainer after kids are massacred.

Too many great bands these days exist who aren’t shit heads to bother with continuing the careers of outdated moronic meatbags who help enable the worst aspects of America with their ignorant political views. I am done. Billy Corgan said that “SJWS” are the same as the KKK. Eff the Pumpkins reunion. Done.

Wayyyyy over the toxic fact resistant apologists out there in rock and metal. Get a life and help make life better for the World, not centering trolls, nazis, gun nuts and fuckbois.

Album Review: All That Remains – “The Order Of Things”

Posted by Morgan Y Evans - Walking Bombs on Thursday, February 12, 2015 at 10:41 AM (PST)

All That Remains are one of the most controversial bands in metal, a fact which often overshadows their music. While Phil Labonte has certainly been in the headlines lately (and the band’s last record A War You Cannot Win‘s hit “Stand Up” was #1 on Active Rock), the group has unfortunately been more synonymous with twitter banter and potty mouth behavior than their music.

“You have to adapt to the world around you as opposed to expecting everything to adapt to your perspective,” claims vocalist Labonte in a recent press release. “You can’t really control what goes on in your life, you can only control your reaction. I’ve gotten a certain amount of peace from embracing this truth. That’s the way things go. This is literally The Order of Things.”

Overall this record is their best synergy of styles with “Bite My Tongue” in particular really fusing the faster NWOAHM sound with their more recent embrace of melodic hard rock traits. With new album The Order Of Things, I tried to take the band on their own merits as a group, but I did have to take a tangent into social concerns first. For the full review see BELOW.

I suppose you could file this under the “knew it would happen” category. Once powerhouse metalcore leaders, All That Remains now seem to be unable to fill their own shadow. Mediocre and catchy melody run rampant through this release, along with Phil’s vocals going even further away from say, The Weak Willed. Am I gripping to the edifice of a decadent past? Maybe, but they could at least fake a metal album, or do a concept pretending to be a metal band. Something, just not this.
