Album Review: Black Cobra – “Imperium Simulacra”

Black-Cobra-Imperium-Simulacra-46661-1

Black Cobra are a band with a sense of purpose. It’s evident if you listen to
any of the sludge punk duo’s onslaught filled and rhythmically rewarding
records that the band cut their teeth on many great bands before them and are
keen to carry the torch. A little bit Melvins, a bit of Karp riff charge and
yet a much more rawboned execution with an emphasis on a live sounding
insistence ensures this band could play with any metal or punk band and more
than hold their own.

Some people wrongfully think of legends Earth as a one style band. While, for
instance, “Badgers Bane” and, say, “Tibetan Quaaludes” both feature long,
droned out guitars with an emphasis on feel, there are still lots of subtle
differences related to the year of composition, intent of meaning, etc. Black
Cobra, like Motorhead or Black Tusk, also get kind of pigeonholed as a rad but
mostly one trick pony but that sells their action packed performances and
kinetic records far short.

Let’s check out new sci-fi infused record Imperium Simulacra (order HERE).

“Challenger Deep” arrives victoriously, charging in with giant balls. I am
loving how the vocals, particularly on title track “Imperium Simulacra” are
kind of sounding more and more like a punk rock version of Venom these days ,
a bit more tangible to understand and more snarled. As always the band are
tight as fuck, rattling out fist pumping anthems that tow the line between
poison spitting High On Fire charge and locked in machine gun snare and payoff
riff build (particularly during “Eye Among The Blind”).

Ohio volume squad, LO-PAN, is readying to take to the streets again on a mammoth live excursion alongside San Francisco’s Black Cobra. The journey will commence in Phoenix  on August 18th and wind through nearly three dozen cities, coming to a close in Oakland on October 2nd.

Comments the band, “LO-PAN is proud to be doing our part to support the oil and gas industry of America! Land of the Free home of the Brave. Seriously though anyone have an unlimited gas card they want to donate to our mission from god? Also, Black Cobra rules and we are very excited to support them on this trek.”

BLACK COBRA today announces a more than month-long US Tour, set to begin in late August and running into the beginning of October.

 916

With thirty-two cities confirmed to endure the BLACK COBRA live treatment at press time, the actions begin in Phoenix, Arizona on August 28th, then spiraling though the Southeast, up the East Coast and back across the country in a downward slash on their way back to their Bay Area homelands. Direct support for BLACK COBRA on all dates will be provided by Ohio riff rock quartet, Lo Pan.

With relentless dexterity and viciousness, as a meager duo, San Francisco’s BLACK COBRA delivers an even more concussive attack on stage than their already decimating recordings relay, with a backline to blow away bands with lineups more than twice their size. The band’s unhinged sludge metal loaded with neck-mangling time switch-ups and songwriting as devastating as their delivery is loud, unloaded with the most rampant punk rock energy, BLACK COBRA has proven their live devastation with endless devotion since their 2001 inception, the band having played nearly seven hundred shows worldwide since then.

Stand by for updates from BLACK COBRA as the band soon records their next LP, due for release in early 2015.

The decimating metal/sludge duo that is BLACK COBRA has crawled out of the shadows with their first shows since two one-off cross-continental gigs in January, proclaiming an upcoming May decimation of the West Coast!

The newly planned five-day, five-city run will originate in BLACK COBRA’s San Francisco hometown on May 22nd, then systematically shredding through Fresno, Pacifica, Portland and Seattle. Providing opening support for the trek will be California-based noise metal outfit, The Cutthroats 9 (featuring members of Unsane, Death Angel and -16-), and Norwegian Grammy-winning noise/punk outfit, Årabrot.

Preceding the new West Coast tour, BLACK COBRA will raid Portland to take part in the annual Stumpfest on April 26th, performing alongside sludge metal visionaries, Yob, and gritty doom unit, Diesto.

Additional live outings will be announced in the coming weeks. BLACK COBRA is currently constructing new material; additional news on the band’s 2014 actions will be released in the near future.

Music Video: Black Cobra’s “The Crimson Blade”

Posted by Fireball13 on Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at 8:45 AM (PST)

California doom metallers Black Cobra have released the music video for their song “The Crimson Blade” and you can check out the unique, sinister video right here. This is the first official video to be released off their 2011-released Invernal LP.

This video was conceived and constructed by the band themselves and director Greg Downing (Glitter Wizard, Buffalo Tooth). It was filmed in three days for absolutely no money. The plot portrays the concept of the song, following one man as he devolves to a previous state of humanity and resorts to cannibalism in a post-apocalyptic world. During the filming of the gory visual depiction, actor Landon Bates actually ended up accidentally cutting himself multiple times, with actual wounds fueling some of the bloody scenes.

Members of the band stated: “The video’s concept was a collaboration between director Greg Downing and ourselves. We were familiar with his work in the bands Glitter Wizard and Buffalo Tooth and he was enthusiastic about working with us as well. In general, it’s about isolation, paranoia and desperation. The utter darkness also gives it an overall feel of confusion. We’re really stoked on how it came together.”

Black Cobra Announce Tour of Australia & New Zealand With Fu Manchu

Posted by JDKleinhans on Monday, March 26, 2012 at 12:41 PM (PST)

Following their devastating shows at SXSW last week — both as part of the massive ToneDeaf Touring showcase as well as the Southern Lord/TPOTR/Brooklyn Vegan rager — Black Cobra have just confirmed a Spring tour of New Zealand and Australia with stoner rock icons Fu Manchu! The trek hits three cities in New Zealand then skips over to Australia for another eight shows, with several of the appearances confirmed as Black Cobra headlining shows without Fu Manchu.

This all comes in addition to the previously announced forthcoming Black Cobra tour actions including supporting Corrosion of Conformity through Europe alongside Zoroaster in April on the way to the annual Roadburn Festival in Tilburg, Holland directly before the new tour, as well as massive North American tour supporting CoC once again, along with Torche and Gaza later in the Summer.
