Valkyrie will return in 2020 after five years since their last record. Newest track “The Choice” is pure classic metal influenced ear candy to me, just riff after hummable riff like a perfect groove, mid temp ride out into a melodic pasture full of weird creatures as you contemplate your past with longing. The dual guitars and great, organic feel of this one is reminding me of the best work of The Sword, Slough Feg and even a little Blue Oyster Cult “Veteran of the Psychic Wars”. This song is absolutely on my wavelength.

The Virginia based band will release Fear via Relapse on July 24th.

Baroness have released the driving and magnificent “Throw Me An Anchor” from Gold & Grey, probably my favorite single from the release yet in turns of energy, performance and composition. Plus, just how good have they gotten at those big melodic choruses? It’s getting unreal. This song also has an almost maddeningly dope proggy outro that somehow reminds me of Blood Brothers and Rush at the same time. Here for it!

Additionally, Baroness will be touring Europe September through November with larger than life rabble rousers Volbeat and mighty hard rockers Danko Jones. As of Friday, May 24th , Tickets will be on sale HERE .

Wow. End of an era. News has broke that longtime Baroness guitarist Pete Adams, who played a HUGE role in the band’s ascent to arguably the coolest sludge prog pop hybrid band just about ever, has left the band amicably. So glad I saw their first return show post crash. Pete will still be active in the awesome af Valkyrie (which he plays in with his brother) and Baroness have even announced a replacement already.  We are sure they will still be great. Still, we gotta toast Pete on his way out as watching him and John together was always magic and felt like a real brotherhood as well. Maximum eternal hails.

Read a lengthy statement from everyone BELOW. It is warm and inspiring, actually.

Baroness release “Shock Me” video

Posted by Morgan Y Evans - Walking Bombs on Thursday, April 7, 2016 at 9:25 AM (PST)

Baroness remain super skilled at creating a certain escapism that nonetheless makes you feel all your aches, pains and hard won victories. There is emotional resonance in their material that far and away rings more bells than, say, blood gargling black metal under a moldy rock.

“Shock Me” from Purple now has a fitting video, directed by Don Tyler and John Baizley with art direction by Karen Jerzyk. It’s a lot more interesting than the live studio “Chlorine & Wine” video, which is such a powerful tune that could’ve benefited from the aesthetic play and colorful pseudo-expressionism that sprouts wonderful seeds in this new clip effectively.

Not to mention, even by high Baroness standards this tune has not only a memorable chorus but a serious burner of a guitar solo.

Baroness streaming “Purple” in entirety

Posted by Morgan Y Evans - Walking Bombs on Thursday, December 17, 2015 at 9:40 AM (PST)

Baroness are streaming hotly awaited album Purple in full. The record is a bit heavier than Yellow and Green were but retain a lot of the cool dynamics that made those records an evolution. While Blue Record is still my favorite of their colorful career, this album is brilliant and has some seriously great tunes like sludgy and precision drumming opener “Morningstar” (sludgier than most recent Mastodon), the proggy “Kerosene”, hooky “Shock Me” and the sing a long/bad ass “Chlorine & Wine”. They have more than earned their staying power. One of the best bands in the rock world.

“While we realize the accident is obviously of interest, we have gone over that particular story’s details at length over the past few years,” Baizley says. “We feel that this album not only addresses but puts a punctuation mark on that story. Baroness existed before the accident and will continue to exist, and we’d rather talk about what we’ve created with Purple than let one side-story overtake or define who we are as a band.”

Unholy Passion, Batman!!!

Pete from Baroness is the “Special Guest Guitarist” in Samhain.

From Facebook:

We’re incredibly excited to finally start talking about this. Pete might be the biggest Danzig/Misfits/Samhain fan i know, and he’ll be playing a series of Samhain-headlining shows this fall, the first full Samhain shows since 1985. I think every musician secretly dreams of joining their favorite band onstage but it never seems to actually happen. We’re all really excited for Pete.

Thinking man’s melodic sludge survivors Baroness have been posting a lot of cool content on their Facebook page the last few days. I for one love Yellow & Green and think anyone who doesn’t needs their ears checked. This is great music.

Amongst the choicer posts is a great live video of the band in their finest element, live on stage. The performance of “Green Theme”  features the post crash line-up from San Diego’s The Casbah last summer and can be worshiped HERE.

Baroness release live “March To The Sea” video

Posted by Morgan Y Evans - Walking Bombs on Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at 8:19 AM (PST)

eshf_baronessdougseymourcrop2_1Baroness have released a live video for their bellowed yet catchy as all get out Yellow & Green track “March To The Sea” (not a Pelican cover). The video is live and taken from their sold out return show with Tombs and Pallbearer at Union Transfer in PA. This was the band’s first time electric on stage after their UK bus crash and was a night to remember. I was there and I believe they opened with “Bullhead’s Psalm” and that this song was second or third, but they have comped it with footage of the band taking the stage to chants of “Welcome Back”. Click Here for a recent review of that show I wrote.

This is a passionate video and a glimpse of what it felt like to be there that night.
