In the eleventh hour, I bring you my September wrap-up. Holy fucking shit September was one hell of a month. Fortunately, the new music has been good inside and outside of metal. Whether you’ve been trying to avoid Supreme Court-Senate-Nomination-Bullshit, or you’ve been raising all the hell about it you can, whether you’ve been working with survivors in an emotional time of need, or doing your best to survive on your own, whether you’ve been writing to cope, or just playing your show to get through – September was rough as shit.

I’m glad to come back at the end of every month, especially on months that this is the only post I write for Metal Riot, and share with y’all what I thought was really cool throughout the month.

Check out the four albums I enjoy the most this month here.

Fit For A King scooped up for Warped Tour

Posted by Morgan Y Evans - Walking Bombs on Thursday, December 18, 2014 at 6:07 AM (PST)

Fit For A King‘s popularity is certainly related to their solid live show as well as their songwriting. They are one of the better younger bands I have seen live in recent years, showing up most of the bands on the Eternal Enemies Tour (with the exception of Kublai Khan who have been killin’ it, flat out). Anyhow, the band behind Slave To Nothing have been selected for Warped Tour again next year.

Slave To Nothing had a remarkable debut at #49 on the Billboard Charts and the band will be on all the Monster Stage North American dates at Warped. Not bad for a little band from Dallas, TX.

Eternal Enemies at Upstate Concert Hall (Show Pics)

Posted by Morgan Y Evans - Walking Bombs on Monday, December 8, 2014 at 6:49 AM (PST)

Upstate Concert Hall in Clifton Park, NY regularly throws diverse shows from Metric to Every Time I Die to Mindless Self Indulgence. It was a no brainer that The Eternal Enemies Tour stop at the mid sized venue was going to be really hyper and packed with kids. Not only is this where the beef with Emmure and The Acacia Strain kind of reached an apex at one point, but it also is where they best buried the hatchet. This show was actually really positive, even with everyone screaming angry shit all night, haha.

From Emmure pals Sylar (also from Queens) setting it off like a kind of metalcore Linkin Park to Kublai Khan from Texas completely killing it onstage with a strong message of unity to the wall of heavy that slams into the crowd whenever The Acacia Strain hits, it was a good night for Upstate, NY.  I can’t believe Ryan from Fit For A King managed to sing his whole set in a long sleeve shirt and not faint. Vincent from The Acacia Strain even gave shout outs to Ted’s Fish Fry and Stewart’s Ice Cream (that’s a regional reference if you know the Troy/Albany area), which was pretty amusing.

Photogs Matt Slater and Richie Bilyou got shots of the action for y’all.

“Slave To Nothing” is the title track for the bands forthcoming new album, which will be released on October 14th via Solid State Records. Produced by Will Putney (Suicide Silence, Miss May I), the album is both the heaviest and the most varied songwriting that the band has delivered up to this point.

Album Review: Fit For A King – “Slave To Nothing”

Posted by Morgan Y Evans - Walking Bombs on Friday, September 26, 2014 at 9:24 AM (PST)

Fit For A King‘s Slave To Nothing is impressive, a step forward for the band while retaining enough old sound to appeal to fans familiar with their history. The Will Putney (Suicide Silence, Miss May I) assisted production is perfect for the band. I would kill to work with Will and the band are obviously relishing their collaboration. Solid State Records is matching their greatest releases with this. It certainly is up to par with Demon Hunter’s best, with a display of soaring melody plus a whiplash groove to please fans looking to fill the Chimaira or God Forbid voids as well.

“Young & Undeserving” just sounds mean starting out, but really takes off with spacious guitars and melodic vocals that would please fans of Saosin’s brighter moments of the Cove era. The title track of the album was my least favorite at first, but on repeated listens the repeated shouts and determination felt genuine. Lead verse intro riff also pounds and grooves hard. Kudos to Jared Easterling completely owning this album with a beastly drum arrangements. The record doesn’t reach the ferocity of the also groove heavy Those Who Fear’s latest, but it does really bludgeon at times and with a good sense of purpose. “Cleanse My soul” is great for an introspective singalong drive with a detour or two into deathcore country breakdowns and back, while “The Final Thoughts OF A Dying Man” has some gorgeous lead guitar runs that would make Within the Ruins fans alert, proving Fit For A King aren’t just another band with “King” in their name who are trend-wagon moshing. The guitar work and pining for younger innocence on this mixed with a will to grow get a big thumbs up. This record will make a real fun live show as well, no doubt.

What are we afraid of?

fit-for-a-king-creation-destruction-coverTexas metalcore group Fit For A King have released a lyric video for their new single “Warpath.”  The song comes from the band’s forthcoming Solid State Records debut, Creation/Destruction. They are set to release the album March 12, 2013.

Vocalist Ryan Kirby commented on “Warpath:”

“We felt like ‘Warpath’ showed all the different elements this album has to offer. When the song was originally written we had no intentions of it being a ‘single’ but once we played with the structure and added vocals it instantly became one of our favorites. Plus, we used a clip of the song in the first studio update we put out and got a very good response!”
