Oakland’s doomiest sons, Secrets Of The Sky have nothing to fear in terms underground acceptance. The band’s already garnered critical acclaim for their past work and are set to return with Metal Blade release Pathways, a record that builds on their already formidable mix of styles with even more dynamics. “Angel In Vines” is very Type O meets Daylight Dies reminiscent to my ears, in the best way!  Waves of sound will hurl you across vast spaces and the new music video is a dance of life versus the toxic.

Elaborates guitarist Clayton Bartholomew, “For this video, we went back to director Andrew Nethery, who also did the video for the song ‘Decline’ from our first record, To Sail Black Waters. He did a great job for that video and was an easy guy to work with. For the ‘Angel In Vines’ video, we let him run with his own vision. The song itself relates to the loss of innocence, and he found an interesting analogy to express this same sentiment, while keeping the video abstract and not just giving away the premise of the song. We like that he was able to avoid cliché and the imagery he was able to capture is a definite work of art on its own.”

Secrets Of The Sky sign to Metal Blade

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at 7:37 AM (PST)

After touring in support of (the Metal Riot highly  approved) To Sail Black Waters over the past two years, Secrets of the Sky are back. They’ve completed tracking their sophomore album at Trident Studios with producer/engineer Juan Urteaga (Testament, Machine Head, Cattle Decapitation). Details and new music will be released this summer.

Secrets of the Sky comments on joining forces with Metal Blade Records: “We are very excited to be joining the Metal Blade Records roster. The Metal Blade legacy, reputation and commitment to heavy music has stood the test of time. The staff we have been working with genuinely “get” what it is that our band is doing and have been tremendously supportive of it thus far. We are also pleased to announce that our second full length will be released in the coming months. The album was again recorded by Juan Urteaga at Trident Studios and is another abstract concept piece. We believe we pushed ourselves in writing it to further develop our sound and we put more focus on creating a collection of songs that flow from beginning to end, while still retaining the cinematic qualities we originally set out with on our debut.

Metal Blade have really hit the mark lately with new music from Primordial, Visigoth, Motor Sister and now this great news, sure to fertilize minds with heavy seeds falling from above.

“Pursuit/Predator,” GODHUNTER‘s latest plodding and antagonizing anthem and the lead track to the band’s upcoming GH/0ST:S split LP with Metal Riot very much approved band SECRETS OF THE SKY, is now playing a month ahead of the album’s release at Invisible Oranges.

The song summons the memory of the Zodiac Killer and churns with violence and the sociology of stress in the zeitgeist. It all ends in an early-Kylesa style tribal melt down with shouts towards the sun, beckoning for reason’s  justice.

Oakland-based sextet, Secrets Of The Sky,will begin their next West Coast trek in just one week, followed by another tour of the coast just several weeks later.

First up, Secrets of The Sky will head out on a headlining voyage next Friday, March 28th, with a week-and-a-half of shows confirmed throughout Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah, Colorado and across their native California through the second week of April.

Secrets Of The Sky‘s upcoming West Coast tour with Godhunter was also announced earlier this week. On June 6th and 7th the two acts will rendezvous at the annual Doom In June Fest in Las Vegas, both set to perform amidst the lineup including Novembers Doom, Christian Mistress, Acid Witch, Ides of Gemini, Demon Lung and more. From there they’ll co-headline a course through Oakland, San Luis Obispo, Glendale, Palm Desert, Tucson and Phoenix. A special collaborative release from both bands is presently being finalized to be sold on this tour, with full details to be announced in the coming days.

The six-member crew has also been busy raking in new endorsements over recent weeks in efforts to continually re-maximize their massive auditory delivery, and recent sponsorships from Spector Basses, Dean Markley Strings, Eventide effect pedals and Pigtronix effect pedals have all been sanctioned.

Italian label, Kolony Records, released To Sail Black Waters worldwide in October, exposing the planet to the band’s expansive, powerhouse style of fusing progressive elements into their crushing doom metal foundation. Three of the band’s six members each contribute with multiple instruments, layering synth/keys, violins and an array of vocal styles atop the crushing rhythm section and massive triple guitar attack, resulting in a dense and stunning forty-one minute opus. Bulldozing over doom, death, black, prog and post-metal genre boundaries, the expansive power of To Sail Black Waters was recorded over an eight month period of recording sessions at Trident Studios with engineer/producer Juan Urteaga (Testament, Machine Head, Cattle Decapitation), and appeared on over a dozen best of 2013 lists including Decibel, MetalSucks, Metal Injection, Metal Insider and more.

These master metal musicians dropped their debut album To Sail Black Waters a week ago via Kolony Records and have just finished ripping across the west coast with In The Silence.

I had the chance to catch up with them over the weekend to talk about the record, touring and how things are going with Kolony Records.

Secrets of the Sky Oakland doom metallers Secrets of the Sky have premiered the lyric video for the song “Sunrise” off of the upcoming album To Sail Black Waters.

Guitarist/keyboardist Clayton Bartholomew had this to say about “Sunrise”:

“We are proud to be releasing the lyric video for the song ‘Sunrise.’ The video was put together by vocalist Garett Gazay, and he used imagery that he felt best conveyed his lyrical content and theme for the song. We think it turned out nicely and summarizes the metaphorical concepts laid out by the lyrics. Enjoy!”

To Sail Black Waters will be released in Europe on October 4 and 5 and in North America on October 8 via Kolony Records.
