IKILLYA‘s star is deservedly rising after considerable effort in the trenches of trashitude. With the band about to drop new album War For An Idea, I caught up with my friend Jason (vocals) and asked him five records that shaped why he has chosen the path of metal devotion. This is the second of our new “Formative Years” column (I did the first one here if you care). Jason’s rad picks (he settled on six) as well as the band’s top notch thrash-core clip for IKILLYA’s “Betray Your Creator” (RIYL Lamb of God, Byzantine, Testament) are below.

Metal reacts to marriage equality

Well, marriage equality is now the law of the land and everyone is waiting to see if that pastor will set himself on fire. In the meantime let’s read some comments from various metal scene humans we love:

Do what I want talk how I want fuck who I want … MARZ. killer lyric, it felt appropriate to post this today. Proud America. Always change and grow, zero tolerance for assholes and bullshit. If you’re offended. Fuck you. Sorry kids – Maria Ferrero  (BreakingBands)

Anyone who gives a fuck about what other people chose to do in their lives in regards to marriage as if it negatively impacts their personal lives is hopefully having a dog shit day today. People deserve the right to get divorced after a few years regardless of who they’re with. I don’t think this is the gateway to people marrying animals or children but if that’s the sort of shit you think then terrific, let’s talk about when Jesus is coming back and how climate change is a Jewish conspiracy to control agriculture while we’re at it. – Neill Jameson (Krieg, LeChantFunebre, Decibel)

I am in Europe right now on tour, but I would like to take the time to publicly express my happiness over some news my wife emailed me from home- the United States Supreme Court ruling that same-sex marriages are now legal in all 50 states. Lately there have been racially motivated killings at home, religious loonies commiting horrific terrorist acts over here in Europe and in the Middle East, there is warfare all over the fucking place, & a ton of people live in poverty the world over- sometimes it’s hard to keep a smile on my face, & I wonder how long our world can keep going before we all just kill each other off. But then are those small moments when love wins, when we actually advance a tiny bit as human beings and realize that “Hey- that person or persons may be different than me, but that doesn’t make them any less than me, and they certainly should have the same rights as me.” I have gay friends- they go to work, they pay their taxes, they pay their mortgages just like everyone else. They are good people, otherwise they wouldn’t be my friends. And sometimes they are assholes just like everyone else too, but I still love them just like I love my straight friends, even when they are being jerks- why shouldn’t they have the same legal rights as me & my wife? Now they do. Whether some people like it or not, love wins this time, & I am stoked. It’s a historic moment, & even in the midst of all the other sadness & craziness it makes me smile. Now we just gotta try & grow up about a few other things… – Randy Blythe (Lamb Of God)

Good Job, ‘merica – Jason Lekberg (Ikillya)

This is a great day for everyone who believes in equality. It doesn’t matter if you want to marry or not. It’s about equal rights for all Americans and building a path to a better nation. A true “United” States of#America ❤️ thanks to all who fought and stood by us to win #equalrights #LOVEWINS

– Otep Shamaya

A heartfelt congratulations to those that have finally won the right to be treated as the human beings they have always been. It has been a long time coming, and the celebration is well deserved!! I lift my glass to you…CHEERS! – Nathan Gray (Boysetsfire, I Am Heresy)

“I’m hoping as a culture we can be better than to stoop to rap feuds. It’s all of us against idiots like the Westboro Baptist Church. Let’s not let the tiny difference between Grind and Thrash get in the way of that.” – Jason Lekberg (Vocals)

IKILLYA are a band really on point with their press kit, drive and pro but genuine and simultaneously self-invested but scene supportive methods. Talented vocalist and industry navigator Jason Lekberg has some serious knowledge he drops in this interview and I’d recommend all metal fans, bands or industry types read and heed his words in regards to goals, artist development and persistence BELOW.

New York City death metallers IKILLYA have been playing metal since 2005 and released their debut album back in 2011.

With kind of a deathcore feel, a brand new album released last month, and a signing to Megaforce Records, IKILLYA are thrashing and bashing their way onto the scene.

You can download IKILLYA’s debut effort Recon to get pummeled to here.
