In the eleventh hour, I bring you my September wrap-up. Holy fucking shit September was one hell of a month. Fortunately, the new music has been good inside and outside of metal. Whether you’ve been trying to avoid Supreme Court-Senate-Nomination-Bullshit, or you’ve been raising all the hell about it you can, whether you’ve been working with survivors in an emotional time of need, or doing your best to survive on your own, whether you’ve been writing to cope, or just playing your show to get through – September was rough as shit.

I’m glad to come back at the end of every month, especially on months that this is the only post I write for Metal Riot, and share with y’all what I thought was really cool throughout the month.

Check out the four albums I enjoy the most this month here.

THE SKULL is the new band featuring vocalist Eric Wagner and bassist Ron Holzner, formerly of metal legends TROUBLE, and the twin guitar tandem of Lothar Keller and Matt Goldsborough (ex-PENTAGRAM). THE SKULL, who released its debut album, For Those Which Are Asleep, to roaring response this past fall, has welcomed new drummer Sean Saley — also formerly of PENTAGRAM — into the fold, replacing former stick man, and founding TROUBLE member, Jeff “Oly” Olson.

I’ve said it a lot recently but I gotta say again that along with Crypt Sermon, Godhunter, Geezer and the latest Electric Wizard release, The Skull prove that doom is stronger than ever, even post-Cathedral. The Skull nailed it on this debut and Wagner is as charismatic as ever vocally.

Now, THE SKULL announces U.S. tour dates in support of For Those Which Are Asleep, including three live performances as part of the 2015 SXSW Music Festival, set for March 17-22, in Austin, Texas. At the shows, THE SKULL will perform both songs from its debut and time-tested favorites from its canon of TROUBLE classics.

The just-announced live dates are as Below.

“Y’know I once wrote a song for you…,” sings doom legend Eric Wagner in “Sick of it All” over a riff so morose no one would want it in a song about them. Doom band Godhunter from Tucson just lost vocalist Charlie and doom legend Wino was just kicked out of Norway for being caught with a lot of meth, which is really worrisome. Thankfully Wagner, the ex-Trouble vocalist who sang on that band’s most classic material, has a new album from his latest project The Skull that will soothe doomed nerves.Said record, For Those Which Are Asleep is streaming at Decibel HERE.

Decibel is streaming this completely bad ass and highly recommended platter of low end, clattering drums, occasional spooky organ parts and vintage classic metal vocals that could raise the dead. Enjoy the whole record but especially check out “The Door”, a mesmeric, questioning anthem of the utmost caliber.
