Redbait‘s pending June 14th release Cages (Pre order HERE) is mandatory listening if you don’t want to miss out on one of the brightest lights of 2019’s underground. The band’s New Age Records debut will make you feel revolution singing in your blood, a powerful second EP from a group with so much promise ahead of them. Listening to their guitars churning like a raging river atop powerful drums backing up intense political vocals, you can’t deny the immediacy or the band’s ability to lay it all on the line. There is nothing worse to me in music than being apathetic about your art or platform and no one would ever accuse Redbait of that.

Today we are thrilled to debut one of my favorite songs from their new release, the thrilling composition “Bred For The Knife”. The production is pitch perfect between remembering energy over pristine while still sounding incredible, well serving the driving and subtly complex song. This one has a few tricks up the sleeve you wouldn’t expect from where it begins, including my favorite bridge of the EP (it kind of sounds like Queensryche meets Bane!). This band knows just where to give more and when to hold back. It’s exceptional. I hope someone whispers in the ears of Rolo Tomassi or Propagandhi to take them on tour immediately.

Says Madeline –

“We wrote “Bred for the Knife” as a commentary on the commodification of animals, specifically in factory farming. The problem of violence against animals isn’t taken seriously and I think that can largely be attributed to the fact that the butchering and processing of animals bodies are discreet and avoided. It isn’t a practice that a lot of people are willing to confront. The lyrics mention animal cruelty, environmental destruction, and worker exploitation as interconnected struggles in this industry. The commodification of animals is a cruel outcome of capitalist society. It’s something that most of us feel very compelled to talk about and inspire conversation through the music we make.”

It really is an important issue. Some pro life dipshit on Twitter was arguing with my girlfriend yesterday and saw no harm in not caring about the environment or animals when she brought up why he ate meat if he was pro-life. He said he doesn’t eat babies, refusing to see her point. Well, bud – you ever have leg of lamb? Congrats. You ate a baby. It’s still a baby. Asshole.

Recorded and mixed by Will Jameson, Cages will be available on 7” vinyl from New Age Records.

SO I’M GONNA PREFACE THIS BY SAYING THAT REDBAIT ARE MY FRIENDS.

I THINK IT IMPORTANT TO SAY THAT BECAUSE I REALLY LIKE THIS TAPE, BUT I ALSO DON’T WANT THIS TO COME OFF LIKE UNFAIRLY BALANCED PROPAGANDA FOR MY FRIENDS BANDS MIXED IN WITH REVIEWS OF OTHER STUFF AS SOME SORT OF SLEIGHT OF HAND KINDA THING.

I’LL START WITH THE THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE ABOUT THIS JUST TO DO IT AND AS USUAL THEY’RE KINDA NIT-PICKY. THERE WERE A FEW VOCAL SECTIONS IN “OUR TOWN” THAT FELT LIKE THEY AWKWARDLY STITCHED TOGETHER PARTS OF THE TRACK. I WISH IT JUST STARTED HARDER. AND THE CLEAN VOCAL SECTION AT THE BEGINNING OF “FOREVER ENDS NOW” JUST REALLY WASN’T MY SPEED. IN GENERAL THE TRACKS ALL SEEM LIKE KIND OF SLANT RHYMES WITH EACH OTHER IN THAT THEY’RE MOSTLY COHESIVE. BUT LIKE ONE TRACK WILL SEEM LIKE IT’S REALLY INFORMED BY BANDS LIKE THE CHARIOT, AND THE NEXT WILL HAVE A HANDFUL OF TERROR RIFFS I DIDN’T EXPECT. I WOULDN’T ACTUALLY HAVE BELIEVED “BRED FOR THE KNIFE” WAS FROM THE SAME RELEASE UNTIL THEY BRING IT BACK AT THE END.

BUT ALL THAT SHIT PALES IN COMPARISON TO THE GOOD SHIT ABOUT THIS.
THE TEN MINUTE TAPE IS THE APEX OF PHYSICAL FORMAT RELEASE.
THIS DOESN’T HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO GET BORING AND I THINK THAT’S HUGE.
THE “FULL LENGTH” AS A MONOLITH GIVES BIRTH TO A LOT OF SAWDUST TRACKS AND THIS SKIPS OVER THAT STEP ENTIRELY IN THE PROCESS. AND THIS JUST FEELS SO LIKE, AT THE UPPER END OF DIY RAW RELEASES.

THIS THING HAS TONS OF RIFFS. THE PRODUCTION IS DELIGHTFULLY GRIMY. THERE’S PLENTY OF TIME FOR KARATE. THE POLITICS BEHIND THESE GUYS ARE FUCKING 10/10. AND I’M REALLY INTO THE ONE DUDE IN THE BAND THAT WEARS A SKI MASK. MORE OF THE BAND SHOULD JUMP ON THAT.

ADDITIONALLY THE ONE VOCALIST’S PHRASING REMINDS ME A LOT OF GRACE PERRY FROM LANDMINE MARATHON AND I MEAN THAT AS REALLY HIGH PRAISE.

ALSO ADDITIONALLY THAT ONE LIKE, PROVOLONE CHEESE DUM DUM CAVEMAN FIGHT RIFF BREAKDOWN IN “CAGES” WAS WONDERFUL. IF YOU’RE NEAR ME WHEN THEY PLAY THIS AT OUR SHOW TOGETHER IN STL YOU’RE GOING OUT ON A STRETCHER.

GOOD TAPE. IT’S NOT THE MONA LISA OR LA PIETA BUT I’M NOT ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE THAT DEMANDS EVERY FUCKING PIECE OF ART BE THE CISTINE CHAPEL CEILING TO BRAND IT PASSABLE. tHIS IS LIKE A DELIGHTFUL SLICE OF PIE YOU CAN TELL YOUR FRIEND WORKED REALLY HARD ON WITHOUT DOING A BUNCH OF GOOFY FOOD NETWORK OVER THE TOP SHIT TO IT. REDBAIT IS FUCKING COOL. WE’RE LUCKY TO HAVE THEM. THIS CONTAINS RIFFS. THEY’RE GOOD PEOPLE. THEY DO THE RIGHT THING AND THAT’S WHAT FUCKING COUNTS. 3.5 OUTTA 5. 4 IF THEY’D DO MORE SKI MASKS.

(Pre Order ‘Cages’ HERE).

“Not caring sucks; I’m here for bands that want to talk about what matters to them, what causes they care about, what they’re listening to, whatever. Everybody’s going through it, let’s go through it together.” – W.

Redbait from Missouri declared their intentions clearly within the first few pummeling moments of “We Refuse” on their recent Red Tape EP. The band are loud, clearly pissed and pack a potent political message in this timeline of complete mass stupidity. We need bands who are actively trying to make the world a better place and spreading awareness more than ever. The punk and metal scenes used to be a place where you could find out about dissent and activism and it was encouraged, believe it or not, for bands to use their podium for something other than selling merch or drinking beer on stage. “Smoke In Your Eyes” is one of the more powerful songs I have heard from any band in the underground in the last few years and I am thrilled this group is jumping into the trenches at full speed.

It was a pleasure to break through the thick fog of gullible fact resistant mental soup we are indoctrinated with on the daily and speak to a band who are decidedly intent on upending the bigotry, greed and sexism of our American disgrace. In short, this band is exactly what myself and likely many others who love punk and metal need right now in order to feel like they aren’t completely losing their minds. Read more HERE.
