Album Review: Hammerfall – (r)Evolution

Posted by Morgan Y Evans - Walking Bombs on Friday, September 5, 2014 at 5:54 AM (PST)

1000x1000

Yes! This is the most Hammerfall have felt like Hammerfall in awhile. Every band has a right to experiment a bit, and maybe it is just having Hector back on the cover art, but (r)Evolution feels like a big winner. White hot solos, soaring near-Manowar lyrics, the occasional plodding riff with gang shouted battle vocals ala “Ex Inferis”…it’s all here. “Winter Is Coming” may be a phrase that is a bit overused these days, but I’m always down for a good Game of Thrones reference. While The Sword beat the trend on Gods of the Earth with “To Take The Black” a few years prior to the show, this Hammerfall song is one of the better sing-a-longs of the year (this side of Iced Earth’s “If I Could See You Now” from mighty Plagues of Babylon). “Origins” and the absolutely memorable, epic single “Bushido” are power flourishing classic heavy metal about following the truth in your heart and honor to victory.”Live Life Loud” is a command and challenge to do just that, an epic case for the health of heavy metal from Joacim and the boys. This record just hit #1 in Sweden. Can we just agree that is fucking awesome? These guitar parts mean business.

From Accept’s Blind Fury to this Hammerfall monster to the aforementioned Iced Earth, there is so much to be said for classic influenced metal in 2014. Everything sounds big, clear and yet not too polished. Album closer “Wildfire” is a total thrill of hyper darting licks and crazy key hits plus some of the most soaring vocals since recent Stratovarius. “Bushido” as a codde might seem a bit distant in origins from Gothenburg, but the sense of devotion and purpose will infect you. Never surrender. There might even be a hidden Stryper shout out, as at one point the lyrics say “I’m a soldier under command.” I’m cool with that.Hector can be proud to hold his hammer high knowing this release is indeed worthy.

Hammerfall Reveal Details on New Album “Infected”

Posted by JDKleinhans on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at 10:22 AM (PST)

On May 20th, Sweden’s epic power metal monster HammerFall is going to release their new album called “Infected” through Nuclear Blast. Laying down the foundation themselves in their own studio in Sweden, the band then traveled to Nashville, TN, to finish it up with acclaimed producer James Michael (Mötley Crüe, Scorpions, Meat Loaf). He also mixed the album, giving it a decisive updated edge without losing anything of the essence of the band. “James helped us create something that was new and exciting while still in the line of our heritage”, Oscar Dronjak, guitar player and founder of the band, explains.

“Never before have we sounded this fresh and up to date without losing the essence of what HammerFall is all about: Pure “Infected” Heavy Metal!”, comments vocalist and frontman Joacim Cans.

“You will experience us like you’ve never done before! We’ve got a lot of fresh influences shining through in the music, but everything you love about HammerFall will still be there“, says Oscar. “This is HammerFall in 2011, the legend has been reborn!”

Hammerfall new album update

Posted by Lucas Riot on Tuesday, November 16, 2010 at 5:15 PM (PST)

HammerFallIn just two weeks, Swedish heavy metallers HammerFall will enter the studio to record the follow up to their gold album “No Sacrifice, No Victory.”  The songwriting is almost finished, and guitarist Oscar Dronjak reveals: “The new material contains a lot of fresh ways to look at the musical ideas, we’re trying to preserve the essence of what HammerFall is while at the same time updating the execution and approach. Definitely heavier and less straight forward than the previous albums, yet remaining true to what we believe heavy metal is all about.”

The quintet also decided to work with a new producer, which is significant since the last four albums have been produced by Charlie Bauerfeind. The choice fell on James Michael, who recently worked with Motley Crue, Scorpions, Meat Loaf, and others. James Michael comments: “We are about to make a fantastic album. The band is firing on all cylinders and I am excited to be part of this project.”

Vocalist Joacim Cans adds another important aspect: “I see James Michael as one of my favorite singers of today and his work with Sixx:AM is simply fantastic. Not only is the album one of the best ever made production-wise, but James also delivers a vocal performance that most singers today are not capable of. James will be the perfect co-producer for us and I really think he will be able to get me up a notch in the vocal department”

The yet untitled record will be released in Europe on May 20th via Nuclear Blast Records.
