Maybe it’s because I’m paying closer attention with each passing year and month of my life, BUT DAMN, another great month that continues a great year of metal! Let me remind you again, I haven’t listened to every single album that has come out this month or any previous month. Who has that kind of time!? I wish I did and I’m determined to make that happen someday.

But alas, I’m rambling once again. Why don’t you all just head on over here to see what I declare to be this month’s top metal albums. Let the harassing criticism begin!

New Music: Borknagar – “Roots”

Posted by jessepac on Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 11:14 AM (PST)

borknagar band photoNorway’s own Borknagar has released their first single off of their soon-to-be-released new album Urd. The track is dubbed “Roots” and will be featured on the March 26th release, via Century Media.

Borknagar’s mastermind Øystein G. Brun checked in to comment about the song:

“In regards to the depth, diversity and magnitude of our new album,Urd, it almost feels painful to slice off just a tiny bit of the bloody roast for the very first official ‘starter’. I would argue that each and every song on the new album stands on solid ground, but as usual with our music, the songs empower each other in the context of a full album.”

Borknagar reveals cover art for new album “Urd”

Posted by metalrocker on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 8:12 PM (PST)

Norwegian black metal band, Borknagar, are now unveiling the cover artwork for their much anticipated new studio album, “Urd,” set to be released on March 26th, 2012 in Europe as well as March 27th, 2012 in North America via Century Media Records.

The album’s artwork was designed by Brazilian artist Marcelo Vasco (www.P2RDESIGN.com), who has not only already worked on the band’s previous Universal release, but also with artists such as Soulfly, Belphegor, Einherjer, Keep of Kalessin.

Borknagar’s mastermind Øystein G. Brun comments on the artwork:

“The cover and design for “Urd” is spot on when it comes to portraying the very core of the band. This time around we wanted an earthly expression through our cover and general design to support and empower the main themes on the album. You can almost smell and feel the texture of the old Norse wooden carvings – still there is a sophisticated and eclectic approach to the expression that entwines perfectly into the music. Marcelo Vasco enhanced our ideas into brilliance, he painted the face of the beast that is about to be unleashed…”

The band previously explained the album title and its overall concept as follows:

“Our previous album was called ‘Universal’ and where should we go after an album title with such a magnitude? Well, we decided to head back home to earth. We really wanted to get back to the core of the band, where it all started – the admiration and pondering about nature and mankind’s place therein. ‘Urd’ is the name of one of the norns that according to northern mythology stands under Yggdrasill and weaves the lifeline of mankind. ‘Urd’ is representing the past, while ‘Verdande’ is representing the present and ‘Skuld’ is representing the future. You might very well say that this is an ancient expression of what we today know as DNA. And I have always been very fascinated by the fact that parts and bits of our DNA actually derive from the very beginning of time. All living creatures are somewhat connected to the very first organic cell. That is some of the story behind the album title…”

The track-listing for the album is as follows:

“Urd” track-listing:

1. Epochalypse

2. Roots

3. The Beauty Of Dead Cities

4. The Earthling

5. The Plains Of Memories

6. Mount Regency

7. Frostrite

8. The Winter Eclipse

9. In A Deeper World

Borknagar Sign Three-Album Deal With Century Media Records

Posted by JDKleinhans on Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at 9:47 AM (PST)

Norway’s progressive black metal pioneers Borknagar has inked a three-album deal with Century Media Records. The band is currently working on material for its new album, tentatively slated for release in early 2012 and is the follow-up to 2010’s “Universal” which was released on Indie Recordings.

Commented Borknagar mainman Øystein G. Brun: “Well, sometimes life takes slightly unexpected yet great turns! Due to internal business affairs, the deal with Indie recordings was mutually terminated by both parties in January 2011. Since then we have been negotiating a possible re-signing with Century Media Records. While you are reading this, Jens F. Ryland and I are at the headquarters of Century Media Records in Dortmund to ink a new deal with our old partners in crime. It feels very good to be back in the fold of the mighty Century family; there is simply no team, no label alike.

Borknagar cancel South American tour

Posted by Lucas Riot on Thursday, August 26, 2010 at 8:54 PM (PST)

BorknagarNorwegian black/folk metal band Borknagar have announced their South American tour is cancelled.  The band has issued the following statement:

Borknagar deeply regret to inform that the previously announced South American tour in September has been cancelled.

Øystein G. Brun comments:
“Sometimes reality bites and it is with a graven heart we have to inform you all that we are forced to pull the plug on the South American tour in September. At this point, too many of the concerts have been canceled by the local promoters (due to local issues beyond our control) and in spite of a desperate attempt to find new venues, we have not been able to get the puzzle together without losing shit loads of money. Parallel to this, our agent for this tour in South America has not provided us with the necessary visas, not even the plane tickets. So there is nothing more we can do at this point and we are forced to pull the plug now, in order to avoid further and major expenses that leads to nothing. On our end, we have done all we can to make this happened. David has come over from US for rehearsals, we have worked out and started rehearsing the set, equipment has been shipped from our endorsement partners, prepared tour-shirt design and so on- we have even gotten the necessary vaccines for us going to South America. We had such high hopes for this tour, it would indeed have been a very special event for us, our fans and friends in South America. I can assure you that we have never before fought this hard to get a tour happening, this time we lost the fight and we are sorry!
