Deep Cuts: CROWBAR

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Sunday, July 23, 2017 at 5:59 PM (PST)

Few bands reward die hard fans over and over again as well as the metallic sludge cavalcade that is Kirk Windstein’s long adventuring CROWBAR. One of the most potent to this very day veteran bands and one of the first more extreme groups I remember being really blown away by many years ago on Headbanger’s, CROWBAR have delivered album after album and monster riff after monster riff.

The band has some of the most revered heavy gems and arrangements in metal to true metal fans and yet also speak in the eternal secret language of the real underground, purveyors of shadow hits that are the “lifesblood for the downtrodden”, so to speak. Like Candlemass, The Obsessed, Orange Goblin or other bands who are not as big as Sabbath but row in equally heady and heavy waters, CROWBAR are hugely inspirational for those who furrow the brow and trudge through this world while carrying a lot of it on their back.

Today we usher CROWBAR into our DEEP CUTS vault, revealing our choices for three songs from the band that we think are lesser appreciated and yet truly bad ass numbers.

Well this is the best tour announcement in a few weeks! Metal sludge lords Crowbar (still in my opinion the heaviest band out there in many ways), have announced North American dates with West Coast gnarly organ bruisers Lord Dying and thrashtastic party force Battlecross.

Revocation get in the van with “Deathless” video

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Friday, November 14, 2014 at 5:13 AM (PST)

skully

Get in the van. Hmmm, remember when Converge covered Black Flag? That was a long time ago. What if Revocation did “The Process Of Weeding Out”? That would be siiiiick. Dudes, please make this a reality.

Oh, yeah…so every time someone gets moony eyed over some newfangled halfway decent tech-death metal band with prog flourishes I’m like ,”Whatever. Revocation.” Like, I still haven’t bothered to listen much to Periphery, haha. You just don’t really need anyone else. Dudes are not only hysterical but their chops are like Mount Olympus qualifying demi-god type stuff. Metal Injection has the new video for title track “Deathless” from their latest corpse kicker of an album. The clip show them raging as only they can and features plenty to gawk at and get whiplash about.

Pointy guitars, tattoos and live footage abounds as well as a Kirk Windstein cameo. Check it out HERE.

Interview: Crowbar – Symmetry In Black and new life

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Thursday, July 24, 2014 at 4:51 AM (PST)

Crowbar_Cover5ca8fb

New Orleans’ stalwarts Crowbar are mainstays of the sludge scene, pioneers of the doomed path and heavy metal kings in the underground. Ex-Down guitarist Kirk Windstein’s first love is an institution of down tuned glory and gruff songs of hellfire and redemption. Kirk keeps trudging one foot in front of the other towards finding the perfect Crowbar riff, a disciple of the school of Sabbath.

Crowbar are one of the ultimate metal bands to me. Symmetry In Black shows Windstein celebrating the 25th year of Crowbar with an album that can proudly match any of his best achievements. Opener “Walk With Knowledge Wisely” seems to continue on the themes of learning from the past that were so prevalent on Sever the Wicked Hand, the previous monster Crowbar release (and also one of their best). “Put an end to what poisons you,” insists the remorseless vocal. And the 3:20 mark has one of the best riffs in the Crowbar universe, which is saying something.

Kirk couldn’t tour as much as Down needed to without risking his health, but the band are doing fine without him as their new material (especially “Steeple”) blessedly revealed. You can have C.O.C. without Pepper Keenan (though I miss his vocals), but there is no Crowbar without Kirk.

Album Review: Crowbar – Symmetry in Black

When word came that Kirk Windstein was exiting sludge megalords Down, I was bummed. Still, I’d rather have a Kirk-less Down (even though he was my favorite member) if it means we still have Crowbar. Underrated for years and finally getting the respect their awesome array of super heavy albums deserves, Crowbar are one of the ultimate metal bands to me. Symmetry In Black shows Windstein celebrating the 25th year of Crowbar with an album that can proudly match any of his best achievements. Opener “Walk With Knowledge Wisely” seems to continue on the themes of learning from the past that were so prevalent on Sever the Wicked Hand, the previous monster Crowbar release. “Put an end to what poisons you,” insists the remorseless vocal. Crowbar debut “Walk With Knowledge Wisely”

Crowbar finally give us new sludgy goodness. “Walk With Knowledge Wisely” continues down the lyrical “get your life on track” path of previous record Sever The Wicked Hand, while showing us what 2014 Crowbar sounds like. New album Symmetry In Black hits streets Stateside on May 27th, 2014.It was co-produced with Duane Simoneaux and mixed by Josh Wilbuer (Gojira, Killer Be Killed, Lamb Of God).

Frontman Kirk Windstein comments:

“‘Walk With Knowledge Wisely’ is the perfect opener for (new album) ‘Symmetry In Black.’ It has every element of the Crowbar sound and is like an anvil to the face. It’s Crowbar at its finest.”

The song can be heard HERE.

If you are like me then you kind of spend most days of your life waiting for news about Crowbar. Like Ice Cube once said…Today was a good day. The riff lords will release an all new full length called “Symmetry in Black” on May 27th, 2014. Their tenth studio LP, it is also the 25th anniversary since the inception of the underground institution. Seriously, if you don’t like Crowbar you are a fucking pussy. As soon as I am done typing this I am gonna go blast “Slave No More”.

Kirk weighs in with this comment:

“We are so proud and excited about what we have accomplished with this record! The focus, determination and attitude in the band is at an all time high. We are 100% ready to get this Juggernaut rolling and never touch the breaks again. CROWBAR will not be stopped! Crowbar is my heart and soul. The music is a part of me that I am extremely proud of. It’s an amazing feeling to be putting all of my energy & focus into something that I created 25 years ago! We are extremely excited to release our 10th full length & to bring the riffs to as many people as possible on tour. See you on the road!”

Band Spotlight: Crowbar

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at 10:42 AM (PST)

New Orleans’ Crowbar are an underground metal institution. There may be much newer bands on the block but Crowbar’s 20 years (and counting) sludge reign always deserves praise. Kirk Windstein’s gruff vocals and abyss dredging riffs are pure, scarred and weathered, yet remain potent. From stunning the world with the low end of “All I Had (I Gave)” back in the day to penning maybe the best doob-friendly riff ever in metal this side of Black Sabbath (“Planets Collide”), Kirk has kept it real. He even manages to also keep Down and Kingdom Of Sorrow original as well without watering down the Crowbar brand. Horns!!! (Pic by R.Weiss)

Prong adds Crowbar and Cradle of Filth bassists to tour

Posted by jessepac on Thursday, May 17, 2012 at 1:50 PM (PST)

Prong is currently in the midst of a short UK and European tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of their landmark Beg To Differ album.  Joining mainman Tommy Victor and drummer Alexei Rodriguez are bass players Matt Brunson of Crowbar and former Cradle of Filth bassist Dave Pybus.

Tommy Victor explained the presence of not one but two well know bassists.

“Since Tony Campos (who has been touring with the band and played on Carved Into Stone) is touring with Soulfly, we’ve had to tour with other bass players. Everyone who has toured with us so far has been fantastic and brought their own personal style to Prong. Phil Zeller from Toxic Holocaust did the Crowbar tour. Jason Rapesi who has played with Stone Sour did a few shows with us before that. We were heading to Europe and the guy we had couldn’t do it in the eleventh hour. Rather than cancel, our friend Matt Brunson from Crowbar stepped in and learned the entire Beg To Differ album in a day and a half! Then we found out that Dave Pybus who has played with Cradle of Filth, was going to be the tech on the tour. As it turned out, Dave is a massive PRONG fan! He learned some of the other songs and has been joining Alexei and I onstage every night. Now we have two great bass players each night! This tour has been a blast!”

Prong will resume tearing up the road in the US this July for a string of shows with the legendary Maryland Rockers Clutch.
