Grand Magus departs with drummer Sebastian Sippola, introduces new drummer

Posted by Fireball13 on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at 8:36 AM (PST)

Swedish heavy metal band Grand Magus have announced their departure with drummer Sebastian “Seb” Sippola who has left the band for personal reasons. The band has replaced Sippola with their new drummer Ludwig “Ludde” Witt (Spiritual Beggars, Firebird, Shining) in the wake of the recording process of the band’s upcoming release The Hunt.

Witt commented on joining the band: “I’m very happy to announce that I, Ludwig Witt, am the new drummer of Grand Magus. I’ve known [guitarist/vocalist] JB for over ten years and I’ve been a fan of Grand Magus since day one, so it’s great to be on board. At the moment I’m learning all the classic Grand Magus songs and I get a huge buzz from playing along to songs like ‘Kingslayer’ and ‘Like The Oar Strikes The Water’ so I can’t wait to get out and play the stuff live together with the new stuff from our new album, The Hunt. See you on the road.”

Sippola, who is leaving the band on good terms, commented: “It took a load off my mind that Ludwig was chosen because he is a friend of mine,” said Sippola. “By the way, honestly and objective: In my opinion Ludwig is the best replacement for mebecause he already knows
JB and Fox [bass] and he exactly knows which demands the drumming at Grand Magus will make on him. They will be a great team and I’m really looking forward to see them live
- though I have no idea, how my reaction will be in this situation.”

Guitarist JB added: “When Sebastian told us that he wanted to concentrate on his family and thus leave the band, it was a tough blow. How to move forward? I knew only one possible drummer who had the combination of old school rock drumming and metal chops like Sebastian and that’s Ludwig Witt who I knew through my tenure in Spiritual Beggars. Ludwig and I have stayed in touch after I left Beggars, and I knew he was busy with other bands, so I couldn’t really hope that he would be available. But like it was destined to happen Ludwig agreed to do the album and join the band. It’s weird, because just like it felt completely natural when Sebastian joined, it feels like Ludwig totally belongs in Magus! Ludwig is an awesome drummer and we are super excited to have him on board. We’ll pound out the metal together starting end of May. Prepare for The Hunt!”

The Hunt will be released June 5th via Nuclear Blast.

Grand Magus reveal cover artwork of upcoming album “The Hunt”

Posted by Fireball13 on Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at 10:56 AM (PST)

Swedish heavy metallers Grand Magus have revealed the cover artwork of their upcoming album The Hunt. The artwork was done by Arik Roper (Cathedral, High On Fire, Sleep). He also did the cover art of Grand Magus album Iron Will.

JB had this to say about the cover artwork:

“Arik Roper is a super-talented artist and we’ve had the pleasure of working with him before when he did the cover art for our album Iron Will. This time around with the overall feel and lyrical themes of our new album THE HUNT, Arik was the perfect choice once again. We basicallly just gave him the title and he created one of the most haunting and suggestive images ever seen. He totally nailed what the album is all about. To say we are pleased is a gigantic understatement! This piece of art will stand the test of time and become classic.”

The album is due out May 25th via Nuclear Blast. Click here to see a bigger picture of the album’s cover artwork.

Cathedral announce Final Show

Posted by Ehrila on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 3:50 AM (PST)

Englands legendary doomsters Cathedral have announced their last show ever. It will take place at The Forum in Kentish Town, London, on Saturday December 3rd 2011, supported by Grand Magus, Comus and Gentleman’s Pistols. The band will also record one last album in 2012, called “The Last Spire.”

Lee Dorrian comments on the news:

“Well, we’ve been doing this for over twenty-one years now and I think it’s a bit of a cop out when bands get back together. I never-say-never, but I honestly can’t see it ever happening. The music means more to us than that and it’s not as though people haven’t had enough chances to see us over the years. I would say it’s very unlikely.”

“It’s just time to move on and leave our recorded legacy to linger. We would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to those special people who have supported Cathedral over the years. It may sound like a cliché but it’s certainly true – we simply wouldn’t have been able to do it without you, thanks!”

Cathedral will be headlining Maryland Deathfest before hitting Brazil, Greece, the Czech Republic, Finland and Germany before they return to England for their last gig.
