Back in 2013 when I wrote about Hydra it was thought to be the last album we would see from metal poetess Otep Shamaya.

We now know that this isn’t the case. OTEP is preparing to release Generation Doom on April 15 via Napalm Records.

Check out my full review of this latest tome of brutal honesty from the ever-candid Shamaya & Co. here.

Sometimes we get to write about fun stuff like how good the new Seremonia album is (fucking amazing) or what is our favorite Megadeth or Gojira era. Other times we have a platform to help share some very important perspectives or stories and it is important to do so. The feminist website #theflounce published a piece I wrote after talking to ex-Enabler bassist Amanda P. Daniels, who just days ago told the world she had been assaulted and abused while in the band and in a relationship with Jeff Lohrber.

Metal scribe Kim Kelly spoke at length to Amanda about her ordeal in full and that link is also embedded in my piece, but the main point of my article is that no one, regardless of gender or that some people make false accusations or “cry wolf”, should have to feel afraid to speak up when they feel or know they have been wronged.

Some words from Otep Shamaya, Liv Jagrell of Sister Sin, Yasmine Kittles of mighty Tearist (aka just about my favorite person in the world right now besides my Mom), indie legend Kelley Deal of The Breeders and R. Ring plus Elan from my duo #bitchwhip offer words of support to show there is precedent to speak up. We also include three songs from The Gits, Karyn Crisis’ old band Crisis and War on Women to remind that there are people who care and will listen.

Metal reacts to marriage equality

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Friday, June 26, 2015 at 12:41 PM (PST)

Heimdall_an_der_Himmelsbrücke

Well, marriage equality is now the law of the land and everyone is waiting to see if that pastor will set himself on fire. In the meantime let’s read some comments from various metal scene humans we love:

Do what I want talk how I want fuck who I want … MARZ. killer lyric, it felt appropriate to post this today. Proud America. Always change and grow, zero tolerance for assholes and bullshit. If you’re offended. Fuck you. Sorry kids – Maria Ferrero  (BreakingBands)

Anyone who gives a fuck about what other people chose to do in their lives in regards to marriage as if it negatively impacts their personal lives is hopefully having a dog shit day today. People deserve the right to get divorced after a few years regardless of who they’re with. I don’t think this is the gateway to people marrying animals or children but if that’s the sort of shit you think then terrific, let’s talk about when Jesus is coming back and how climate change is a Jewish conspiracy to control agriculture while we’re at it. – Neill Jameson (Krieg, LeChantFunebre, Decibel)

I am in Europe right now on tour, but I would like to take the time to publicly express my happiness over some news my wife emailed me from home- the United States Supreme Court ruling that same-sex marriages are now legal in all 50 states. Lately there have been racially motivated killings at home, religious loonies commiting horrific terrorist acts over here in Europe and in the Middle East, there is warfare all over the fucking place, & a ton of people live in poverty the world over- sometimes it’s hard to keep a smile on my face, & I wonder how long our world can keep going before we all just kill each other off. But then are those small moments when love wins, when we actually advance a tiny bit as human beings and realize that “Hey- that person or persons may be different than me, but that doesn’t make them any less than me, and they certainly should have the same rights as me.” I have gay friends- they go to work, they pay their taxes, they pay their mortgages just like everyone else. They are good people, otherwise they wouldn’t be my friends. And sometimes they are assholes just like everyone else too, but I still love them just like I love my straight friends, even when they are being jerks- why shouldn’t they have the same legal rights as me & my wife? Now they do. Whether some people like it or not, love wins this time, & I am stoked. It’s a historic moment, & even in the midst of all the other sadness & craziness it makes me smile. Now we just gotta try & grow up about a few other things… – Randy Blythe (Lamb Of God)

Good Job, ‘merica – Jason Lekberg (Ikillya)

This is a great day for everyone who believes in equality. It doesn’t matter if you want to marry or not. It’s about equal rights for all Americans and building a path to a better nation. A true “United” States of#America ❤️ thanks to all who fought and stood by us to win #equalrights #LOVEWINS

– Otep Shamaya

A heartfelt congratulations to those that have finally won the right to be treated as the human beings they have always been. It has been a long time coming, and the celebration is well deserved!! I lift my glass to you…CHEERS! – Nathan Gray (Boysetsfire, I Am Heresy)

MetalSucks usually treats Otep like shit and while I love that site generally it is one of the things that annoys me the most about it, cuz Otep rules. Show me that many other metal artists who are as outspoken and who have inspired more people to accept their bodies, sexuality or to get socially active protesting war and to listen to heavier music. There aren’t that many.

And seriously, how could you listen to “Warhead” and not think it was heavy as fuck?

I took Otep’s side in the scandal about The Civil Unrest tour and now in her Metalsucks interview Otep Shamaya puts the bullets into everyone else’s version of events pretty thoroughly. Good for you, Ms. Shamaya.

TRIBE for life, yo.

Check out OTEP’s rebuttal HERE.

Ill Nino responds to Civil Unrest Tour vs Otep Controversy

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at 10:22 AM (PST)

maxresdefault

Alright y’all. Getting a late start here today. I was babysitting so a photog/ex could go shoot a Swans show for me and freakin’ wow…kids tire you out more than a metal show. In case you aren’t up to speed the internet exploded over Otep allegations against the singer of a low budget Slipknot rip off Terror Universal , He is said to have violently grabbed her crotch in a huge violation of personal space while drunk. Read the full exchange of statements from Otep, the wife of Terror Universal’s singer and the tour promoters HERE.

Long story short is Otep says she was told ahead of time Terror Universal weren’t going to be on the tour. The Civil Unrest tour organizers say she breached contract and is drumming up this mess to get more money, pretty much as bold a claim as saying someone assaulted you if it isn’t true.

Otep Shamaya responded online with:
If it didn’t happen why did security remove him from the bldg? Why were they kicked off my tour the night it happened?
I make a damn fine living in this band. Also my work as a Voice Over Actor (the HOBBIT) & an author. I don’t need to extort anyone for $ ha

Good response and succinct.

Even if dude was drunk and didn’t intend or mean what Otep said occurred, it doesn’t mean no harm was done. But contracts aside-I know honestly people who say Otep can be a hard ass. HOWEVER, In the numerous times I’ve interviewed her she’s been  extremely thoughtful, outspoken and great. I cannot believe that person would leverage a tour contract dispute by sensationalizing the issue of invasive physical activity against women , especially when combating it is the backbone of many of Oteps songs!!

Not to mention , it’s a competitive fucking  industry and you have to be hard sometimes especially in metal where chicks get pushed around if they don’t want to be “the hottest chick in metal” stereotype and push their art foremost over their tits (not that I am a prude about sex. It’s their choice). But  if the Terror Universal band was not supposed to be on the same tour as Otep but added on later how is THAT not a breach in the civil unrest tours part? Some people are saying the smaller band would be booted off if a bigger one issues such demands but not necessarily and CERTAINLY not if Otep was really offended. She stands on principle.

Ill Nino  have since issued this statement in the aftermath of all this ugliness. Looks like Kittie is replacing the departing feuding bands. I have no gripe with the great bands still on the bill, especially 36 Crazyfists who put out my fave record of 2015 so far. But I will say I think the response of the tour officials shows major lack of objectivity and so I will henceforth write about these bands only once they are out on whatever tours they follow Civil Unrest up with. It is distasteful. Maybe I’m biased for various reasons but something feels off here.

ILL NINO does not condone any forced act of violence or sexual nature towards any human beings, nor will we tolerate violations of one’s personal space. This also goes for cyber-bullying, or making demeaning comments towards ANYONE on social media. We strongly support equality for all.

We would like to draw closure by stating that the CIVIL UNREST TOUR will continue without participation from either OTEP or TERROR UNIVERSAL. We’re looking forward to hitting the road, reuniting with our fans and friends, and also sharing the stage with our tour brothers, and sisters, KITTIE & 36 CRAZYFISTS. Stay tuned, more bands to be added!!”

In addition, it is good that Terror Universal have at least posted the following on their Facebook:

EVERYONE ON THIS PAGE, PLEASE NO MORE NEGATIVE COMMENTS AGAINST OTEP, OR ANYONE ELSE. THE NAME CALLING, AND UGLY REMARKS HAVE GONE ON LONG ENOUGH. THANKS.

Seriously, there is so much vile trolling out there from fans on all sides. YOLO, y’all. Try and be better people and not resort to verbal violence. Anyway, I gotta get back to this Stoneburner record, some good herb and maybe some American Horror Story: Coven re-runs to lift my spirits and make me feel clean again. Where is the unity?

Metal Will Turn You Gay: Response to Senses Fail/Attila beef

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Thursday, October 30, 2014 at 7:47 AM (PST)

ac2db9ea-0693-45af-bc51-b9e6bd790201

Let’s get one thing straight (no pun intended)…Freddie Mercury is the greatest frontman ever besides maybe, I dunno, GG Allin and H.R., haha. Do you guys remember when Marilyn Manson allegedly had a rib removed so he could give himself head? Yeah, that was a good one. Seriously, most people would kill to have even an iota of the power Freddie Mercury let loose on a regular basis, complete command of audience and material…a true rock God. Was it because he was homosexual? Haha, maybe…but that’s silly. The truth is that it was raw talent. Even his song from the first Highlander movie is like the most epic fuckin’ shit I ever heard in my life and puts most metalcore bands to shame. And remember the George Michael “Freedom” video where every babe in the world was in it?

I haven’t wanted to comment on the recent Attila/Senses Fail feud, because I just got a new Sonata Arctica promo of Ecliptica – Revisited (their early record recut by the current line-up) and it is pretty awesome and attention grabbing. Still, the cavalier use of the word “faggot” by Fronz of Attila and the beef it caused with respected emo/hard rock vets Senses Fail should be discussed, though Metal Injection’s Shayne Mathis did an awesome job in this feature.

Can we all agree that no one likes to be picked on?

Haters wanna hate on Otep Shamaya but I think she rules and still always brings it live. Gotta love an artist who keeps fighting progressive battles. Otep caught some heat recently for daring to tweet that perhaps her lack of inclusion on Mayhem Fest‘s 2014 Victory Stage was due to corporate sponsorship homophobia, a speculation she frankly caught too much flak for. Fact is, websites did jump on it and blow it out of proportion. Speculation is not full accusation. It is certainly reasonable that Shamaya hypothesized and then discussed the situation with people from Mayhem. It is easy to be snarky about shit when you haven’t faced discrimination for your sexuality. Does it make people paranoid sometimes? Maybe, but that isn’t reason to crucify them on metal sites. In my book, Otep has huge “balls” and kudos to her for staying outspoken.

Anyway, real fans can catch Ms. Otep live on the Civil Unrest tour with Dope, Smile Empty Soul and more.

Best and Worst of 2013: A year in review and a ‘Best Albums Of’ list

Posted by longhairedpoet on Wednesday, December 25, 2013 at 2:05 PM (PST)

What a year it’s been for the music world, and specifically for the heavy metal world. From the drop of 13 from an Ozzy-led Black Sabbath, to the death of Jeff Hanneman (may he rest in peace) to the arrests and trials of Randy Blythe and Tim Lambesis, it’s been an exciting first year for me here at Metal Riot as I’ve had the chance to interview members of A Pale Horse Named Death, White Wizzard, Secrets of the Sky, Impending Doom and In The Company of Serpents and review such powerful albums as Death Will Reign, To Sail Black Waters, The Hundredth Name, Skull, ReEvolution and Hydra and I could not think of a better way to close out the year than to let you all know what albums I thought were the best of 2013!

Check out my top ten albums of 2013 as well as my year-in-review here.

Last winter I thought maybe I would never have the opportunity to see OTEP in concert when she announced that Hydra would be her last album.

But then came along the “With A Vengence Tour” and on October 24, I had the great fortune of seeing not only OTEP, but the interesting band of misfits she’d been raging across the country with – and OTEP and tribe both came out in full force to make this a night to remember.

Check out how the night went here.

Interview: OTEP – Fuck You, Forever

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at 1:12 PM (PST)

OTEP_007_DjosefinMaurer

Let’s follow up our recent Metal Riot Otep album review with a one/two punch interview with the outspoken lady herself. As many fans know, Otep has stated that the recent HYDRA (Victory Records) will be her last album of metallic fusion rock catharsis. After numerous full lengths, building a massive online following and years of touring (including remaining one of the most outspoken hard rock voices during the plastic, exploited patriotism of the Bush years), Otep Shamaya is moving on to do other things. Is this record a fitting send off? You bet.

This is the 4th time I have interviewed Otep and each time I have been really pleased with the depth of her answers and willingness to discuss things many “keepin’ it real” bands shy away from. Check this out and celebrate Otep’s career with Metal Riot.

We discussed the finality of HYDRA, Gun Control, amnesia in society, her graphic novel, LGBT, metal genre snobs and keyboard cowboys plus lots of other fun stuff. I wish every interview was as much fun as the times I’ve gotten to talk to Otep. Horns up and speak out.
