Shadow Woods is back from the brink! After the original Maryland based property was sold, things looked bleak. Somehow the organizers pulled things back together and this looks to be the best year yet!

Shadow Woods is the Mid-Atlantic’s only open-air camping heavy metal gathering and runs from Thursday, September 20th through Saturday, September 22th in Purcellville, VA at Harpers Ferry Adventure Center (HFAC).

For the fourth year, the festival will host over 40 of the underground’s leading bands, representing many genres and subgenres of heavy metal, folk, rock, experimental, and noise. “It was pretty clear from the positive feedback I received after the 2017 fest that festival goers did not want to see Shadow Woods end, even though our property in Maryland had been sold,” said Mary Spiro, fest founder. So without a venue or a confirmed lineup, I started quietly raising the funds to do a new fest via the contributions of past attendees. In January 2018, I was able to find an fantastic site to host the fest that was even better than what we had before. The lineup came together very quickly and I am extremely proud and excited to present these past favorites and new discoveries.”

Imperial Trumphant, Cloak, Rozamov, Tombs, Xasthur, Destroyer Of Light, Hubris, Heavy Temple, Uada, Forest Of Legend and many more will play the festival over three days in September of 2018!

Interview: Tombs – Savage Gold Ascendant

The gold idea comes from alchemy; gold is a higher level of being. Most of the record deals with death and transformation, changing state, moving from a lower state to a higher state. – Mike Hill

While the entertainment industry worries about how to cash in on holograms of Michael Jackson, some people in rock are steadfast and focused on creating art with merit. Tombs represent an economy of thought, motion and practice, a sort of way of being. The band’s new album Savage Gold (Relapse), is the latest in a string of truly moving works of extreme sonic art. As harsh at times as being caught in a storm and as sentimental as a music box at others, the band are evocative and beyond easy categorization.
