First, let me start by saying props to Toilet Ov Hell for calling Sweden’s Shining what they have become…‘edge lords’. I’ll give credit there for the inspiration for the title of this article, because it made me laugh. Niklas Kvarforth makes some bad ass music but has always kind of been a black metal poor man’s GG Allin. It’s been done before and that route of “shock” rock antics is, well…kinda tacky and frankly, basic. Dude’s brilliant music is completely cheapened by this shit, like getting clicks by doing obnoxious shit and then saying people are “pussies” if they roll their eyes or that they are like, ‘bound to the norms of a society you despise’ or some black metal shite. Cool story, bro. Grow the fuck up. At least Kvarforth also supports some pretty anti-social rap whereas a lot of black metal people would just be bigots and call the rappers savages while then using basically the same kind of language against women you find in the most sexist rap, for example.

Many years ago in my early twenties I was kicked out of CBGB once very trashed for throwing chairs at the audience and fighting the sound guy on stage after drinking most of a bottle of I don’t even remember what. Some of this was documented in an article in the porn/music mag Screw Magazine, which was amazing…but I was still a jerk. And I am told I was spitting in the face of Josh Eppard, my drummer at the time, for having worked once for a local police benevolent association. Ridiculous shit. Then we got beer bottles thrown at us meant for me that whizzed instead by Josh’s head barely missing him. I can’t blame dude for having quit the band after that. I think I thought I had to be a maniac to compete with the punk legacy of the place but in hindsight, I was a total asshole and could have hurt someone. WTF is so cool about alienating people who might actually support your cause?

I’ve been really blessed this year, one of the most painful and shitty of my life from deaths to death threats, to do some of the most inspiring interviews of my career over the last few months, from Tearist to a recent chat with Killing Joke to this piece with Norway’s Shining. Jørgen Munkeby has taken the Blackjazz concept to new heights, literally. The fucking band of maniacs have made one of their best records yet with the brazenly fierce International Blackjazz Society but also recently shot a concert on Trolltunga, defying death and rocking out with a performance both historic and literally far above the limits most band are willing to go to.

It was very inspiring and enjoyable to speak with Munkeby on his new record, the evolution of jazz and metal’s uneasy alliance, Trolltunga, keeping warm huddling around burning churches, playing with Ihsahn and Melissa Auf der Mar and why you can’t give up if you have a shitty soundguy.

DEPtourdatesThis was an interesting line up. New York City’s Webster Hall hosted “blackjazz” Norwegians Shining, Retox and Trash Talk both representing visceral Cali punk and hardcore, and The Dillinger Escape Plan to finish the night’s uncompromising variety. I also found all the singers to be exuding some serious libido. Each vocalist crooned to swoon like it was his last night to bang.  Not many shows have had such pretty dudes fronting the bands on stage either. Great night to be a girl in the crowd. I hope someone got some D, it was definitely out there.

With Dillinger headlining, you could easily guess the stage was set to absolutely demolish the fourth wall, as many of the bands took advantage of the speakers stacked for stage dives into the crowd and extra long cables for the singers to wander into the pit for a stroll.

New Video: Shining – “Förtvivlan, Min Arvedel”

Posted by Ehrila on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at 6:51 AM (PST)

Sweden’s extreme metallers Shining has released their first music video in the band’s 15 year history. The video is for the track “Förtvivlan, Min Arvedel,” taken from the new album “VII / Född Förlorare,” released May 11th on Spinefarm Records.

The band commented on the video:

“We know we are going to get heavily criticized for some of the scenes” commented front man and founder Niklas Kvarforth, “but it’s nothing more than you will see as soon as you switch on a television or watch a move, or walk down a city street come to that. But we’re Shining and it’s always open season on Shining when it comes to people who have neither understood, nor taken the time to try and understand, where the band is coming from.”
