High On Fire illuminate “The Sunless Years” (new single)

The Lord’s Prayer is less than fifty words long, and six of those words

are devoted to asking God not to lead us into temptation. The one-sided contemplative

leaves undone many things that he ought to do; but to make up for it, he refrains

from doing a host of things he ought not to do. The sum of evil, Pascal remarked, would

be much diminished if men could only learn to sit quietly in their rooms.

The contemplative whose perception has been cleansed does not have to stay in his room.

– Huxley, The Doors Of Perception

West coast heavy weights High On Fire are one of the bands along with Neurosis, Mastodon, Baroness and Today Is The Day who are most responsible for shifting the trends in the underground from death or nu metal to the brainier psych and sludged infused styles that are arguably the most consistently awesome sounds in metal today. New song “The Sunless Years” from forthcoming banger Luminiferous is everything you’ve ever loved about High On Fire in one invincible wall of guitar fuckery, aimed right at your third eye and out through the back of your exploding skull.

Check it out HERE at Entertainment Weekly (yes, you read that right) HERE. Kudos or “tekeli li” to Pike and the boyz.

High On Fire are back with “The Black Plot”, a song that couldn’t sound more HoF-esque if it gargled Yeti sweat and thumbtacks. As powerful as their endless live onslaught, the new battering ram on fire tune can be heard HERE via Rolling Stone. The band’s new Kurt Ballou (Converge, ETID,Trap Them)  tracked Luminiferous will be out in early June and it is time to pump up this jam! I don’t know who that guy in the shirt pretending to be Matt Pike is in the photo above, but nonetheless we are stoked!

High On Fire to release “Luminiferous” June 23

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at 7:14 AM (PST)

Matt Pike’s revered sludge n’ roll juggernaut High On Fire will release Luminiferous, their 7th(!!) album, on June 23rd via eOne music. Recorded at Salem, Massachusetts’ GodCity Studios with producer Kurt Ballou, the record is the follow-up to the group’s 2012 release, De Vermis Mysteriis, an album hailed as “not for the faint of heart ” by The New Yorker and “a fantastically constructed bloodbath” by Entertainment Weekly.

Feast your eyes on that cover art! Swamp Thing/The Green Man/Jolly Green Giant is stoked, as are we!

“We’re doing our part to expose The Elite and the fingers they have in religion, media, governments and financial world downfall and their relationship to all of our extraterrestrial connections in the race to control this world,” comments vocalist / guitarist Matt Pike. “Wake up, it’s happening. All while we stare at a socially engineered lie we think of as normalcy. Unless we wake from the dream, there will come true doom.”

High On Fire, Mountain Of Wizard and Geezer decimate The Chance

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Sunday, February 1, 2015 at 11:17 AM (PST)

My doom boys Geezer opened for High On Fire, the most fiery band in hard rock/metal who will stone you like Sisyphus just got punished for chronic lies told. I got to the show at the venerable Poughkeepsie, NY venue, which has housed legendary performances from the likes of The Rollins Band to Trapt to Incubus to Blindside to Fear Factory (to name just a few of countless shows), a bit late. Geezer’s set was missed alas but they rule and I’ve heard crushed through the large stage P.A., while New Orlean’s Mountain Of Wizard caused a boogie heavy rock thrill to enrapture the crowd. High On Fire eventually shook the hall with sonic fury, a gravel throated  Matt Pike not wearing a shirt even though the freezing fucking cold winter chill still was creeping in through the opening doors. Cometh down Hessian, in-fucking-deed. Droppin the frost hammer like street rhyme knowledge for these punks in need of a riff education.

High On Fire talks new album, Winter Tour dates announced

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Thursday, December 11, 2014 at 8:09 PM (PST)

High On Fire, the sludge and roll juggernaut of a power trio led by guitar overlord Matt Pike, have announced Winter Tour dates. Any chance to see them with any line-up they have ever had is not one to be missed lightly. Every time I have seen HoF hit the stage they have completely leveled already high expectations. I honestly, and I know this is sacrilege to many, often prefer them to Sleep. Throwing all that doom, harder than hard rock metal and menace into the more Motorhead rumble of this group ( “Devilution”, for example ) but still having epic bong ripper solos to die for makes it for me, despite how perfect Jerusalem/Dopesmoker is in any edit.  Yet thankfully, I’m allowed to like both.

“Everyone is asking what the new High on Fire music sounds like,” says drummer Des Kensel. “Chew on some mescaline and listen to side B of Sabbath’s “Master of Reality” backwards at 78 RPM and it might give you an idea.”

Anyway, check out the dates below.

High On Fire begin work on new opus

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at 10:21 AM (PST)
California rock giants High On Fire have begin work on their new, as-yet-untitled studio album. The globally-celebrated group — guitarist/vocalist Matt Pike, drummer Des Kensel and bassist Jeff Matz — have convened for strategic writing sessions in both New Orleans, LA and Oakland, CA, with early reports indicating the band’s new material to be both “epic” and “sonically huge”. A winter 2015 tentative release date via eOne is expected for the new LP, the follow-up to 2012’s De Vermis Mysteriis, which has been hailed as “not for the faint of heart ” by The New Yorker and “a fantastically constructed bloodbath” by Entertainment Weekly.”Des, Jeff and I are really getting creative and writing a hell of a new record,” states Pike. “It’s a crazy project and I can’t really explain what it’s all about just yet, but we’ve been writing a lot of crazy intense material that will up the ante, and bring things to another level.”

“Everyone is asking what the new High on Fire music sounds like,” adds Kensel. “Chew on some mescaline and listen to side B of Sabbath’s “Master of Reality” backwards at 78 RPM and it might give you an idea.”

High On Fire frontman/guitarist Matt Pike has Les Paul stolen

Posted by SeanB on Thursday, August 30, 2012 at 6:08 PM (PST)

In an act of rampant douchebaggery, stoner/doom metal greats High On Fire‘s frontman Matt Pike has had one of his guitars stolen from the band’s studio in California.  Matt just got out of rehab for alcohol and released a kick ass new video too.  What a ballbust.

The band has issued the following statement regarding the theft:

“Matt Pike’s Les Paul guitar has gone missing from a Santa Rosa studio. The color is Tobacco Sunburst and has Matt Pike signature pickups and the case has PIKE written on it in large white letters. The serial number is 92462499. Please be on the lookout for this guitar. If you happen to be in a pawn shop in the bay area or see something. This guitar means everything to Matt. If you have any information on the guitar, please contact”

Music Video: High On Fire – “Fertile Green”

Posted by SeanB on Monday, August 20, 2012 at 7:12 AM (PST)

So the one and only Matt Pike from stoner/doom metal band High On Fire is out of rehab for alcohol addiction and the band is back with a brand new video for the song “Fertile Green.”  It’s taken off their latest E1 Entertainment release De Vermis Mysterious and these guys sure as shit live up to the stoner metal branding that they receive.

You can click right here to see for yourself.

The story follows “Balteazeen, the Christ Twin, who sacrificed himself to give Jesus life. Forever hunted, he roams the slaughterhouse of Time, searching for answers to the riddle of his own existence…”  The video pretty much rules and it’s nice to know that Matt Pike back doing his thing.  Maybe this means they’ll actually be able to go on tour now.  Fingers crossed and we’ll keep you updated.

Album Review: High on Fire – “De Vermis Mysteriis”

Posted by JDKleinhans on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at 12:05 AM (PST)

Doom metal. Stoner metal. Sludge metal. Define it with a label if you must  but in the end there are only a handful of bands do what High on Fire does, much less on a scale and level in which they do it. In 2003 I was introduced to a little album called Dopesmoker by a band known only as Sleep. Dopesmoker consists of a single track that clocks in at 63:31 and it completely blew my mind. Thus, was I introduced to High on Fire and my obsession with this crushing band began.

De Vermis Mysteriis is HoF’s sixth studio album and with its increased production reminds everyone how truly brutal and heavy HoF is and doom metal can be. Translated as “The Mysteries of the Worm”, De Vermis Mysteriis is a concept album that centers on H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulu mythos and follows the life and times of the brother of Jesus as he travels forward and then backwards through time.

Concept albums can be a tricky thing. To find out how well HoF executes this latest addition to the world of concept albums, head on over here.
