Interview: Ihsahn – Compatible Divergence

Some people Darby Crash or Syd Barrett their way to enlightenment. Others seek perfection of form or religion until some part of them slowly erodes (in cases when it fails). Whether you are a Tim Lambesis or a Blake Judd or a Mic Todd, these people all made meaningful art that affected people, as much as people debate the morality of some of their actions. Sometimes, as ugly as things can be, it is just part of the equation of life. We do have free will and choice to embrace higher roads, but karma or preconditioned hurdles in the psyche or environment can create major speed bumps (sometimes made of actual speed!).

Ihsahn of Emperor fame is still most associated with that classic Black Metal juggernaut, including their social infamy. Nowadays the founding 2nd-ish wave black metal father turned prog giant has evolved through non beholden to Orthodox Satanism and anti-morality to something inclusive of all that but much more vast and still very empowered. Ihsahn’s new solo-opus Das Seelenbrechen is a trip down the rabbit hole. This is not just restless reinvention for the sake of throwing out the past but rather a revealing of more layers and a sharpening of corners. “M” is delicate prog turned Floyd blues freak out. Space and ritual bells come at you on some tracks. Invisible siamese twins and stunning ambient poetry flitter up against stuff so harsh (i.e.: “Tacit 2” is an edifice crumbling into endless shadows) it competes with the most intense shit of OvO , Rotting Christ, Oslo’s Årabrot or Today Is The Day’s Sadness Will Prevail era. Think drums as falling beams, courtesy of Leprous drummer Tobias Ornes Anderson.

Das Seelenbrechen does not babysit you, like a purgatory of growth. This is the Orobouros throwing aside fear as it eats it’s tail. Haunting. Inspiring. Controlled/Chaotic.

‘I don’t know what I fear the most. What I am or what I’m not”. – Ihsahn from “PULSE”

New Music: Leprous – “Chronic”

Posted by SeanB on Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at 3:23 PM (PST)

leprousNorwegian progressive metallers Leprous have released the first single from their upcoming album Coal.  The album is due for release May 28th in North America and May 20 in Europe via InsideOut Music and is the band’s fifth full length album.  The record was produced by Heidi Solberg Tveitan & Vegard Tveitan of Mnemosyne, and Jens Bogren & Tony Lindgren mixed and mastered the album at Fascination Street Studios (Opeth, Symphony X, Kreator).

You can find the first single called “Chronic” streaming at HeavyBlogIsHeavy.com by clicking right here.

Leprous singer/synth-player Einar Solberg had this to say about the song:

“We’re delighted to finally be able to give you the first taste of our upcoming album ‘Coal’! ‘Coal’ is a melancholic, soulful and very dynamic album. Where ‘Bilateral’ was playful and ‘in-your face’, ‘Coal’ is subtle and floating. ‘Chronic’ however, is of the more dynamic songs of the album. With a heavy basis, the song pinches a nerve LEPROUS has never before explored.”

Leprous recording new album, releases first studio video

Posted by Fireball13 on Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at 11:08 AM (PST)

Norwegian progressive metallers Leprous have started recording sessions for their upcoming, currently untitled studio album. The band plans to release their upcoming album before the summer 2013 via InsideOut Music.

Singer/synth-player Einar Solberg reported:

“As many of you already know, we’ve started recording our new album. The drums are finished, and we’re now focusing on the guitars. Also this time we’re using Vegard ‘Ihsahn’ Tveitan and Heidi ‘StarOfAsh’ S. Tveitan as our producers / technicians. The drums were recorded in the really cool and old school Juke Joint Studio and we’re really satisfied with the result.

As far as the new music, we can only remind you that LEPROUS will never be the kind of band to re-create the mood from previous works, and it’s very important for us that each album has its own strong character. We have great belief in this album and we promise something fresh, challenging and soulful! This album will also be mixed and mastered by Mr. Jens Bogren @ Fascination Street Studios.”

The band has posted a special studio video from the drum recording sessions which you can check out right here.

Leprous streaming new song “Restless,” releasing new album

Posted by Fireball13 on Thursday, July 14, 2011 at 4:19 PM (PST)

Norwegian progressive metallers Leprous are streaming their song “Restless” off their upcoming album “Bilateral.” You can check it out right here but you have to “like” it to listen.

The band’s vocalist/keyboardist Einar Solberg had this to say about the new track:

“Restless represent “Bilateral” in many ways. It’s complex, but at the same time catchy and plain. Even though it’s one of the shortest songs on the album, I feel it’s flavored with all the things that make LEPROUS special. It has the catchy chorus, it has the groove, it has prog’ish feel and last but not least it has the heaviness”

“Bilateral” is the band’s third album and their InsideOutMusic debut. It is set to be released on August 22nd in Europe and August 23rd in North America. Click here to see a bigger picture of the cover artwork.
