“We strive to create. It is an essential part of who we are as individuals. We will only stop when we are dead!” – Matt

Cryptopsy vocalist Matt McGachy  was awesome and checked in to tell us about the Back To The US 2015 Tour the death metal veteran tyrants are engaging in (Tickets HERE! Get them). Cryptopsy have been curdling blood since before you popped pubes, so give them respect! Also, check their new crowd funding effort and chip in, metalheads!

I’ll tell you what…I just rode 6 hours on a bus today. Mother’s Day I went to babysit my sister’s kids out of state as a favor. It was good to se family but the long ride back to Upstate, NY was ringing my ears. People in early summer in NYC are either amazing to look at, day walker hipster scum or Romero zombie/walkers who stink of piss and mental illness. I mean, it depends on where you are. I love NYC to death, even now. Still, I had forgotten to take my meds for 3 days and swicthed seats so a nice Asian couple could sit together and my last hour home this “large framed” woman in a sleeveless shirt was sweating and fainting on me half asleep, really edging me out. Seeing all this beautiful former countryside roll by as I came back through Rhode Island and Mass and then crawled past NJ adult gift stores and empty lots, it bummed me out. I try to be compassionate and believe in the best in humanity but sometimes you see the swarming, hungry masses just now learning to not have GMOs in their Chipotle and you wanna barf and scream “why, God?! Why are we such slaves to wolfish, murderous impulse.” Then you want to listen to metal and scream and cry.

Fucking Cryptopsy, whichever album (and I do mean ALL of them – seriously, how could you think “The Headsmen” wasn’t fucking insane?!!) have more guts, dedication and tenacity than half the citizens of the United States in guitarist Chris Donaldson ‘s little picking finger alone. These dudes have slaved over countless riffs, logged many miles and held on to the torch of extreme and deadly music long before social media troll-core blog page comment nazis started wearing big ass ear gauges.

Victory Records artists like Emmure, Sister Sin, our beloved Blackguard and even God Forbid want you to have a safe and Merry Christmas or whatever else you are celebrating, dammit. This isn’t the most metal thing in the world, perhaps, but it might make you feel warm and cozy inside and want to go drink some eggnog and mosh.

Victory had a great 2012 and 2013 looks just as exciting for the label with upcoming releases from Otep, Fall City Fall and Continents in the early new year. Pre order packages are available HERE in the Victory Webstore.

MR Exclusive Interview: Paul Ablaze of Blackguard

Posted by JDKleinhans on Friday, April 27, 2012 at 10:37 AM (PST)

Dick feet! That pretty sums up how this interview went. Actually, it was more of an hour long conversation of randomness that often occurs when you get several people such as this sitting on some comfy ass futons waiting for the start of a metal show. It was a helluva a good time and a helluva show. Check out the highly edited interview here.

Stage commander/vocalist Paul Zinay of Victory Metal’s proud Canadian sons (and sister) Blackguard took the time to tell us his thoughts about touring the world, playing with Kittie, the next Blackguard record, Emilie Autumn and more.

See what he had to say in this exclusive interview HERE.

You can also check out Paul’s video interview with our very own MetalRiotJD over this way.

The evening started with an awkward handshake. It ended with a man hug. Potential friendships had begun to be forged that mid-spring night. I suppose I should start at the beginning.

Upon arriving at the historic Rave / Eagles Club just west of downtown Milwaukee, I made a quick phone call to a gentleman who some call “Ablaze”. Between the wrought iron bars surrounding a school ground, I watched as the frontman for Blackguard raised his hand up in the air and spun around in a circle. This was going to be an interesting night indeed.

Instead of having the usual casual interview that I typically strive for – as I am very sensitive to the fact that I may be interrupting some pre-show ritual – I ended up sitting around on a futon while having a very laid back and oftentimes “inappropriate” 90 minute conversation with various members of not only Blackguard but Bonded By Blood and Kittie as well. If the show itself was going to be anything like this pre-show “interview” (stay tuned), then it was going to be a very memorable night indeed.

To see if the show itself was as memorable, head on over here.

Interview: OTEP-Raised Fist Atavist

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at 3:50 PM (PST)

Hard rock/metal fusion poet OTEP recently completed the ATAVIST TOUR with fellow hard-chargers Destrophy, Blackguard, One-Eyed Doll and Sister Sin, a package that was one of the finest and loudest overall tours of the summer. The variety of great bands and energy of the shows was killer and were an inspired, great way to celebrate the release of one of Otep Shamaya’s best releases, the very realized in vision and expansive ATAVIST (Victory Records).

Even in an age when more and more people can’t be bothered to feel there are STILL bands that fight to keep heavy music alive and well, sharing a primal sensibility.

Click HERE to read an interview with the always outspoken Otep about ATAVIST as well as quotes from members of Blackguard and Sister Sin on what made the tour so special.

This interview also includes many exclusive live tour pics of ALL THE BANDS!

Interview: Blackguard-Defenders Of The North

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at 10:46 PM (PST)

Paul “Ablaze” Zinay, lead vocalist of Blackguard, wants to make something very clear. “Ok, first of all we’re not Pagans and we’re not Pirates, and the next writer or reviewer to call us either of those things I’m going to drop kick off a building.” That may be the case, but this writer did ingest a more than fair amount of Captain Morgan Black with the group during a first failed attempt at interviewing the best new metal force to charge forth from Canada. I ended up getting so sloshed I don’t remember what happened and had to reschedule! It was worth it, though.

Paul talked with Metal Riot about the dedicated, hard touring acts’ latest exciting melodic death metal scorcher FIREFIGHT (Victory Records) and also touched on subjects as diverse as hockey babes, good advice, Judas Priest and the bands current killer tour with Otep, Sister Sin and Destrophy! Blackguard really distill the essence of the modern heavy metal band and deserve much support and major hails!
