Listening to “DEMON(S)” right now from DARKEST HOUR as I write this and thinking fondly of how this band has kept going and always deliver bangers passionately and reliably. Truly one of the modern underground acts that deserves more credit for carrying the torch for a long time.

Celebrating their 25th anniversary this year, metalcore pioneers DARKEST HOUR have just announced a special livestream event to benefit their favorite local venue during these unprecedented times.

To aid their good friends at the Black Cat in the band’s hometown of Washington DC, DARKEST HOUR is proud to announce a worldwide live streaming event to be held on September 26th, 2020 via VEEPS.com. All the profits of this event will go to the Black Cat Employee fund.

The band writes, “We have been spending a lot of time thinking of our family, friends, and colleagues who are all struggling to find a way through these trying times. The Black Cat has been a constant refuge for us over the years and so it feels right to our best to give back now. We need art, we need music, and we will need a place to all come together eventually to heal form all of this. We want those of our friends who work in the music/art/live events industry to know that we see you, we are here for you, and most of all that you are not alone.
We will be rolling out a special digital merchandise store, and some other surprises so follow along on our social media as we reveal more details. Happy to do our part to support the fund and give back to a community and club that has given so much to us.
Thanks so much in advance for helping get the word out. Just trying to get creative, stay active, give back, all while we try and write the best album of our lives!”
Purchase your presale ticket HERE, or feel free to donate anytime HERE.

Stay tuned for further updates on DARKEST HOUR as they continue to write their new album for release through Southern Lord in 2021.

Produced by Kurt Ballou (Converge), DARKEST HOUR‘s eleventh LP Godless Prophets & The Migrant Flora continues to solidify the band’s legacy as a major metal powerhouse. Raw, complex, melodic, yet cutting with razor blade precision, Godless Prophets & The Migrant Flora is a fierce album which shows the long-running band as lethal and ravenous as ever.

Godless Prophets & The Migrant Flora is available on CD, LP, picture disc LP, digital via Southern Lord, including a brand-new pressing on purple vinyl limited to 300 copies. Find options at the label’s webstore HERE, Bandcamp HERE, and through all digital providers.

In other news, DARKEST HOUR recently launched an official fan club via Patreon as part of their 25th anniversary. Here, fans can choose their desired tier to access lots of band content; some of it never before accessible, some of it so old it has been lost to the black hole of the Internet, and some of it totally brand new and exclusive. Check it out RIGHT HERE.

Xibalba, who I lovingly like to call the probably 2nd heaviest band in the world after maybe Crowbar, are finally giving us a fourth full length. This band is always good for some colossal ball crushing hardcore and never let me down when I need to destroy furniture and accidentally slip and fall in my room where no one can see me randomly try to do windmill kicks to them at age 41.

Arthur Rizk  did the production on new album Años En Infierno (out May 29th on Southern fucking Lord) and from the teaser it sounds bad ass. Classic death metal artist Dan Seagrave (Evocation, Memoriam, about a million more) did the cover again.

Años En Infierno Track Listing:
1. La Injusticia
2. Corredor De La Muerte
3. Santa Muerte
4. Saka
5. Años En Infierno
6. En La Oscuridad
7. El Abismo I
8. El Abismo II

Doom dealers Warhorse reared their handsome heads to make a very special appearance at the legendary Middle East in Cambridge, MA on January 16th. Hell Bent and Ritual Blade were also part of the riff ritual and we are pleased to offer you good folks some photographic evidence courtesy of Petra Dollet. Check out the gallery of this awesome night below.

RIP Elijah Nelson of Black Breath

Posted by Morgan Y Evans - Walking Bombs on Monday, December 30, 2019 at 12:36 PM (PST)

Very sad to learn of the sudden passing of Elijah Nelson of death metal band Black Breath. Was lucky enough to catch them live once and have them fully melt my face and the Elijah was a huge part of that and will be greatly missed by fans and loved ones. The group certainly are deserving of their cult following and regardless of all that it is always tragic when this sort of thing happens. Sending love out to everyone. Blasting some “Children of The Horn” right now.

Morning unearthed skull lickers. I am up early cuz my cat stepped on my face and , well, since my phone broke and I can’t scroll absentmindedly in bed I decided to do the next best thing and write absentmindedly on my laptop. I want to make you aware of a video and a lyric video from two brilliant acts you may already know and love or who might be about to rip you a new one for the first time.

Featuring ex members of Ovid’s Withering and current members of Monotheist, 7 Horns 7 Eyes, and Regurgitated Pus, Nekroí Theoí have been causing a stir. Outspoken death metal with incongruous chords and emotional complexity? Sign us up . Order Dead Gods right HERE. The band have a crushingly heavy new video about the link between the cops and racist groups. Yes, Virginia…it is a problem. Check it out below and get pissed.

Swedish crust punk/metal outfit MARTYRDÖD has issued a lyric video for “Pharmacepticon” as their seventh album, Hexhammaren, nears North America through Southern Lord. This almost feels more like a real video than a lyric vid though because it is kinda vibey and lonely. Preorders for the album are HERE.

I am always in total awe of this band’s uncanny ability to sneak the saddest melodic threads through their quite heavy riffing. It just makes it have so much more of a grab for the soul even while the rage is also smothering. One of the sickest bands in the scene record after record. “Pharmacepticon” has a more mid tempo stride and absolutely colossal guitars. This band has never let me down yet.

The band’s crushing seventh album, as with prior MARTYRDÖD works, was recorded by Fredrik Nordström at Studio Fredman (Wolfbrigade, At The Gates, Agrimonia) in Gothenburg, Sweden. MARTYRDÖD states of Hexhammaren, “The album came out really strong. We tried to just let loose and not get distracted with details. The recording was straight up raw and sincere with fast takes and improvised solos.”

BIG|BRAVE shares a video for “Sibling,” the first full single from their incoming fourth LP, A Gaze Among Them, set for release May 10th through Southern Lord. The label has posted preorders for the record alongside the new single, and the band has announced new tour dates, including US dates with the likes of Primitive Man and Dreadnought. The new “Sibling” video was created by BIG|BRAVE’s Robin Wattie and Mathieu Ball.

See BIG|BRAVE’s “Sibling” video RIGHT HERE.

A Gaze Among Them features Robin Wattie (vocals, electric guitar, guitar amp, bass amp), Mathieu Ball (electric guitar, guitar amps), and Loel Campbell (drums) with guest appearances from Thierry Amar (Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Thee Silver Mt Zion) on Contrabass and Seth Manchester’s synth overdubs. The album was recorded with Seth Manchester at Machine With Magnets in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. The beautiful image adorning the cover, created by Wattie, further demonstrates how BIG|BRAVE has blossomed. The trio sounds rejuvenated and confident, and A Gaze Among Them is the sound of a band truly honing their craft and feeling totally satisfied with it. Compelling. Necessary. Important.

A Gaze Among Them will see release May 10th via Southern Lord. Find preorders at the label webshop HERE and via Bandcamp HERE.

Mist (photo by Lara Zitko)

Sorry about the title of this article, Y’all. I wanted something spooky and am obsessed with King Diamond’s Abigail (think the black horsemen) and Sleepy Hollow was just on as well. Plus, who remembers the Nightmare horse from the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon? Anyone? Exhibit A:

#mood

Anyway, super rainy and dismal day here in Upstate, NY and I am fairly exhausted from my day jobs. If you re ordered the band names in the article title I could be a miserable pelican in the mist of today’s rainy doldrums. Been a crazy week already gearing up for the O+ festival hitting my city of Kingston this week but I am actually in pretty ok spirits. Need to put on some more coffee and get to blogging. I got some weird European Maple coffee from Aldi’s cuz they are way cheaper but still pretty good quality stuff than most more mainstream shitty American grocery stores.

First off, thanks to all the readers and metalheads who tweeted support to Twitter after my personal account was suspended! It is such BS and as of now I still don’t have it back. Pretty absurd since the last thing I tweeted was me kissing my mom on the head who has dementia and not anything remotely hateful.

My personal Twitter @morganyevans was suspended either from my band name Walking Bombs alarming their violence rule (even though it is about depression not terrorism) or me tweeting at Best Coast that my girlfriend Elizabeth (aka Globelamp) “alleges” she was punched in the face by the singer of Foxygen and that I wished Best Coast and her just could talk and ease tensions between them because my gf Globelamp is mad she was blocked by Bethany when she feels she tried to ask her for help getting awareness of what happened to her.

So when Globelamp hears Best Coast tweeting to believe survivors during the Kavanaugh trial or other people who she tried to reach out to about her story in the industry who ignored her about being hit she triggers hard. It makes me very sad and I wish they could squash it somehow. That’s not meant as a personal attack on the sincerity of anyone on my end. I think it would be healing and helpful for them both if they could ease tensions between them.

Globelamp also thought Best Coast also seemingly likes Kim Kardashian, who my gf super despises for lying about and trying to bring down her idol Taylor Swift (who Best Coast doesn’t seem to like anymore) as well as enabling Kanye horribly and selling pro anorexic weight loss lollipops to girls. I guess Best Coast spoke out about the pro anorexia stuff? That’s good. I am not against plastic surgery or body modification but there is a manipulative and cold capitalistic ego driven horror show to the Kimye and general Kardashian family trainwreck that needs to be stopped. And don’t get me started on the Jenner’s exploiting black lives matter in that Pepsi commercial. Globelamp also thinks that Taylor didn’t talk about the Nazi stuff because she is obviously pro LGBTQ and diversity and didn’t want to platform Nazis all over the tabloids and thinks Best Coast tried to bring her down, which made her mad at Bethany awhile ago.

Anyway, there’s a difference between, say, having body dysmorphia and mass marketing patriarchal beauty standards. Nothing against femmes but Kim to me seems different and motivated by very cold brand of capitalism. More interested in any clicks like Kanye than if they are harming society or not and distracting from real work that needs to be done. Here I am talking about them but it is because they have become a huge problem. The fact is Kim participated in a lot of gaslighting on a national level then still plays dumb when she wants democratic accolades for optics. And you can’t blame a woman for her shitty partner’s antics but she and Kanye are working together on most of it like the Taylor snapchat splice job frame. Swift never agreed to let a man call her bitch or claim agency for her career and had already outsold Ye many times over before he jumped on stage with her at fan voted VMAS when she was 19 and he was 30 something. That matters and is super sexist. Kimye are basically chaos agents. Swift is a huge altruist.

It seemed suspicious to me Kim did the photo op with Trump for clemency for one person (instead of pushing him to stop prison for profit and Maga policies that super hurt minorities- Watch 13th) right when Ye needed good press by association when his worst album yet Ye dropped and everyone was saying he abandoned mom’s charity and exploited Whitney Houston’s addiction with Pusha. Hard to say you care about addicts when you have elsewhere said you were inspired by Pablo’s ability to move product, fam.

So yeah, Twitter then told me the other day I was suspended for being primarily used to promote hate even though almost all I tweet is support for non binary people like myself, dementia awareness for my mom, Metal news, anti-MAGA stuff for women’s and minority rights. So I don’t know if reclaiming the phrase “walking bomb” from people who called me that as an insult or using the word “punch” or tweeting to the GOP to not take away abortion rights or complaining about Kanye and Kim on Twitter did it but something made Twitter think I am as bad as Alex Jones.

This is what happens when gaslighting is the new national past-time and we pretend false equivalencies are real and morons need to be coddled. That is not punk rock. Eff that. Kanye wants to pretend he is saying to “love” everyone but really like Trump he is just putting the foot on the gas(lighting). It is like the ‘debate me’ incels and MRAs and libertarian or Gamergate types and trolls or Nazi black metal apologists who are perpetuating the sewer water culture that Milo or Jordan Peterson or Kanye and friends are so eager to splash in like it is the fountain of youth. “Nothing matters, weee! Who cares who is harmed!”

When we fall in the pit we pick one another up (ideally). We can’t always pick up those fallen to hate in metal/punk or music, sadly. Sometimes it’s too much unhealthy emotional labor and bad faith actors or people are so brainwashed and think they aren’t doing harm when they really, really are. We CAN hold fast to principles so MAYBE people can see the light. PMA/hold fast.\m/

So enter a half waking collision of my strung together Social Justice and Swiftie thoughts such as ,“It’s absurd Kanye equates being critiqued for wearing a Maga hat on SNL and ranting gibberish with being bullied. The kkk support Maga. Asking people to be considerate and not boost a hate message is not bullying” and “I can’t wait to see Taylor Swift to sing ‘I Did Something Bad’ on the AMAs and sing ‘if a man talks shit then I owe him nothing’ and for the ratings to soar and make the VMA flop look like morons.”

But I digress…Onward to some music news more befitting of this site’s gloomy genres.

Slovenian doom metal band Mist have announced some shows in Austria and Denmark. First they will support Canadian heavy metal masters Cauldron this Friday in Linz and for December they have confirmed shows in Graz, Klagenfurt and Vienna. By the end of October they will also play their first show ever in Denmark. I had never heard this traditional doom band today and was impressed with a lot of the material on their recent full length Free Me Of The Sun. They kind of remind me of my friend Pam’s old band Grande mixed with The Skull or something. While the kind of choppy and rudimentary guitar leads in the solo sections are the weakest element, the doomy portions, songwriting and extra powerful melodic vocals from Nina Spruk totally slay. Hope to hear a lot more from this group!

Mist Live dates:
05.10. KAPU, Linz (Austria) w/ Cauldron (CAN), Eisenhand (AT)
20.10. Train, Aarhus (Denmark) w/ Corpsessed (FIN), Balmog (E), Woebegone Obscured (DK), Beneath The Silence (DK)
06.12. Orto Bar, Ljubljana (Slovenia) w/ Deep Down Bellow (SLO), Mutism (SLO)
14.12. Music-House, Graz (Austria) w/ Dark Nativity (AT), Deumus (AT)
15.12. Kwadrat, Klagenfurt (Austria) w/ Vu Garde (AT), Dusk (AT), The Stolen Goose Project (AT)
16.12. Weberknecht, Vienna (Austria)

King Woman took our album of the year honor of 2017 (which we still stand by 100 fucking percent) for Created In The Image of Suffering but as it turns out front person Kristina Esfandiari can’t stop making relevant art. Her other band Miserable (we stan) have a new record out collecting two EPS called Loverboy via my faves Sargent House on October 26th. Seriously, thank God for that label. Anyway, after the first version of this record caught fire on a hard drive Esfandiari nonetheless got it done anyway anew and today has premiered the title track at Bust Magazine HERE.

An excerpt:  ‘I wrote “Loverboy” as a healing anthem for myself & hopefully other womxn who have experienced confusion or a sense of inadequacy due to gaslighting and objectification. I don’t exist for someone else’s pleasure or entertainment and that’s essentially what I’m singing in “Loverboy.” So many of us are made to feel less than human. The Loverboy album as a whole is meant to be reflective on past experiences when I feel I muted my voice.’

Miserable — On Tour:
October 20 Los Angeles, CA @ Resident
December 12 Los Angeles, CA @ Union *
December 13 San Diego, CA @ Che Café ** w/ THOU

Lastly, Pelican seem to have entered Steve Albini’s studio! I don’t know what they are planning as far as new album news but I super love that band and CANNOT WAIT! Assume it is probably for Southern Lord?

Until we all meet again, hang in there, lovebirds.

Hello friends.
Lot to be stoked about for 2018 already from new Clutch album being started to Watain to American Nightmare returning to Judas Priest and new stuff from Agrimonia. I have been dealing with psycho land lord bullshit and my parent’s house facing foreclosure as well as helping Globelamp make her witchy new emo folk album Romantic Cancer (out in early 2018, deets announced soon). It has been an interesting ‘press break’ after the holidays, but we are indeed back. Anyway, throwing up a press release today as am pressed for time but want to get you all stoked on a sick pairing of the APMD homies and fucking Baptists! Killer energy to start the year with charged up and on fire! Let’s do this.
Press Release:

In support of their monstrous 2017-released Hostage Animal, ALL PIGS MUST DIE has announced a string of West Coast shows in support of the album. These shows follow the band’s East Coast record release mini-tour which closed out the year, and mark their anticipated return to the West Coast in five years. With Vancouver-based labelmates Baptists on the lineup as well, this will be a tour not to miss. Tickets go on sale Monday, January 8th at 10am in each respective market; see the full routing below.

ALL PIGS MUST DIE, now a five-piece with the addition of Brian Izzi (Trap Them) on guitar, is comprised of some of the most well-seasoned musicians on the eastern seaboard – Kevin Baker (The Hope Conspiracy), Ben Koller (Converge), Matt Woods, and Adam Wentworth (both of Bloodhorse).Hostage Animal is their most dynamic collection of work thus far and is an aural representation of the band as a whole; concise, intense, aggressive, and carrying a bleak world view. Available now from Southern Lord, Hostage Animal showcases that ALL PIGS MUST DIE is far more than the sum of their parts, and their fusion of crust punk, hardcore, and metal is more ferocious than ever before.

Check out why we recommend this handful for you to purchase before November’s coming fire BELOW.
