Album Review: Fossils – Flesh Hammer

FOSSILS - Flesh Hammer_Cover

The “filet horizon” is drawing near. This fuzz, punk-metal hybrid Fossils hack out is in the tradition of rhythm tackling yet far seeing minimalists like Battles, Godheadsilo, Black Cobra, Tempel, Dysrythmia, Shellac or my friends in stoner/noise duo Dead Unicorn. This here  is well written yet chaotic buzzing and distorted bass and drum instrumental attacks bouncing off your skull in a jackhammer whir of snare hits and tom rolls, screeching noise and sped up Tool riffs. Insane cymbal work and especially addictive kick drum patterns. fans of a more simplistic Lightning Bolt or DFA 1979 (who put out a sweet Christmas Sweater last holiday season) should also jock this shit.

Most of the songs like “Carnivore Arrest” and “Pelvis Crust” or the greatly titled “Lard Obstacle” sound fairly the same, an insane buzz of whip cracking dry kit and energetically assaulted riff worship. The thing is, the whole record is addictive as fine cherry pie. It is a barrage of pure riff that could exist well in several decades (and it is hard to imagine it ever sounding past time for a racket like this). Perfect to blast loud, zone out to, drive fast or get busy in a kitchen full of “Crackhorse” “Cat Stalker” “Flesh Pillar” “Spamtastic” left overs.
